‘UPA government ignored my warning against PMLA, BJP later misused it': Pawar

Hindustan Times18-05-2025

MUMBAI: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had ignored his warning about the possible misuse of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to its own detriment—after the BJP came to power, PMLA was used to suppress opposition leaders by using the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Pawar was speaking at the launch of Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut's book 'Narkatala Swarg' (Heaven In Hell) on his 101 days in jail in 2022. The book was launched by Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar and Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale.
'When our cabinet colleague P Chidambaram tabled a proposal to amend the PMLA, I had warned PM Manmohan Singh that it could be misused,' said Pawar. 'After 2014, the BJP government used the same act to send Chidambaram and many other opposition leaders to jail in fake cases. MP Sanjay Raut and Anil Deshmukh were victims of this Act.'
Uddhav Thackeray said that the current 'autocratic' regime had turned a heaven like India into a hell by its misuse of central investigation agencies, and added that since India followed a federal structure, states too should be allowed to use these agencies. Hinting at the Gujarati element, he said it was a 'strange coincidence' that Moraraji Desai, Rajni Patel and now Modi-Shah wanted to finish the Shiv Sena. 'It's because the party raised its voice for Marathi and Mumbai,' he said.
Akhtar lauded Raut for his 'fearless expression'. 'Democracy needs different political parties and citizens without political loyalty to any party who raise their voice on society's problems and the government's mistakes,' he said. 'I represent that section of society. Extremists from both sides dislike us. One side tells me to go to hell, and other side tells me to go to Pakistan. If there is a choice, I would choose hell over Pakistan,' he quipped. Akhtar also slammed ruling party leaders who criticised Raut's book before its launch.
Earlier, Raut said he decided not to surrender before the 'brutal regime'. 'The memories of jail are bitter, of course, but one has to leave it at that and look at it as experience,' he said. 'Those who are willing to work in the opposition against the autocratic regime should read this book. The lesson of history is that dictatorship does not last for long.'
TMC MP Gokhale said the union government had created trouble for itself by sending Raut to jail. 'This book will be read as history after a few decades and people will know that there was a dictator and there was Amit Shah and a few people who fought against the brutal regime,' he said.

From appeasement to report card politics: BJP hails ‘new normal' under Modi govt

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday described the eleven years of the Modi government as transformational and the one that redefined and reshaped Indian politics. Addressing a press conference at the party HQs, BJP President J.P. Nadda said that in the past 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed the culture of Indian politics, and it should be etched in the history books in golden letters. He said the Modi government has brought defining change in the country's politics and marked a decisive shift from -- politics of appeasement to the politics of report cards. 'This has become the new normal,' Nadda said. '11 years ago, appeasement and division of society on caste and religion were the political culture. But after 2014, a responsible government took charge under PM Modi, which started the politics of the report card,' he added. 'A remarkable transformation has taken place in the past eleven years. In the past, politics was often driven by appeasement politics, but that has now shifted to politics of performance, accountability, and responsible governance. This has now become the new normal,' he said. Nadda credited the Prime Minister for ushering in bold reforms across sectors and also for launching path-breaking initiatives like revoking Article 370 and Triple Talaq. 'Our government took bold and historic decisions in the national interest. We abrogated Article 370 and abolished Triple Talaq. We enacted a new Waqf Act and passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). We also ensured 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies,' the BJP chief pointed out. He said that it is difficult to present a full account of 11 years of governance in a single press conference; however, he underscored that the gamut of visionary policies and bold reforms has laid the foundation of a developed and self-reliant India. He said that bold and transparent governance under PM Modi has laid the foundation for a futuristic administration, and this will pave the way for the realisation of the Viksit Bharat dream. The growing public sentiment of 'Modi hai tau mumkin hai' shows people's unflinching faith and confidence in PM Modi's leadership and reinforces the belief that even arduous tasks can be overcome under his stewardship, he opined. Nadda further underlined the government's unwavering commitment towards building Bharat of everyone's dreams and said that the mantra of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas' remains its governing principle.

EC must address Rahul Gandhi's doubts on Maharashtra polls, says Prashant Kishor

Patna, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has said the Election Commission should come clean on doubts raised about the Maharashtra assembly polls by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi . The former poll strategist said that while he did not consider himself a "specialist" in these matters, the EC should respond to allegations made "in writing" by Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha . "The Congress is the main opposition party in the country. Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. Hence, the EC should dispel any doubts that he has raised," Kishor told reporters. Live Events Notably, Gandhi had last week written an article in a national English daily wherein he had alleged that the assembly polls held in Maharashtra last year were not free and fair, a reason why these were swept by the NDA , months after the BJP-led coalition was drubbed in the Lok Sabha polls in the western state. The Election Commission, on its part, has come out with a point-by-point rebuttal. Kishor said, "Rahul Gandhi has not expressed his view not in a bite but in writing, through a newspaper article". However, Kishor had in the past worked with the Congress as an election consultant and had also toyed with the idea of formally joining that party prior to floating his own outfit. "As such, if doubts remain in people's minds about the fairness of the electoral process, it would not be good for a democracy. Hence, the EC must come forward and dispel all misgivings," he said.

Is Karnataka govt considering moving Chinnaswamy stadium out of Bengaluru's CBD? Here's what CM Siddaramaiah said

Amid growing concerns and public outrage over the recent stampede that claimed 11 lives near Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday broke his silence on the possibility of relocating the cricket stadium from the heart of Bengaluru's Central Business District (CBD). Speaking to reporters, he said the government would 'seriously consider' the idea and promised that any decision would be taken after thorough consultation with all stakeholders. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has deeply hurt me and my government,' Siddaramaiah said, reacting to the chaos that unfolded during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on June 4. Located in one of the busiest parts of the city, Chinnaswamy Stadium has long been a traffic nightmare whenever major cricket events are held. The venue can seat around 35,000 spectators, but on June 4, over 3 lakh people reportedly gathered around the stadium for the public event, far exceeding police estimates and capacity. This overwhelming crowd surge is believed to be the primary reason for the tragic stampede that left dozens injured and sparked a political storm. Head Constable Narasimharaju, in a rare show of defiance, even staged a solo protest, saying that suspending senior officials demoralized the force and ignored systemic lapses in planning and crowd control. The BJP has also slammed the Congress-led government, demanding the resignations of CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and even announced a month's salary donation by its legislators to support the victims' families.
