Digha Jagannath temple to open today, CM Mamata Banerjee says: ‘All our guests'
ARRANGEMENTS WERE made for the 'Maha Yajna' on Tuesday evening at the newly built Jagannath temple in the seaside tourist town of Digha in Purba Medinipur, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took part in the rituals a day before its inauguration. Banerjee emphasised that 'everyone is our guest.'
The Jagannath temple, a replica of the 12th-century shrine in Puri, Odisha, will be inaugurated on Wednesday on the auspicious occasion of 'Akshaya Trithiya'. Digha is around 350 km from Puri.
The massive event, drawing parallels to the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya last year, has been interpreted by some as a significant effort by Chief Minister Banerjee to solidify her image as a leader who embraces all communities, addressing previous allegations of minority appeasement.
Digha has got a makeover as it turned into the host of a grand religious event. Roads have been closed to vehicular traffic and replaced by meticulously laid blue carpets. Giant screens, posters and creative depictions of Lord Jagannath adorned almost every corner of the town on Tuesday.
The air resonated with chants of 'Jai Jagannath' played on loudspeakers and the streets were illuminated by dazzling lights and embellished with flower decorations. Shelters and drinking water arrangements catered to the large number of people — including VIPs, dignitaries and local residents — who thronged the area.
On Tuesday afternoon, Banerjee participated in a Mahayagna at the temple. She performed the aarti and the Purnahuti ceremony commenced at 4:15 pm. The CM was accompanied by Rajesh Dwaitapati, a Puri Jagannath temple serviceman, and Radharman Das, vice president of ISKCON, Bengal.
Following the Purnahuti, the CM addressed the crowd, emphasizing inclusivity and spiritual connection. 'People of all religions and castes have come here. Everyone is our guest. Religion is never preached verbally. Religion is something that touches the heart…I am praying for everyone,' she said.

Bhubaneswar: Govt on Friday launched an official mobile application titled 'Shree Jagannatha Dham' for the Jagannath Temple, a move that comes amid the ongoing debate over the Digha shrine's nomenclature. "The application provides information about ritual schedules, queue waiting duration, Rath Yatra preparations and other special events. Additional functionalities are being developed and will be added in future updates," Puri district collector Siddharth Shankar Swain told TOI. He explained that selecting 'Jagannath Dham' as the application's name reflects the sentiments of Jagannath devotees, who consider Puri as the original 'Jagannath dham' among the 'char dhams' in India. "The application's name was chosen because Puri represents the genuine Jagannath dham," Swain said. A controversy had erupted on April 30 when West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had designated the newly-constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha as 'Jagannath Dham', drawing sharp criticism from various quarters, particularly from Odisha. Regarding the timing of the launch, he highlighted the upcoming Rath Yatra celebration on June 27. According to the district collector, the application will continue to operate beyond Rath Yatra festival, with additional features planned specifically for the event. Users can locate public facilities, temples and navigate different routes to their desired destinations. "During other times, the application will serve as a tourist guide in Puri, providing information about daily ritual timings, darshan schedules, Mahaprasad availability, and donation procedures at the shrine. Users can also find nearby religious sites, accommodation options and other facilities through the application. We will include a grievance redressal feature soon," Swain said. Min takes stock of Rath Yatra preparations in Dhurwa
Ranchi: With just weeks to go before the annual Rath Yatra, rural development minister Deepika Pandey Singh on Friday visited the Jagannath temple in Dhurwa to offer prayers and take stock of the ongoing preparations for the upcoming festival. The Rath Mela, scheduled for June 27, draws thousands of devotees every year. The temple management has begun preparing for the annual event. Oraon, a former IPS, recalling his long association with the event, said, "I first participated in the Rath Yatra in 1974 when I was a young officer. They suggested that instead of tendering stalls or allocating them through contractors, the administration should explore alternative methods that keep participation affordable and inclusive. For many families, it is an important seasonal source of income. Dhurwa resident Anil Yadav said, "The festival changes the whole atmosphere here. Even those who don't visit temples regularly come during Rath Yatra. Dhurwa feels different and more alive."

Mamata to visit Delhi next Monday, may meet PM Modi
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit New Delhi on June 9 and may meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is likely to return on June 11. Sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, said that the CM's Office has sought an appointment from the PMO for a meeting on June 10. 'The chief minister wants to raise the issue of the Centre's pending funds and dues to the West Bengal government, which has now ballooned to over Rs 2 lakh 27 thousand crore,' an official said. The TMC government in the state has been raising the issue of pending Central funds for schemes like MGNREGA (rural job guarantee scheme) and PM Awas Yojana (housing scheme for the poor), and has even knocked the doors of the Supreme Court. The BJP government at the Centre has justified the blocking of the funds, citing alleged corruption in the implementation of the schemes in the state. Last week, Banerjee had skipped the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in Delhi that was chaired by the PM. Sources close to Mamata said she decided not to attend the previous meeting because the NDA-led states were allotted more than 15 minutes to speak, while she was given only five minutes. During her visit, Banerjee will also inaugurate her party's new office in Delhi. Meanwhile, Banerjee on Thursday visited SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for a follow-up of her leg injury that she had received while campaigning for the party in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections.
