Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 11

Yahoo05-08-2025
Tuesday's onslaught of rain didn't stop the Carolina Panthers from getting in some more work. In fact, one rookie even took to the wet conditions.
Here are the top takeaways and observations from Tuesday's outing of training camp . . .
Held Ransom
2025 fourth-round pick Lathan Ransom was the star of this morning's session, where he tallied an interception of starting quarterback Bryce Young and a sack of third-stringer Jack Plummer.
Head coach Dave Canales praised the rookie safety for his preparedness.
"I think one thing that I'm noticing about him is he always seems to be in great position to make a play," Canales told reporters. "And that comes with study, that comes with being disciplined about owning your leverage, analyzing the formation, run-pass and then putting yourselves in an athletic position to make plays. And I couldn't be happier with where he's at and where he's headed."
Ransom also hit the lectern following practice, and credited his veteran teammates for teeing up the good vibes in some not-so-good weather.
"Yeah, I think the [defensive backs] brought a lot of energy today—between Jaycee [Horn], Mike [Jackson], Demani [Richardson], Tre [Swilling], all them, Nick [Scott]," Ransom stated. "Lettin' us know that it don't matter if it's raining or snowing, we gotta go out there and show up."
The 23-year-old defensive back is one of a few youngsters vying for the starting job next to free-agent addition Tre'von Moehrig. Ransom's stiffest competition has been second-year safety Demani Richardson, who has also stood out this summer.
Hamstrung
Both wide receiver Hunter Renfrow and rookie outside linebacker Nic Scourton have been sidelined due to mild hamstring injuries. But Canales seemed optimistic about their outlooks moving forward.
"He is doin' great," he said of Renfrow. "He's in return-to-play right now with our training department. He's running, he's cutting. I think it's just the load of practice that we're just trying to be smart on, and just get him completely healthy so we can really see him in these games. And I feel really strongly that he's there, but I think it's more of a capacity thing."
Canales said Scourton is in the "same boat."
Their statuses for Friday's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns has not yet been determined.
More rain in this cloud
That preseason opener will be preceded by a joint practice between the two teams on Wednesday. And just like this morning, tomorrow's session is set to be a rainy one.
Canales, however, doesn't seem worried about the forecast.
"We're just gonna practice," Canales said. "The field was great. The turf itself, there wasn't a lot of slipping. Our grounds crew have done an amazing job just making sure that it's draining properly and all that. So, we'll go out there, we'll practice.
"And I think Kevin [Stefanski] kinda expects that. He texted me this morning. He said, 'It looks like rain for the next 37 days.' But it'll be good. The energy will be good. They won't even be thinking about the water, I promise you. It'll be about this opportunity to go against other pros."

Fulham opening bid for Kevin rejected by Shakhtar Donetsk

Fulham have seen their opening bid for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Kevin rejected. Marco Silva is desperate to bolster his attack this summer, with Kevin identified as a 22-year-old scored nine goals and provided four assists in all competitions last season, and predominantly plays off the left flank. Shakhtar sources say Fulham's opening offer was worth €30million (£26m) and, as expected, was turned down. The Ukrainian giants are understood to be holding out for closer to their €50m (£43m) valuation for the Brazilian. Fulham have also shown an interest in Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who spent last season on loan with them. Nelson is looking for a new club for the upcoming season and Arsenal are open to offers for him. The winger's preference is thought to be staying in London and he would be happy to return to Fulham. Fulham have been quiet in the transfer window so far, but their business is expected to ramp up over the coming weeks. Marco Silva's side achieved a club-record number of Premier League points last season and they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Silva is keen to kick on this season and achieve a top-half finish, with players in the squad eager to qualify for European football.

Jose Iglesias, Jackson Merrill hit home runs as Padres beat Giants again, 5-1

SAN FRANCISCO — Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer in the second inning, Jackson Merrill connected in the eighth for insurance, and the San Diego Padres beat the struggling San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Tuesday night. San Diego moved into a first-place tie with the Dodgers in the NL West race after Los Angeles lost to the Angels in 10 innings — a position Padres manager Mike Shildt expected his club to be for the season's stretch run. Jake Croneworth contributed an RBI single in the fourth and Jason Adam (8-3) worked out of a bases-loaded jam by getting the final two outs of the sixth for the win. The Padres took a lead in the first getting Manny Machado's two-out single followed by a double from Xander Bogaerts before Robbie Ray (9-6) was called for a balk that brought home the first run. San Francisco — which lost for the 12th time in 13 home games — tied it on Wilmer Flores' two-out single in the bottom half. Heliot Ramos broke a bat over his knee in frustration in the second following strikeouts in consecutive at-bats. The Giants dropped their fourth straight game and Ray's winless stretch reached seven starts since beating Arizona on July 3 in Phoenix. The lefty allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings, struck out four and walked one. San Diego's Nestor Cortes struck out six with one walk while giving up one run and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. San Francisco's Dominic Smith extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games with a pinch-hit single to load the bases in the sixth and chase David Morgan. The Padres secured their season-best fifth straight winning series and improved to 8-1-2 over their last 11 series dating to July 4-6 against Texas. RHP Nick Pivetta (11-4, 2.94 ERA) pitches the series finale for San Diego, while the Giants send RHP Kai-Wei Teng (1-1, 5.40) to the mound for his second start and third appearance of 2025. ___ AP MLB:
