Tiff over cigarettes leads to the killing of a techie in Bengaluru
The police said the incident occurred around 4.10 am on May 10 near Konanakunte Cross.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjay H N, 29, while his injured friend is Chetan Pujamath, 30.
Both worked remotely for different software companies.
According to the police, Sanjay and Pujamath had stepped out for a late dinner after working from home.
They stopped at a roadside tea stall on their Yamaha R15 motorcycle.
Shortly after, the accused, Pratheek H, 32, a sales manager at a Maida factory on Magadi Road, arrived at the same stall in a Hyundai Creta with his wife, returning from a birthday party.
Pratheek reportedly asked Pujamath to fetch him cigarettes. When Pujamath refused, an argument broke out.
Pratheek stepped out of the car and began abusing Pujamath.
Sanjay intervened and pushed him away, attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Pratheek's wife then pulled him back into the car, but he allegedly continued threatening the duo, saying he 'wouldn't let them go'.
Moments later, as Sanjay rode off with Pujamath on the pillion, they attempted a U-turn on Kanakapura Main Road.
Pratheek allegedly accelerated and rammed into their bike.
Pujamath landed on the car's bonnet and suffered minor injuries, while Sanjay was flung into the air and landed on the footpath with severe head injuries.
Pratheek fled the scene, but Pujamath managed to rush Sanjay to a hospital. Sanjay succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Lokesh B Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), confirmed that the case has been upgraded from attempted murder to murder.
Pratheek has been arrested and produced before a court.

The murder of a 19-year-old playschool teacher in Bhiwani's Singhani village has caused public outrage in the area with protests entering its third day on Saturday and shopkeepers observing shutdown against alleged police inaction. He also demanded a different board of doctors to conduct a fresh and thorough postmortem, alleging that: 'There were multiple lapses in the postmortem examination.' The family alleges that the post-mortem report doesn't 'conclusively' indicate the murder. In response to the ongoing protest, the Haryana government, on Friday, transferred Bhiwani SP Manbir Singh and suspended Loharu police station in-charge Ashok, Assistant Sub-Inspector Shakuntala, Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) team ASI Anoop, constable Pawan, and Special Police Officer (SPO) Dharmendra. The government posted Sumit Kumar as Bhiwani SP, who will supervise the investigation now. Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Saturday: 'All the accused should be arrested at the earliest and justice must be ensured for the victim's family. We demand the strictest possible punishment for the culprits so that no criminal dares to even think of committing such an act in the future.' In Bahadurgarh, Hooda told the media: 'Law and order has completely collapsed across Haryana. Traders are receiving threats on a daily basis. Businessmen, employees, politicians, common people, and even the police no longer feel safe. It seems like there is no government in the state, and criminals have taken control of the entire system… This crime has exposed not just the brutality of the culprits, but also the failure of the law and order system… If the police had acted in time, her life could have been saved.' According to Manisha's family, on August 11, she left home to go to a nursing college in Singhani to enquire about her admission. As she failed to return by evening, her father informed the police via Dial-112 (Haryana police emergency response support system). According to Manisha's family, police accompanied them to the college to inquire, where they questioned three drunk men. The men denied seeing Manisha and said the college had closed at 1 pm. On August 13, a farmer found a young woman's body in a field near a canal in Singhani. Police, who reached the spot after being informed, identified the deceased as Manisha. Man killed in hit-and-run while fleeing police on stolen scooter
Chandigarh: A 30-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident while riding a stolen scooter on the dividing road of Sector 56, Chandigarh, late on August 14. The victim, who remains unidentified, was reportedly trying to evade a police check post when the incident occurred. Around 12:45am, a police team from Sector 39 had set up a naka on the dividing road between Sector 56 and Sector 122 (Mohali) as part of Independence Day security checks. Officers noticed a man approaching on an Activa scooter. He abruptly took a U-turn and began riding on the wrong side of the road to avoid the checkpoint. Moments later, officers heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene, where they found the scooter rider lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH-16), where he succumbed to injuries during treatment. Investigations revealed that the scooter was registered in Punjab and had been reported stolen. A driving licence found in the victim's pocket belonged to another individual, who confirmed he had lost it months ago. 2 die as bikes collide, cops say one of them was making stunt reel
Ghaziabad: Two men died and another was injured after their motorcycles collided head-on on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in Tronica City on Thursday night around 8pm. According to police, one rider was filming a stunt reel at the time of the accident. A 13-second crash video has also gone viral. The deceased were identified as Rohit Sharma (31) of Delhi and Subodh Kumar (42) of Baghpat; the injured is Sanjay Sharma (38) of Baghpat. A head-on collision between two motorcycles was captured in a 13-second video received by TOI from the police. The footage shows Rohit performing dangerous stunts on his Yamaha R1-5, standing on the bike while holding the handlebars as another person films him.
