BJP MLA Lonikar faces flak for his remarks against farmers

The Hindu6 hours ago

Mumbai
Maharashtra BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar triggered a political storm on Thursday with controversial remarks suggesting farmers should not criticise the government because they have benefitted from various welfare schemes.
Speaking at an event for the Har Ghar Solar scheme in Partur, Jalna district, Mr. Lonikar said: '[Prime Minister] Modi gave ₹6,000 for sowing, the State gives the rest. We give salaries to mothers, pensions to fathers, and our sisters and daughters benefit from the Ladki Bahin scheme. We have given them clothes, shoes, phones, yet people keep criticising us.'
The comments were widely condemned as condescending and arrogant.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis distanced the party from the remarks, saying, 'The statement was wrong. Prime Minister Modi calls himself the pradhan sevak. We are public servants, not masters.'
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule echoed the sentiment, saying, 'Once we take votes, we become public servants. No one has the right to speak like this'.
'Arrogance of power'
A video clip of Mr. Lonikar's speech quickly went viral on social media, drawing flak from the Opposition, which termed the remarks 'tasteless' and against democracy.
'This is nothing but the arrogance of power. We start doing the math and see what your government has given and taken back,' said farmers' leader and former MP Raju Shetti, alleging that Mr. Modi has also given eight farmer suicides a day.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Bhaskar Jadhav took a swipe, saying, 'Before 2014, he had no clothes or footwear. Apparently, he got everything after Modi came to power.' His party colleague MLC Ambadas Danve called Mr. Lonikar an 'indigenous version of the British'.
Facing backlash, Mr. Lonikar later issued an apology. 'I was referring to a few individuals, not all farmers. My words are being misused. Still, I apologise to all farmers,' he said.

Tata Plans ₹500cr Trust for Families of Crash Victims

Tata Sons , the holding company of the Tata Group, has sought board approvals to set up a trust that will extend financial support to the families of the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. At an interim board meeting Thursday, chairman N Chandrasekaran apprised the board of the proposed trust structure, multiple sources told ET. Approvals have been sought for an estimated ₹500-crore allocation to the entity, said one of the sources cited above. Tata Sons had earlier considered setting up separate trusts — one for families of Indians and the other for foreign nationals who died in the crash. According to sources, the funds will be used for compensation payouts to the families of the 271 victims, medical care, and renovation of the affected medical school, where several facilities were gutted by the smouldering fuselage of the ill-fated aircraft that fell from the skies moments after take-off. The rest of the corpus will be earmarked for the long-term needs of the affected families. The trust, which is expected to be registered soon, will support both Indian citizens and foreign nationals, including several British passengers on board the flight. The initiative is being led by PB Balaji, group CFO of Tata Motors, who brings extensive experience in regulatory, financial, and corporate governance matters. The trust will also include individuals from outside the Tata Group to ensure robust governance and compliance, sources said. Tata Trusts is also likely to contribute to the fund. The board meeting was attended by Tata Trust nominees Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, and Vijay Singh. There are significant legal complexities related to claims from the crash, sources added. Tata Sons did not comment. PB Balaji is overseeing the framework and implementation of the trusts to ensure they remain compliant, transparent, and sensitive to the specific legal and cultural contexts of the affected families. The trust will be structured to provide sustained financial support to immediate family members, covering essentials such as children's education, healthcare, and daily living expenses. This goes beyond a one-time ex-gratia payment. The approach echoes the Tata Group's response to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, when a trust was set up to offer long-term financial and emotional support to employees and their families of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, operated by the Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company Ltd.

Days after BJP issues notice, UP MLA denies role in train assault

Jhansi: Days after a passenger was severely thrashed by a dozen people onboard the premium Vande Bharat Express in its executive class at Jhansi railway station, allegedly at the behest of Babina MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha, the BJP legislator presented his side of the story at a press conference on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Talking to the media, Parichha said that it was a very unfortunate incident, but he was not directly involved in instigating the attack. Referring to the entire CCTV video footage of the journey, he said, "I was with my family and requested the person to exchange the seat, which he declined. I then went to order some food for my family, for which I made a call after going to the lobby. Suddenly, the same person approached me and tried to pick up a quarrel. He was soon joined by his colleague, who was also travelling with him. Both of them continuously tried to instigate me by pointing their fingers at me and towards my family, but I still kept calm. My gunner tried to intervene, and the duo threatened him also." Parichha further said that he lodged an online complaint and asked for further security, fearing some further backlash. When asked whether the attackers were his men, Parichha said that his security guard called his people to attend to him as they feared some possible further verbal or physical attack. "I had the least inclination of how they suddenly got into the coach and started thrashing the man, and by the time I tried to stop it, it was all over. " After the video of the attack went viral, the BJP on Monday issued a show-cause notice to the two-time Babina (Jhansi) MLA. The party has sought an explanation within seven days for conduct deemed "indiscipline" that tarnished its image. The assault sparked fury online, with X users decrying the misuse of power on India's premium train. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Govind Narayan Shukla, BJP state unit general secretary, issued the notice, warning of "strict action" if Parichha's explanation, due at the party's state headquarters, is unsatisfactory. Claiming that some people were trying to tarnish his image, Parichha on Thursday said, "BJP is a party of discipline, and I am a disciplined worker of the party. I denounce the attack as an unfortunate event and have asked the GRP to take all legal actions against those involved in the attack. I even called up the person concerned and talked to him while resolving the issue." The incident unfolded on the evening of June 19 on the Bhopal-bound Vande Bharat Express in coach E2. A passenger (name withheld), occupying berth 49, was allegedly pressured by Parichha, who was travelling with his wife, son, and a security guard, to swap berth 8, allotted to the MLA. This led to an argument. When the train reached Jhansi station, around a dozen people stormed the coach and started thrashing the occupant repeatedly, leaving him with a bloodied nose and bloodstained clothes. The matter went viral on social media, with strong criticisms pouring in from all over.
