Tension erupts as HYDRA razes illegal structures in Jubilee Hills
On the complaint filed by the representatives of Jubilee Hills Society and residents of the area that the open drain has been encroached and illegal structures were constructed, HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath has examined this matter at the field level. On Friday, HYDRA took up demolitions of the illegal structures and razed them across an area covering more than 500 yards.
HYDRA authorities identified these illegal constructions as major obstacles to proper drainage flow which increased flood risks in city during heavy rains, and conducted the demolition drive.
Following the demolition, HYDRA reclaimed two acres of park land and nala land worth more than Rs 200 crore.
A tenant who rented a house had occupied the land intended for government and public purposes without the knowledge of the owner. The tenant was running hotels and hostels and collecting rent of Rs 10 lakh per month.
HYDRA said after notices were issued in the past, the tenant had approached the court. The court stated that the tenant had no right over those structures. The removal of structures that were encroaching on the nala and the road was taken up with the court orders.
Meanwhile, HYDRA on Thursday night responded promptly to flooding in Maruthinagar, Champapet, after unseasonal rains on Wednesday night caused water to enter several homes. The flooding was triggered by a mismatch in canal sizes between the floodwater canal from Salkam Cheruvu and the narrower canal in Maruthinagar. The local box drain was both undersized and clogged with garbage, leading to overflow.
HYDRA officials acted swiftly, deploying a JCB machine to clear the blockage. The floodwater is now flowing smoothly, bringing relief to residents.
Ranganath visited the affected area on Thursday for a ground-level inspection. He identified the primary causes of the flooding and highlighted the need to widen the Maruthinagar canal to ensure proper flow from upstream during heavy rains.
With the monsoon season approaching, the Commissioner instructed teams to remain on alert in flood-prone areas to prevent similar incidents.

Among those selected are Khejri — the state tree of Rajasthan known for its deep roots and drought resistance — along with Babool, Dhak, Neem, and Ber. Matikhal residents get desalinated water for the first time as min inaugurates supply
Berhampur: For the first time ever, the residents of Matikhal, a seashore village in Ganjam district, got access to desalinated drinking water on Sunday as Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated water supply to the hamlet from Odisha Sands Complex's (OSCOM) seawater desalination plant. Around four lakh liters of desalinated water will be supplied to the village every day from the plant, a unit of Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) in Matikhal near Chhatarpur in the district. The plant will also supply the water to Arjeepali, a nearby village soon. Around 1.50 million litres of desalinated water per day would be supplied to both the villages, which have a combined population of around 7,000. "Drinking water problem of these two seashore villages will be solved when they get desalinated water," Pradhan said after inaugurating the water supply. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the seawater desalination plant of IREL on March 5 last year through virtual mode from Bhubaneswar during his visit to the state. After stabilizing the 4.5ml capacity plant and testing it in several rounds, IREL has started to supply water to the nearby village, which was facing drinking water problems due to salinity in groundwater. Govt plans to expand emergency response vehicle fleet
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The govt has decided to substantially expand its fleet of emergency response vehicles (ERVs) and increase manpower to optimise the operation of the dial-112 system across the state. The dial-112 system, part of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), was introduced by the Centre in 2019 following the Nirbhaya case in Delhi. This initiative aims to ensure a swift police response, particularly for women in emergencies. The state govt launched its ERSS on March 19, 2021, consolidating multiple emergency numbers — police (100), fire (101), ambulance (108 and 102), and the women and child helpline (181) — into a single, unified platform. Under the new plan, the number of ERVs dispatched to assist people in distress across the state will be increased from 187 to 645. "While the ERSS was previously rolled out for district headquarters only, the govt now plans to expand the emergency network to all districts, enabling citizens in urban and rural areas to benefit," DGP Y B Khurania said. Police officials said that expanding the fleet will significantly improve response times and service quality. The presence of additional vehicles will also broaden operational coverage during emergencies, ensuring a rapid and coordinated response to distress calls. The state currently has 645 territorial police stations, and the existing 187 ERVs are insufficient to cover the entire state comprehensively. "Initially approved for two years (2019–2020 to 2020–2021), the ERSS scheme was extended for a second phase of four years (2021–22 to 2024–25). Recently, the state cabinet further extended the scheme for five years, from 2025–26 to 2029–30, with a total budget of Rs 2,260.89 crore to ensure uninterrupted and efficient emergency response services," DGP Khurania said. The govt has also sanctioned the creation of 4,195 new positions across various ranks, while eliminating vacant redundant posts, to ensure the full-fledged implementation of the scheme. Assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) will be deployed in the ERVs, replacing the initial plan to engage retired police personnel. "To bolster disaster resilience and ensure continuous public service, there is a plan to set up a mirror emergency response centre (MERC) in Sambalpur, complementing the existing state emergency response centre (SERS) in Bhubaneswar," the DGP said. According to a recent govt order, the home department has been tasked with developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to monitor and evaluate the performance of ERVs. Additionally, efforts will be made to reduce emergency response times. "A third-party audit and impact assessment will be conducted to ensure optimal resource utilisation. To prevent duplication, any similar vehicle-hiring schemes under women's safety initiatives will be integrated with the ERSS," the order stated.
