Red Sox Face Alex Bregman Decision After $230M Update

Newsweek3 days ago
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The Boston Red Sox announced a long-term decision on the future of their franchise on Wednesday and now they face a more immediate one.
The team reached an extension agreement with rookie Roman Anthony, anointing him as their outfielder of the future with an eight-year deal. The contract includes several escalators for Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Award finishes as well as All-Star appearances, and could be worth as much as $230 million when it's all said and done.
Obviously, the Red Sox like what they've seen from the young slugger. Anthony has slashed .276/.392/.417 with two homers in his first 163 at-bats with the big-league club after slashing .288/.423/.491 with 10 homers in 212 at-bats at Triple-A earlier this season.
But at just 21 years old, Anthony is unlikely to lead the Red Sox to a World Series anytime soon. And as a result the team could be looking to extend some more tenured players in the near future following the update on his contract.

"Wilyer Abreu, Alex Bregman, Marcelo Mayer, and Carlos Narvaez are all good candidates for a deal but their expectations may not align with what the Sox are thinking," Peter Abraham noted for The Boston Globe. "Scott Boras, who represents Bregman, believes players can only find their true worth as free agents. But he also did the deals when Jose Altuve and Matt Chapman agreed to extensions."
Abreu and Narvaez are still in pre-arbitration, while Mayer is a rookie. But Bregman seems likely to opt out of his contract and explore free agency this offseason if the Red Sox don't extend him first, leaving them with a pressing decision to make.
After investing so much in Anthony, the Red Sox can opt to do the same with Bregman and signal some win-now urgency. Or they can stand pat and content to prioritize the future over the present. Their decision will say a lot about the franchise priorities.

Yankees' Amed Rosario lands on IL, expects to miss the minimum 10 days

The Yankees have lost another of their trade deadline acquisitions. Amed Rosario has been placed on the 10-day IL with a left SC joint sprain. Rosario collided with the left field wall on Friday, and it appears he'll have to miss some time. The speedster did tell reporters that he expects to be able to return after the minimum 10 days, though, which is certainly encouraging news. Rosario has appeared in just four games since being acquired from the Washington Nationals, going 3-for-7 at the plate with a double and an RBI over that span. Outfielder Austin Slater is also currently sidelined with an injury and reliever Jake Bird is down in Triple-A after struggling mightily in his first few outings, leaving New York without three of their new pickups. In a corresponding roster move, catcher J.C. Escarra has been recalled from Triple-A. Escarra has served as New York's No.2 backstop this season, but he was sent down to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week to make room for Slater.

BetMGM Bonus Code WIREBG150: Snag $150 in Bonus Bets for Sunday NFL, MLB, NASCAR & More

Bears fans believe Johnson, who concocted the Lions' amazing offense, will be the one to unlock quarterback Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick in last year's draft. BetMGM Bonus Code Promos: Get $150 in Bonus Bets or $1500 First-Bet Offer Two months ago today, the Brewers entered their game with a 35-32 record. They were treading water in the NL Central. But Brewers starter Quinn Priester shut down the Braves that day to trigger an incredible run that has them atop the MLB standings. In today's action, Priester takes on the Mets. Over the last two months, Priester has posted an 8-0 record and the Brewers have won all 10 of his starts. Just sayin'. Hit the MLB tab on your BetMGM app to see all the way you can play on today's games. There are just three races left until the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs begin. There are 13 drivers who have clinched spots, which means there are three more available. If any driver who hasn't already won a race this season takes the checkered flag at today's Go Bowling at The Glen — the 220.5-mile race at Watkins Glen — then they'll grab a playoff spot, too. Because it's a road course, Shane van Gisbergen is the favorite, but it's worth checking BetMGM's NASCAR odds to see all the value bets. Ready to play? Cleveland Guardians are making historic chase of Detroit Tigers

Cleveland Guardians are making historic chase of Detroit Tigers originally appeared on The Sporting News A month ago, the Cleveland Guardians lost 10 games in a row. They could hardly score. It was miserable. That had to be the end for their hopes this season, right? Wrong. The Guardians are on an incredible run, the Detroit Tigers are cold, and the playoff race is on. When Cleveland went on its 10-game losing streak, it fell as many as 15.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central race. Now, entering Sunday, the Guardians are just five games back. MORE: Mookie Betts admits 'this season's over' after brutal struggles It's a confluence of factors. The Guardians have discovered themselves again. Players not named Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan are hitting again, including fresh call-up C.J. Kayfus, who is coming off the two best hitting games of his young career. Trading away the rehabbing Shane Bieber at the trade deadline hasn't depleted the Guardians. Neither has the leave of absence for closer Emmanuel Clase amid a sports betting investigation. MORE: Mariners are on the best home run hitting, base stealing run in MLB history Sure, that could all could come back to bite them at some point. But for now, the Guardians are playing with a swagger, and the Tigers aren't playing to the level they were in the first half of the season. There's a playoff race to be had. The Guardians of recent vintage have shown they can get hot down the stretch. No one in Cleveland is betting against that happening again now.
