Fantasy Baseball Impact: Red Sox finally call up top prospect Roman Anthony

On Saturday night, Roman Anthony smacked the home run heard round the world. On Monday afternoon, Anthony received the call we've all been waiting for. It's finally official — ballyhooed outfield prospect Roman Anthony is joining the Boston Red Sox, expected in time for Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He'll be batting fifth in his debut. The Red Sox are facing a critical part of the schedule, with the Rays (three games) and Yankees (three games) heading to Fenway Park this week. Boston currently sits fourth in the A.L. East division, three games under .500 and 8.5 games behind New York. Advertisement Anthony, who turned 21 in May, entered the regular season ranked first or second on the main scouting clipboards — he's widely considered the best hitting prospect in baseball. He was toying with Triple-A pitching this year, slashing .288/.423/.491 with 10 homers. The plate discipline belies someone so young; he has more walks than strikeouts. Anthony only has three steals this year, on the heels of 21 in the previous season; perhaps that was tied to an earlier shoulder issue. His hard-hit metrics are all in the red, the good side. Anthony is the third noted Boston prospect to join the team this year. Infielder Kristian Campbell made the club out of spring training, and INF Marcelo Mayer was recalled two weeks ago. The cadence of the promotions speaks to the current shape of the Boston roster — the Red Sox have battled injuries and underperformance in the infield, while the outfield has been strong. Corner outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran are both above-average hitters in 2025, and while Ceddanne Rafaela is below code with the bat, he's a plus-plus defender in center. Even journeyman Rob Refsnyder has been capable as a platoon bat against left-handed pitching. So, it remains to be seen how manager Alex Cora will divvy up the outfield at-bats. Advertisement But you don't tap Anthony on the shoulder if you intend to sit him on the bench. While Anthony is expected to be a future star by everyone who analyzes the game, you never know how young players will respond to their first MLB action (Campbell has cooled after a quick start — though he had four hits and a homer over the weekend — while Mayer has a modest .643 OPS). But fantasy managers obviously can't ignore the plausible upside here. Despite being less than a month from his 21st birthday, it's possible Anthony makes a splash in his first lap around The Show. Anthony is rostered in 46% of Yahoo leagues as we go to press. That number is going to spike quickly. It's last call, gamers. Fenway Park should have some extra electricity this week.

Red Sox calling up Roman Anthony, MLB's top prospect

The Boston Red Sox are calling up top prospect Roman Anthony two days after the 21-year-old outfielder hit a 497-foot grand slam for Triple-A Worcester. Anthony, considered one of Boston's "Big Three" prospects before the regular season along with rookies Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer, will make his major league debut Monday night at home against Tampa Bay, batting fifth and playing right field, manager Alex Cora said. Wilyer Abreu was placed on the IL as the corresponding move, per multiple reports. A second-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft – one the Red Sox paid more like a first-round pick with a $2.5 million signing bonus – Anthony is batting .288 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games this season. While there are some concerns about his short-term performance, as he's been a bit overly passive at times in Triple-A, the long-term prospects for Anthony are still promising: he's the consensus top prospect in the league for a reason, with the likes of Baseball America, and Baseball Prospectus all listing him No. 1 at the time of his promotion, with the expectation being that this is a future All-Star outfielder in the making. [Related: This month will determine the direction of the Red Sox] The second grand slam of the season for Anthony put Worchester ahead 9-4 in the eighth inning. He drove a 91.1 mph sinker from Carlos Romero deep over the right-center field wall, a drive that left his bat at 115.6 mph. Anthony hit the longest home run measured this year by Statcast, which this season tracks the major leagues, Triple-A and the Class A Florida State League. Since Statcast started tracking in the major leagues in 2015, only Nomar Mazara (505 feet in 2019), Giancarlo Stanton (504 feet in 2016), C.J. Cron (504 feet in 2022) and Christian Yelich (499 feet in 2022) have hit longer big league homers. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Red Sox called up top prospect Roman Anthony just days after 497-foot grand slam

Red Sox called up top prospect Roman Anthony just days after 497-foot grand slam The Red Sox went into the season knowing that top prospect Roman Anthony would join them in Boston at some point in 2025. But leave it to the 21-year-old to draw that call-up with the most emphatic of home runs. The Red Sox made it official on Monday, calling up Anthony from Triple-A Worcester. And he'll join the team for the series opener against the Rays at Fenway Park. With the Red Sox dropping in the AL East standings, fans had been clamoring for Anthony's call. So, it was really a matter of when — not if — for Anthony's call. Yet, one swing on Saturday gave Boston no choice. In Worcester's game against the Rochester Red Wings, Anthony obliterated a 91 mph fastball for a 497-foot grand slam. Just wow. That was the kind of swing that had an entire front office thinking, "Yeah, he's ready." This was also the scene of him leaving the WooSox facility shortly after the call-up. In 58 games with Worcester, Anthony hit .288 with 10 home runs and a .913 OPS. He'll immediately add power to a lineup that already ranked near the top of the league in home runs.
