Mosul families demand truth on 600 missing under ISIS
Shafaq News – Mosul Dozens of families in Mosul's Wadi Hajar district staged a protest on Tuesday, urging Iraqi authorities to reveal the fate of more than 600 men who vanished after ISIS seized the city in 2014. Gathering on the Right Bank of Mosul, once the group's declared capital in Nineveh, the protesters carried photographs of their loved ones and banners demanding official clarification. The missing were policemen and civilians who disappeared during the militants' occupation and remain unaccounted for eight years after the city's liberation. Speaking with Shafaq News, one of the protesters, Um Ahmed, praised Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil for reopening the file of al-Khafsa — a massive natural sinkhole about 20 kilometers south of Mosul that is considered one of the world's largest mass graves, with estimates ranging from 3,000 victims to far higher. 'If they are martyrs, we want to bury them with dignity. If they are alive, we demand their release,' she said. 'We have been waiting for years, and no one has come to ask about us.' Residents of Wadi Hajar stress that their suffering did not end with Mosul's liberation. They insist some of the missing were seen later in Iraqi prisons, while other accounts suggest ISIS executed them and dumped the bodies in al-Khafsa.

Iraq pledges support for al-Khasfa mass grave investigation
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Monday, the Iraqi government pledged to assist efforts to identify victims of the al-Khasfa mass grave in Nineveh and ensure their rights are protected. In a statement, Government Spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi said new evidence of ISIS crimes continues to emerge years after the group's defeat, noting that the al-Khasfa site contains the remains of thousands of Iraqis from different communities. He affirmed Baghdad's backing for legal and technical measures to identify the dead, aid families, and secure international recognition of the crime. Excavations at the site began on August 17 under the supervision of Nineveh Governor Abdul Qader al-Dakhil and Appeals Court Chief Judge Raed al-Muslih, with officials and specialists present. Known locally as al-Khafsa, the natural sinkhole lies 20 kilometers south of Mosul and served as a killing ground during ISIS's control of the city from 2014 to 2017. Estimates put the number of victims at around 3,000, though some reports suggest much higher. Despite years of appeals from families and rights groups, the site remained sealed after Mosul's liberation in 2017. It is considered one of the world's largest mass graves and continues to attract pressure for urgent action to reveal its full scale and provide answers to relatives of the missing.

Iraqi troops uncover ISIS remnants after airstrike
Shafaq News – Saladin Iraqi security forces recovered the remains of three ISIS militants along with weapons and logistical materials in Wadi al-Shay, east of the Saladin operations sector, an Iraqi security source reported on Sunday. The source told Shafaq News that a unit from the 11th Division, supported by intelligence and reconnaissance elements, inspected the site of yesterday's air raid carried out by Iraqi F-16 fighter jets. The operation uncovered the remains of three militants, whose identities will be confirmed after examination, in addition to weapons, destroyed and buried vehicles, and other materials, the source stated, noting that the mission is still ongoing. Iraq's Joint Operations Command announced yesterday two airstrikes targeting ISIS remnants in Saladin and Kirkuk, pointing out that the first strike, conducted on August 12 after days of surveillance, hit a key hideout in Wadi al-Shay, destroying the site and killing several militants inside.
