Is Karnataka govt considering moving Chinnaswamy stadium out of Bengaluru's CBD? Here's what CM Siddaramaiah said

Hindustan Times2 days ago

Amid growing concerns and public outrage over the recent stampede that claimed 11 lives near Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday broke his silence on the possibility of relocating the cricket stadium from the heart of Bengaluru's Central Business District (CBD). Speaking to reporters, he said the government would 'seriously consider' the idea and promised that any decision would be taken after thorough consultation with all stakeholders.

'The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has deeply hurt me and my government,' Siddaramaiah said, reacting to the chaos that unfolded during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on June 4.
Located in one of the busiest parts of the city, Chinnaswamy Stadium has long been a traffic nightmare whenever major cricket events are held. The venue can seat around 35,000 spectators, but on June 4, over 3 lakh people reportedly gathered around the stadium for the public event, far exceeding police estimates and capacity. This overwhelming crowd surge is believed to be the primary reason for the tragic stampede that left dozens injured and sparked a political storm.

Following the incident, the Karnataka government suspended top police officers, including the city's Commissioner, drawing sharp criticism from both opposition parties and within the police department. Head Constable Narasimharaju, in a rare show of defiance, even staged a solo protest, saying that suspending senior officials demoralized the force and ignored systemic lapses in planning and crowd control.
The BJP has also slammed the Congress-led government, demanding the resignations of CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and even announced a month's salary donation by its legislators to support the victims' families.

West Bengal govt to allow residential consumers to opt out from power smart meters: Official

KOLKATA : Amid protests over alleged inflated electricity bills following the installation of prepaid smart meters, the West Bengal government has decided to allow residential power consumers to opt out from the system and revert to traditional devices, an official said on Tuesday. The government had on Monday temporarily suspended fresh installations of smart meters for domestic consumers, he said. "The installation of smart meters for residential consumers has been temporarily suspended, but there is no plan for a mass recall. Consumers can choose to switch back to conventional meters," the official said. The prepaid smart meter installation will continue for commercial and government establishments, the official said. The decision comes after the BJP and the Left Front have been accusing the Trinamool Congress government of "burdening households with sudden tariff hikes and opaque smart meter installation". There had been protests in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and Bardhaman, where people alleged their bills doubled or tripled after smart meter installations. The Mamata Banerjee government had earlier approved large-scale smart meter deployment to help the cash-strapped utility, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, recover dues. The state government departments alone owed over Rs 1,500 crore to the discom, which has a total debt of Rs 15,400 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal, the official said. In May, Polaris Smart Metering secured a Rs 2,246-crore contract to install 2.2 million smart meters in West Bengal under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'

After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken. Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike. In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police. The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality. Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said. 'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said. Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her. However, the Opposition BJP used the incident to accuse the TMC of 'goondaism' and claimed that people were 'no more afraid of the ruling party'. 'This is not a mere scuffle between two women. The lady in white salwar kameez is an elected representative. She is the TMC councillor Srabanti Roy. Good to see that people are not bowing down under TMC's fear and rather standing up against this sort of goondaism,' BJP leader Keya Ghosh wrote on X. Elon Musk supports world's richest investor Warren Buffett's 5-minute plan to erase America's deficit, shares emoji

Warren Buffett The U.S. government has been grappling with persistent budget deficits, spending far more than it collects in revenue year after year. Despite efforts from both political parties, the national debt has ballooned to $33.8 trillion as of June 2025, with no clear end in sight. Amid this fiscal crisis, a radical idea from legendary investor Warren Buffett is gaining renewed attention and high-profile support. In a 2011 CNBC interview, Buffett proposed a strikingly simple solution to curb runaway deficits: 'I could end the deficit in five minutes. You just pass a law that says that any time there's a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.' The resurfaced clip has gone viral, sparking a heated debate about accountability in Washington. Tesla CEO Elon Musk responds with emoji Utah Senator Mike Lee amplified the idea by reposting the video on X, asking, 'Would you support this amendment?' The post ignited a firestorm of responses, including a resounding endorsement from Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk, who wrote, '100%. This is the way.' Other prominent voices, including economist Peter Schiff, chimed in, tweeting, 'Buffett's plan is brutal but brilliant. Congress would finally feel the heat of their own fiscal mess.' Lee isn't just stirring the pot online—he's taking action. 'I'm drafting a constitutional amendment to oust every member of Congress whenever inflation exceeds 3%. It's better to disqualify politicians than for an entire nation to suffer under the yoke of inflation,' he wrote on X. Lee's proposal tweaks Buffett's original idea, tying congressional eligibility to inflation rather than deficits, though both metrics are closely linked to government spending. US economy in tough place The U.S. fiscal situation paints a grim picture. In fiscal 2024, the U.S. economy generated $28.83 trillion in GDP, while federal spending reached $6.75 trillion against $4.92 trillion in revenue, resulting in a $1.83 trillion deficit—6.3% of GDP, double Buffett's proposed threshold. The Congressional Budget Office projects deficits will climb to $2.6 trillion by 2034, driven by rising interest payments on the national debt, now costing over $1 trillion annually. Economists have long warned about the link between deficits and inflation. Nobel laureate Milton Friedman famously argued, 'What produces [inflation] is too much government spending and too much government creation of money and nothing else.' Recent data supports this: inflation hit 3.2% in 2024, above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, fueled partly by expansive fiscal policies. The M2 money supply, a key driver of inflation, grew by 6% in 2024, according to Federal Reserve reports, reflecting continued monetary expansion. Warren Buffet and Mike Lee proposal aims to fix responsibility Buffett's and Lee's proposals aim to force accountability by tying lawmakers' jobs to economic outcomes. However, passing a constitutional amendment is a daunting task, requiring two-thirds approval in both the House and Senate and ratification by 38 states. Critics argue the plan could backfire. 'Kicking out every member of Congress during a deficit spike could paralyze governance and lead to inexperienced replacements,' said political analyst Sarah Klein in a recent Washington Post op-ed. Others note that deficits often surge during crises—like pandemics or recessions—when spending is necessary, potentially punishing lawmakers for unavoidable decisions. Supporters counter that the threat of mass ousting would incentivize fiscal discipline. 'Congress has no skin in the game,' tweeted economist Nouriel Roubini. 'Buffett's idea flips that script.' Public sentiment on X leans heavily in favor, with polls showing 68% of 12,000 respondents supporting Lee's amendment. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
