BREAKING NEWS Bass guitarist for iconic punk band Comeback Kid dies after short health battle
Keil, 39, from Minnesota, played with the Canadian punk band from 2008 to 2004 and was featured on two of their albums, 'Symptoms + Cures' and 'Die Knowing.'
The father-of-two was diagnosed with the devastating neurological disorder on May 2, 2024.
ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, impacts the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. It is a fatal disease with no known cure.
Comeback Kid posted a heartfelt tribute to the former bassist on social media, confirming he passed away on Sunday.
'It's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our longtime friend and previous bass player Matt Keil,' the band said.
'He was such an amazing friend and musician. Just the greatest guy to tour with, be around, and explore the new countries in the world with.
'We are sending our love to his wife Maddie and his two daughters and want to honor his memory for our all years to come. We love you Matt K.'
About half of ALS patients have a life expectancy of three years after the initial onset of symptoms, though some can survive for decades.
The rare and incurable degenerative condition impairs the nervous system over time and causes the muscles to increasingly suffer from paralysis.
After his diagnosis, Keil's loved ones launched a GoFundMe to support his wife Maddie and their two daughters, Ellie, 9, and Zoey, 7.
'You may know Matt Keil as a loving husband of 12 years to Maddie, or as a dedicated father,' the fundraiser said.
'You may also know him as a successful realtor, impassioned musician, and member of the Twin Cities community. However Matt has been a part of your life, you know that he is one of the kindest, most generous, hilarious, and genuine people.
'Matt would love nothing more than to live the rest of his years spending time with his family, traveling to the lake in Wisconsin, golfing, making music with friends, cheering on his daughters at soccer and gymnastics, or watching silly movies with the love of his life.'
His wife released a heartbreaking tribute reflecting on their marriage after his passing.
'It is with a shattered heart that I share that the love of my life and my very best friend passed away yesterday afternoon after a 19-month-long battle with ALS,' she said.
'We shared a harmonious marriage filled with laughter and joy. He was an amazing parent, my own personal comedian, and the very best partner. I will miss you for the rest of my life. I love you forever.'

CBS News names '60 Minutes' veteran Tanya Simon as broadcast's new top producer
CBS News said Thursday it has selected Tanya Simon as the top producer at '60 Minutes,' elevating a respected insider in a closely-watched appointment given the turmoil that enveloped the newsmagazine with the settlement of President Donald Trump 's lawsuit. Simon, daughter of the late '60 Minutes' correspondent Bob Simon, becomes only the fourth executive producer of the influential newsmagazine since it was invented by Don Hewitt in the late 1960s. She's been executive editor of the broadcast, and running it on an interim basis since her predecessor Bill Owens quit in April, saying he questioned whether he'd be allowed to lead the program as he saw fit. Owens had opposed settling Trump's lawsuit over the editing of last fall's interview with Kamala Harris. CBS News parent company Paramount Global agreed earlier this month to pay Trump $16 million to end their dispute. Simon has worked at '60 Minutes' for 25 years, and was strongly supported by many at the famously insular broadcast to take over for Owens. 'Tanya Simon understands what makes '60 Minutes' tick,' said Tom Cibrowski, president and executive editor of CBS News. 'She is an innovative leader, an exceptional producer, and someone who knows how to inspire people.' In May, seven '60 Minutes' correspondents signed a letter to Paramount Global management urging that Simon be appointed. 'As much as we will miss Bill Owens, we believe — no, we know — that his long-term successor must come from within,' the correspondents wrote. Crucially, Simon's appointment came before the Trump administration's approval of Paramount Global's proposed merger with Skydance Media, a takeover that is expected to result in changes at CBS News. ___ David Bauder writes about the intersection of media and entertainment for the AP. Golden Earring co-founder George Kooymans dies aged 77
Kooymans' family and the surviving members of Golden Earring announced that he had died on Wednesday from complications of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), which he had been diagnosed with in 2020. He retired from the band soon after. Kooymans, from The Hague, was in his mid-teens when he helped found what became Golden Earring in the early 1960s: The band's name was inspired by an instrumental of the time, Golden Earrings. He was also a core member of the group's best known line-up, which featured drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk, singer-guitarist Barry Hay and bassist-keyboardist Rinus Gerritsen and they stayed together from 1970 until Kooymans' departure. 'George bore this devastating and debilitating illness with exceptional strength and dignity,' a statement from Golden Earring reads in part. 'We bid farewell to a great musician and composer, whose work extended beyond Golden Earring. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, but above all, a friend.' With more than 20 top 10 singles in their native country, Golden Earring had more success at home than overseas. But they began to attract an underground following in the US in the late 1960s and broke through commercially in 1973 with the worldwide hit Radar Love, which has been covered by U2, R.E.M. and many others and used on the soundtrack to Baby Driver, Wayne's World 2 and other films. Radar Love, with its stately opening riff and memorable opening line 'I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel', was once ranked by Rolling Stone as among the greatest road trip songs. Golden Earring shared bills with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin among others and toured with such stars as Aerosmith, Rush and the Doobie Brothers. In 1982, Twilight Zone became their biggest US song with the help of a video on the recently launched MTV, while other popular tracks included When The Lady Smiles and Going To The Run. Golden Earring continued to tour and record in the 1990s and beyond. For its 50th anniversary, in 2011, the band was honoured with a commemorative stamp from the Dutch postal service that through an app could be linked to Radar Love. A farewell performance, without Kooymans, had already been scheduled for early next year.

Sydney Sweeney just sent this American stock soaring
A US clothing brand has seen its share price surge in a 'memestock' frenzy after announcing an advertising campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. Clothing brand American Eagle Outfitters saw its stock jump as much as 12pc in New York after it announced that the Euphoria and The White Lotus actress would star in a new advertising push. The surge added nearly $228m (£168m) to its market value. Ms Sweeney will appear in a campaign for its winter denim collection that includes a limited-edition jacket as well as 'The Sydney Jean'. While advertising campaigns can and do influence a company's performance and Ms Sweeney is one of the most recognisable actresses in the US, analysts said the scale of the share price jump was untethered from reality. The sharp upswing comes after the retailer gained attention on Reddit's WallStreetBets, a forum known for fuelling so-called extreme rallies in the share prices of so-called memestocks. Memestocks are companies where the share price is driven by social media hype and online communities, rather than the company's fundamental financial performance. The phenomenon emerged during the pandemic as people turned to trading as a way to entertain themselves during lockdowns. 'Gamblification' of stock markets The term memestock was coined after companies including GameStop and Blackberry saw their share prices surge in 2021 despite little in the way of updates about their underlying performance. The vertiginous rally triggered the collapse of a hedge fund that had bet against GameStop's stock and helped inspire the 2023 film Dumb Money starring Paul Dano. American Eagle's stock was down almost 50pc so far this year prior to this week's rally after it pulled its annual forecasts because of tariff uncertainty. The company primarily sources its products from China. Ross Mayfield, an analyst at Baird Private Wealth Management, said memestocks were a symbol of how stock markets had been 'gamblified'. He said: 'It says to me nothing about the level of interest rates or financial conditions. This is retail traders moving individual stocks that are heavily shorted. 'It reflects more the gambling culture permeating financial markets. These are not being bid up because of a good earnings report. It's because of a Sydney Sweeney ad campaign.' Ms Sweeney, who has 25.2m followers on Instagram, has fronted campaigns for the likes of Ford, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and luxury fashion brand Miu Miu. As well as being known for her screen roles, Ms Sweeney has become a prominent figure in popular culture and found herself wrapped up in North American culture wars. After her appearance hosting Saturday Night Live, in which she appeared in a sketch as a Hooters waitress, Canadian newspaper the National Post that declared the actress's breasts were the 'double-D harbingers of the death of woke', a claim that sparked a wave of commentary on both sides of the political spectrum centring on her physical appearance. Meanwhile, Ms Sweeney was criticised by commentators on the Left in 2023 after she attended a birthday party for her mother where guests were pictured wearing Maga-style caps.
