SoftBank Group seen booking modest fourth quarter loss as Vision Fund suffers

Time of India12-05-2025
Japanese technology investor
SoftBank Group
is expected to book a quarterly net loss of 26.9 billion yen ($184.4 million) on Tuesday as early-stage tech startups fell out of favour and losses widened at major portfolio firms.

The forecast downgrades are seen by analysts as being partially offset by a stronger yen and the continued rise in the share price of SoftBank's
telecommunications holdings
, such as T-Mobile, which finished the quarter up more than 20%, close to a record high.
The net loss for the January-March quarter is based on the average of five analyst estimates compiled by LSEG and compares to net income of 231 billion yen over the same period the previous year.
The share price of portfolio companies such as
Swiggy
and Ola Electric each fell around 40% over the period. Losses at each have ballooned since their listings last year in the face of intense competition in the
quick commerce
and electric vehicle sectors.
Nomura Securities analyst
Daisaku Masuno
forecast a collective loss of around $900 million for listed companies held in SoftBank's
Vision Fund
investment vehicles over the quarter.
Live Events
New venture capital investment concentrated in large established players over the quarter, while investment in earlier stage firms - such as those in the Vision Fund 2 - fell to the lowest level in five quarters, Crunchbase data showed.

SoftBank played a part in this, making its largest spending announcements in years, including in
ChatGPT
maker OpenAI, in which it committed to investing between $20 billion and $30 billion.
In March SoftBank also announced its purchase of chip startup Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion.
But analysts doubt how much these planned investments in artificial intelligence will benefit its bottom line as these projects are yet to demonstrate tangible successes and competition is fierce.
"SoftBank has paid a steep price for ChatGPT perhaps without fully understanding how these increasing number of AI chatbots can coexist and make money," said Amir Anvarzadeh, Japan equity strategist at Asymmetric Investors.
Alongside, recent market uncertainty has thrown the initial public offering market into retreat, which may further weigh on valuations in SoftBank's portfolio of unlisted companies.
Since the beginning of April SoftBank holdings Klarna - a Swedish fintech firm - and Oyo - an Indian hotel chain - both delayed their listings following the announcement of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.
However payments firm Paypay is currently preparing for an IPO, a subsidiary of SoftBank announced at its earnings results last week.

Golf Green man loses 1.4 crore to online share-trading fraud

Kolkata: A 57-year-old Golf Green resident lost Rs 1.4 crore in nine transactions over a period of three weeks in an online share-trading scam before he realised he was being duped and lodged a police complaint. Cops have started a probe and have been able to block Rs 9 lakh in one of several hundred accounts they were tracking. They are trying to return the amount to the victim, cops said on Tuesday. According to the complaint, a former top management official with a media firm, who took early retirement three years ago and is currently working as an independent business consultant, came across an advertisement on Facebook in July that promoted opportunities for high returns through share trading. After responding to the advertisement, he was added to a WhatsApp group named after a popular nationalised bank. "In the group, members were given instructions to buy and sell shares at specific times. The group had names and photos of real-life top officials whose portfolios matched the details shared by the administrators. I ran a fair amount of research before I started investing," the man told TOI. On July 29, the complainant said, the group administrators informed members about an upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO) of a real estate company that would be offered at a discount. Believing the claim, he invested approximately Rs 1.4 crore in different transactions between July 21 and Aug 6. The IPO was listed on the National Stock Exchange. However, the complainant alleged that his money was blocked in the process and he was unable to sell the shares or recover the amount. "The app still shows I have an earning of over Rs 4 crore. But they didn't allow me to withdraw it and asked me for more money as transaction fees — 30% of the total amount," he said. The complainant said that on realising the fraud, he tried to reach out to other group members, only to realise many of them were fake profiles planted by the fraudsters. Cops said they have located one of the administrators in western Mumbai and also came across a man in Kolkata in whose account a portion of the cheated money had landed. None, however, has been arrested yet. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Japan's defence minister discusses military cooperation, drones on Turkey visit

Ahead of the visit, a diplomatic source in Ankara said the two countries' defence ministers would 'discuss ways to expand cooperation on defence equipment and technology and exchange views on regional developments'. They also aim to increase contacts between the Turkish Armed Forces and Japan's Self-Defense Forces at unit level, the source said. Gen Nakatani is the first Japanese defence minister to make an official trip to Turkey, a NATO member country that is keen to expand economic and other ties beyond Europe and the Middle East. Turkey and Japan are both U.S. allies. ANKARA (Reuters) -Japan's defence minister discussed defence industry cooperation and possible purchases of Turkish-made drones during a visit to Ankara on Tuesday, as Tokyo expands the role of unmanned systems in its armed forces. Nakatani will also visit Istanbul on Wednesday and tour defence companies and facilities, including Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS), navy shipyards and drone-maker Baykar, a Turkish Defence Ministry official said. 'Defence industry cooperation will be on the agenda…' the official said. 'They will hold inspections regarding drones, but an agreement is not expected. It is too early for an agreement.' Turkey-backed firms have supplied drones to several countries, including Ukraine, while Japan is preparing to expand the use of unmanned aerial vehicles across its ground, air and naval forces. Japan is considering Turkish drones among potential options as part of this effort, the diplomatic source said. Defence Minister Yasar Guler said after his meeting with Nakatani that Turkey wanted to increase defence industry and military cooperation with Japan, his office said in a readout. Turkey and Japan have both condemned Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, though Ankara has maintained cordial relations with Moscow and has not joined Western economic sanctions against it. Nakatani's visit to Turkey is part of a regional tour from August 17–22 that also includes stops in Djibouti and Jordan.
