Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) confirmed that it has temporarily halted production at its assembly plant in East London.
The company told IOL that the planned non-production period, effective from June 24 to July 30, 2025, is a normal occurrence.
'An annual non-production period at the East London production plant is standard procedure and it is common cause for production plants to suspend production based on volume adjustments in the production programme,' an MBSA spokesperson said.
'Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) continually assesses and adjusts its production planning in alignment with global demand, market dynamics, and the company's strategic objectives.'
However, the spokesperson would not be drawn on speculation that US tariff structures might have led to the production halt, stating that the company was continuously assessing the impact of the new US tariffs, but that it would not comment further on the matter.
South Africa is currently attempting to negotiate a more beneficial trade arrangement with the US after Donald Trump imposed a 25% blanket tariff on all automotive imports into the country.
The US is a major export destination for MBSA, which currently produces the C-Class sedan in both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive guises for numerous world markets.

The facility currently employs 2,400 people, and produced a volume of 70,000 vehicles in 2024, making it one of the country's top automotive exporters.
When asked previously, MBSA representatives could not confirm the percentage of its vehicles exported to the US, due to international sales reporting protocol.
South Africa's top exports in 2025 are the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Ranger, Mercedes C-Class and BMW X3.
VWSA also temporarily shut its Eastern Cape plant in Kariega from April 14 to May 12, however this was in order to upgrade the factory for a new compact SUV model, which will be launched in 2027.

This new logo holds far more symbolism, with the hoops of the jersey making up an icon that represents the unity of the various communities that support our team. But this is about far more than just a logo. This is a statement about how we see ourselves and the way we connect with those who support us. We want all of them with us every step of the way as we break new ground.' Director of Rugby John Dobson emphasized that the new identity aligns with the Stormers' broader mission to 'make Cape Town smile.' 'This team is one of the best-supported in the world. We have some of the most vibrant rugby communities and no shortage of passion at every level. This is a big step forward in many ways as we take the DHL Stormers from being a rugby team to so much more. We are 'in it together' with everyone who is coming on this exciting new journey with us,' Dobson said. The updated logo marks a symbolic step in the Stormers' evolution, reflecting both their history and their ambitions as they look to the future. IOL Sport

He said iKhokha's mission and technology aligned 'perfectly' with the bank's aim of digital transformation in the SME sector. The transaction also marked a successful exit for iKhokha's long-standing investors - Apis Partners, Crossfin Holdings, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). These investors played a big role in supporting the management team in scaling iKhokha's operations and product innovation. 'Their exit reflects the strong performance and strategic value of the business and underscores their confidence in Nedbank's ability to take iKhokha into its next phase of growth.' Crossfin had backed the iKhokha founders from the initial concept to become a uniquely positioned business with an attractive growth profile and much to offer the South African SME market. CEO and co-founder of iKhokha, Matt Putman, said joining forces with Nedbank gave them the platform to scale their impact, further accelerate product innovation, and unlock new value for their merchants.

US imposes sanctions on DRC armed group PARECO-FF, mining firms over illicit minerals

The US on Tuesday announced sanctions against an armed group aligned with Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) military as well as a Congolese mining company and two Hong Kong-based exporters over armed violence and the sale of critical minerals. The measures are the latest taken by the administration of President Donald Trump to try to bring peace to eastern DRC, where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels staged a lightning advance earlier this year, spurring violence that has killed thousands of people. The treasury department said it is putting sanctions on the Coalition des Patriotes Resistants Congolais-Forces de Frappe (PARECO-FF), a militia that it said controlled mining sites in the mineral-rich region of Rubaya from 2022 to 2024. Rubaya, now controlled by M23, produces 15% of the world's coltan, which is processed into a heat-resistant metal called tantalum that is in high demand from makers of mobile phones, computers and other applications in the electronics, aerospace and medical industries. The new sanctions, which restrict trade with US companies and persons, also target the Congolese mining company Cooperative des Artisanaux Miniers du Congo (CDMC), which the treasury department said sold critical minerals smuggled from PARECO-FF areas of control, and the Hong Kong-based export companies East Rise Corporation Limited and Star Dragon Corporation Limited, which it said bought those minerals. A senior US government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington was seeking to raise the cost of illicit trade "to make the licit trade that much more appealing."
