Wood homers and drives in 4 as the Nationals beat the Padres
SAN DIEGO (AP) — James Wood had a three-run homer among his three hits, drove in four and scored three times for the Washington Nationals, who beat the San Diego Padres 10-6 on Monday night.
Josh Bell also homered and finished with three RBIs. CJ Abrams had three hits and scored three times, twice on hits by Wood.
Wood, Abrams and Bell were involved in the blockbuster trade that sent Juan Soto from Washington to the Padres on Aug. 2, 2022. Bell came over with Soto while Abrams and Wood were among the six players the Padres sent to Washington. Abrams was a rookie and Wood a prospect. The Padres traded Soto to the New York Yankees in December 2023.
This was Wood's first game at Petco Park.
Wood broke open the game with a three-run shot off the right-field foul pole against Yuki Matsui in the eighth inning. Abrams and Daylen Lile were aboard for Wood's 22nd homer.
Bell's 10th homer sailed into the second deck in left in the ninth.
Abrams reached on a two-base throwing error by starter Stephen Kolek (3-3) leading off the fourth and scored on Wood's single. Luis García Jr. doubled, Nathaniel Lowe hit an RBI single, Bell hit a sacrifice fly and Brady House added an RBI single.
Washington added two runs in the fifth with five straight one-out singles. Abrams' hit chased Kolek, and García and Bell hit RBI singles off Wandy Peralta.
Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 435-foot, three-run homer in the ninth for the Padres. Manny Machado homered leading off the fourth and Jake Cronenworth connected leading off the seventh. It was Machado's 13th overall and seventh in June. It was Cronenworth's sixth and Tatis' 15th.
Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (5-8) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.
Key moment
Wood's big night no doubt had Padres fans wondering what would have been if he hadn't been involved in the Soto trade.
Key stat
Machado has 1,990 career hits and 355 homers. He can become the 12th player to reach 350 homers and 2,000 hits at age 32 or younger.
Up next
Nationals RHP Trevor Williams (3-8, 5.54 ERA), a San Diego native, and Padres RHP Ryan Bergert (1-0, 1.88) are scheduled to start Tuesday night.

Stunning Tommy Fleetwood stat makes Travelers loss even worse
The post Stunning Tommy Fleetwood stat makes Travelers loss even worse appeared first on ClutchPoints. Tommy Fleetwood stepped onto the 18th tee at the Travelers Championship with a one-shot lead over Keegan Bradley. With no wins in his 158 PGA Tour starts entering the week, it looked like the Englishman was going to get the monkey off his back. But a phenomenal shot from Bradley and a brutal three-putt from Fleetwood changed everything. After his Travelers loss, Fleetwood made some brutal history. Advertisement 'Tommy Fleetwood: 42nd top-10 finish on PGA Tour; most by any player without a win last 40 years,' Justin Ray of the TwentyFirst Group posted on social media. Fleetwood changed his club before hitting his approach on the 18th hole. That classic sign of overthinking was all Bradley needed to see to pounce on his competitor. The Ryder Cup captain stuck his approach to less than six feet and put all of the pressure on Fleetwood. His first putt was just outside of Bradley's approach, giving his competitor a perfect read. When Fleetwood missed the second putt, Bradley kicked the door down. From a three-shot lead to losing in regulation, it was over for Fleetwood. In his long PGA Tour career, Fleetwood has lost in playoffs, blown leads early in rounds, and now suffered from a brutal 72nd hole collapse. When speaking with the media afterward, he explained his feelings after the loss. 'I'm upset now, I'm angry,' Fleetwood said, per the PGA Tour's social media page. 'When it calms down, look at the things I did well and look at the things I can learn from…[I] felt like I did a lot of good things, but there are things I can definitely do better and have to do better.' Advertisement Just last week, Fleetwood missed the cut at the US Open. While this is a marked improvement from that tough result, he does not get that elusive win on American soil. Bradley, meanwhile, picks up his second Travelers win in three years. Blue Jays' Daulton Varsho leaves game with concerning injury
The post Blue Jays' Daulton Varsho leaves game with concerning injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Toronto Blue Jays used a three-game winning streak to make their way into second place in the American League East. Unfortunately, John Schneider's job just got even harder with another injury. Veteran outfielder Daulton Varsho exited Saturday's game against the Athletics in the third inning after leaving while holding his left leg. Myles Straw took his spot in center field. Advertisement Varsho was caught stretching between second and third after hitting a double, but dropped between the bases. He came up holding his left leg and appeared to be in 'serious pain', according to reporter Keegan Matheson. Schneider turned to Straw to fill the hole in the field after Varsho went out, but fans are concerned. Varsho made his 2025 debut in late April and quickly settled into the Blue Jays offense. After just 93 at-bats, Varsho is tied for the team-lead in home runs with eight. George Springer hit two solo shots on Saturday to join him and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the top of Toronto's stat sheet. The one silver lining to Varsho's injury is that it is not in the same area as the one that delayed his start to the season. The 28-year-old was on Schneider's injured list with a shoulder injury he suffered in 2024. Varsho made his impact felt immediately, making what might end up being the best catch of Toronto's season. However, Varsho's new injury against the Athletics could hold him out for another extended stretch. If it is a hamstring injury, the six-year veteran could be out for a month. Advertisement His exit comes at a bad time for Schneider's team. The Blue Jays are in second place in the division, but the Tampa Bay Rays are right next to them in the standings. At this point in their season, every game matters. Toronto will try to win their fourth straight by beating the Athletics. However, fans will hold their breaths until they get an update on Varsho's health.
