NEW DELHI: A woman in Gujarat's Patan district allegedly killed a man with the help of her lover, dressed the corpse in her clothes, and set it on fire in a bid to fake her own death, police said on Wednesday, according to news agency PTI.
The charred body was discovered near a pond on the outskirts of Jakhotra village in Santalpur taluka late Tuesday night.
Initially mistaken for 22-year-old Geeta Ahir, the body was later identified as that of 56-year-old Harjibhai Solanki, a nomadic resident of nearby Vauva village.
Geeta and her 21-year-old partner Bharat Ahir were arrested early Wednesday from Palanpur railway station, where they were allegedly waiting to board a train to Rajasthan.
"Geeta, who lives with her husband in Jakhotra, devised the plan after watching the film 'Drishyam'," said Patan Superintendent of Police V K Nayi. "She convinced her lover to help her find a dead body so they could fake her death and flee together."
According to police, Geeta left home on Tuesday night while her family was asleep. When her husband and other relatives began searching for her, they found a half-burnt body lying near a pond on the outskirts of the village. '
Since Geeta's ghagra (long traditional skirt) and her anklets were found on the body, her kin initially thought that it was Geeta's body.
However, after bringing the body home, they found that the deceased was a man,' Nayi said.
Police launched a murder investigation and identified the deceased as Solanki. "Bharat spotted Solanki on May 26 and offered him a lift. He then strangled him at a secluded location and transported the body to the pond area," said Nayi.
Geeta allegedly met Bharat at the site with petrol. The couple dressed Solanki in her clothes and set the body alight before heading to Palanpur station. 'They admitted to the crime during interrogation,' the official said.
Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Around 8:30 p.m. on June 5, while both were at Gupta's Versova office, Lashkar once again asked about his pending salary. This reportedly angered Gupta, who began shouting at him. He then allegedly took a kitchen knife and stabbed Lashkar on the right side of his torso. Despite being injured, Lashkar managed to leave the office and called out for help. A nearby driver and the building's watchman came to his aid. Lashkar then took an auto-rickshaw to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle West, where he received treatment. Once his condition stabilised, Lashkar went to the Versova police station and filed a complaint. Based on his statement, Manish Gupta was booked under sections 118(2), 115(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include charges of causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon and using insulting words likely to cause a breach of peace. So far, no arrest has been made. The investigation is ongoing. Manish Gupta is known for directing films such as Rahasya and The Stoneman Murders. As of now, he has not made any public statement about the incident. The police are checking CCTV footage to verify the facts,' said an officer from Versova Police Station, as reported by mid-day. Reportedly, when attempts were made to reach out to Manish Gupta, he directed the reporter to speak with his lawyer, Dinesh Tiwari, who said all claims against the filmmaker have no ground and are just a scheme to make money. He said, 'The allegation against my client Mr. Manish Gupta, is baseless and false, and is nothing but an attempt to extort money from my client. The complainant Mr. Rabijul has a past criminal record, he has previously defrauded a bank and has a criminal case pending against him. The complainant Mr. Rabijul, guided by many of his relatives/friends, has fabricated the entire issue as a pressure tactic to extort money from my client. Filmmaker Manish Gupta was booked for allegedly injuring his driver with a kitchen knife, a Mumbai police official said on Friday. Gupta allegedly attacked his driver after an argument over the latter's salary. The incident took place on Thursday night in Gupta's residence in Sagar Sanjog building, the Versova police station official was quoted by news agency PTI as saying. 'Gupta allegedly injured his driver Rajibul Islam Lashkar (32),' the official said. Gupta was booked under sections 118(2), 115(2) and 352 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and other offences. He is yet to be arrested, police said. Lashkar's advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh sought immediate arrest of Gupta. According to Free Press Journal, the FIR stated that Lashkar had worked with the filmmaker for three years, for a salary of ₹ 23,000. However, Lashkar alleged that he was never paid on time. On May 30, Gupta allegedly sacked him without clearing his dues. To earn back his money, Lashkar rejoined duty, but was still not paid, the driver reportedly claimed. This led to a verbal argument between the two on Friday night at the filmmaker's Versova residence. Lashkar alleged that Gupta stabbed him with a kitchen knife during the argument. He then rushed to the nearby Cooper Hospital. After receiving medical treatment, he filed an FIR against filmmaker Gupta at the Versova Police Station. A screenwriter and director, Manish Gupta has directed films like The Stoneman Murders and 420 IPC. His last directorial venture was the 2023 legal drama, One Friday Night, which starred Raveena Tandon and Milind Soman. He had earlier served as a writer in Ramgopal Varma's team, writing the screenplay of films like D and Sarkar.
