Tiff over cigarettes leads to the killing of a techie in Bengaluru
A late-night argument over cigarettes turned fatal in South Bengaluru when a man allegedly ran his car over two software engineers, killing one and injuring the other.
The police said the incident occurred around 4.10 am on May 10 near Konanakunte Cross.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjay H N, 29, while his injured friend is Chetan Pujamath, 30.
Both worked remotely for different software companies.
According to the police, Sanjay and Pujamath had stepped out for a late dinner after working from home.
They stopped at a roadside tea stall on their Yamaha R15 motorcycle.
Shortly after, the accused, Pratheek H, 32, a sales manager at a Maida factory on Magadi Road, arrived at the same stall in a Hyundai Creta with his wife, returning from a birthday party.
Pratheek reportedly asked Pujamath to fetch him cigarettes. When Pujamath refused, an argument broke out.
Pratheek stepped out of the car and began abusing Pujamath.
Sanjay intervened and pushed him away, attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Pratheek's wife then pulled him back into the car, but he allegedly continued threatening the duo, saying he 'wouldn't let them go'.
Moments later, as Sanjay rode off with Pujamath on the pillion, they attempted a U-turn on Kanakapura Main Road.
Pratheek allegedly accelerated and rammed into their bike.
Pujamath landed on the car's bonnet and suffered minor injuries, while Sanjay was flung into the air and landed on the footpath with severe head injuries.
Pratheek fled the scene, but Pujamath managed to rush Sanjay to a hospital. Sanjay succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Lokesh B Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), confirmed that the case has been upgraded from attempted murder to murder.
Pratheek has been arrested and produced before a court.

He told the vendor that a demand of Rs 20 would be reasonable as it was late. However, Sanjay turned aggressive, stating he charged the same amount every night and told Kumaraswamy to leave if he wasn't willing to pay. Soon the argument heated up and Kumaraswamy questioned whether Sanjay has a licence to sell cigarettes at night. Angered by his question, Sanjay assaulted Kumaraswamy. When Kumaraswamy attempted to retaliate, Sanjay grabbed his helmet and struck him multiple times causing serious injury near his eye. Profusely bleeding, Kumaraswamy was rushed to KC General hospital by his friends. The following day, Kumaraswamy filed a complaint. Basaveshwaranagar police arrested Sanjay and released him on station bail. An officer confirmed that Sanjay had expressed his intention to file a counter-complaint, but since he had assaulted Kumaraswamy and was operating without due permission at night, police warned him against repeating such behaviour.

Two young techie employees, identified as Bhatula Bhargav Yadav and Chethi Varshith, died in a car crash in Hyderabad's Edulabad in early hours of Sunday after returning from a party that concluded at a farmhouse. The tragedy took when they were searching for food and couldn't find any open eateries, TOI reported. Both victims, aged 23, were drunk and negligent driving caused the incident, the preliminary investigation showed. Yadav belonged to Kuntloor, whereas Varshith from Sainikpuri. Both were joined by other software engineers, namely Praveen, Dinesh, Vinay, Bhavadeep, and Rajesh, at Vihari Nature's Nest farmhouse on Friday for a celebratory evening. 'They reached the farmhouse in two cars, one driven by Praveen and another by a hired driver. The group partied until about 2.30 am on Saturday," TOI quoted Sub-inspector A Shekhar as saying. While they were on their way back, the Hyundai Creta driven by Praveen suddenly swerved off the road, crashing into two electric poles and a tree. 'The impact was so severe that the right passenger door flung open. Bhargav and Varshith, who were seated in the rear, were thrown out of the vehicle and died on the spot due to multiple injuries,' A Shekhar mentioned. Their families were notified around 3 am, after the group members in the second vehicle alerted the police. Inspector P Parashuram said, 'Initial probe points to rash and negligent driving. We have collected Praveen's blood sample for blood alcohol content analysis. Viscera samples of the deceased will also be tested for alcohol." The SI added despite the deployment of airbags, the impact of the crash was extremely severe, stating, "Liquor bottles were recovered from the farmhouse, and CCTV footage has been collected as part of the probe. We will also be recording statements from the other group members.' Following a complaint by Bhargav's uncle, B. Nagesh Yadav, a case has been filed against Praveen under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence. In a separate incident, a 24-year-old law student lost his life in Haryana's Nuh after his car crashed into a stationary truck from behind on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway early Saturday morning. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera. According to the police, the driver of the car, identified as Rahul, a third-year LLB student, apparently dozed off at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into the stationary truck.

Hyderabad: What was meant to be a weekend getaway among colleagues turned into a devastating tragedy when two young employees of a major corporate company lost their lives in a car crash at Edulabad, near here, in the early hours of Sunday. Preliminary investigation suggests drunk and negligent driving as the cause , casting a pall of grief over what began as a night of celebration. The deceased have been identified as Bathula Bhargav Yadav, 23, a resident of Kuntloor, and Chethi Varshith, 23, from Sainikpuri. According to Ghatkesar inspector P Parashuram, the victims were among a group of seven employees who had gone to Vihari Nature's Nest farmhouse at around 2.30 pm on Friday. The group included Dinesh, Vinay, Bhavadeep, Rajesh, and Praveen, in addition to the deceased. "They reached the farmhouse in two cars—one driven by Praveen, a team lead in the software company, and another by a hired driver. The group partied until about 2.30 am on Saturday," said Ghatkesar sub-inspector A Shekhar. Around that time, the group left the farmhouse to look for food, driving around Edulabad but failing to find any open eateries. The accident occurred during their return to the farmhouse from Edulabad. "The impact was so severe that the right passenger door flung open. Based on a complaint filed by Bhargav's uncle, B Nagesh Yadav, a case has been registered against Praveen under section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. "Initial probe points to rash and negligent driving. We have collected Praveen's blood sample for blood alcohol content analysis. Viscera samples of the deceased will also be tested for alcohol," inspector Parashuram said. Liquor bottles were recovered from the farmhouse, and CCTV footage has been collected as part of probe. "Although airbags were deployed, the force of the collision was immense. We will also be recording statements from the other group members," the SI added.
