Change in Manipur admin inevitable, popular govt should be formed: Assembly speaker
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh on Thursday (June 19, 2025) said a change in the administration in the state, which is currently under the President's rule, is inevitable.
He also said a popular government should be formed in Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic violence since May 2023.
"I heard that groups are being constituted for the formation of a government. I also heard someone from Delhi will be deputed for the government formation. However, I am not involved in anything as I am in the assembly." The Speaker also said he believes that legislators will continue to work as per the wishes of the people.
"A definite change will certainly come as the duration of the President's rule has a specific time frame. A popular government should be formed," the Yaiskul constituency MLA said.
The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in strife-torn Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in Parliament confirmed the imposition of the President's rule in April.
The President's rule can be extended for a further period of six months at a time by approval of both Houses of Parliament by a simple majority. The President's rule cannot be extended beyond a period of three years in total.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.

NEW DELHI: Officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) held a meeting with insurgent Kuki-Zo groups and persuaded them to relocate and shut down seven designated camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement that are located near Meitei-dominated areas, sources said. They added that the MHA officials also stressed the recovery of looted weapons and the reopening of National Highways. He, however, clarified that there was no discussion on the extension of the SoO agreement, as the talks primarily focused on revising the ground rules, which is seen as a more immediate priority.

No neglect, maybe communication gap: Congress after Tharoor says he wasn't invited for Nilambur bypoll campaign
After Congress Working Committee Member Shashi Tharoor said he was not invited to campaign for the party ahead of the Nilambur byelection, the Congress's state leadership said there was no attempt to 'neglect or avoid' him, but conceded that there may have been 'a communication gap'. Tharoor said Thursday that he had some 'differences of opinion' with some in the Congress leadership. The tensions had come to light after he was chosen by the Centre to lead one of the Indian overseas delegations deputed to explain Operation Sindoor — the Indian armed forces' strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK. On Thursday, Tharoor said, 'If the government demands, I am always ready to render my services to the country… I had proudly done my duty as an Indian citizen.' On his relationship with the Congress leadership, he said, 'I have differences of opinion with some in the Congress leadership. You know what I am talking about, as some of those issues are there in the public domain and have been reported by you (the media).' 'I had seen that they (Congress) had some misunderstandings. When I was busy with the visits abroad, they engaged in arguments without understanding what I had said,' he said. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor said he had no plans to join the BJP. 'Let the Congress reveal their thoughts about me,' he said. Referring to his visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after returning from abroad, Tharoor said it was to discuss the delegation's visit to various countries. 'No domestic politics were discussed'. Regarding his absence from campaigning for the party ahead of the bypoll for the Nilambur Assembly constituency, Tharoor said he was not invited. 'I was not invited. When I came back after 16 days of visits, there was no message,' he said, adding, 'I do not go where I am not invited.' Congress state vice-president A P Anil Kumar said Tharoor was among the party's list of star campaigners. 'He was not here in Kerala. There was no attempt to neglect or avoid him. There might be a communication gap,' Kumar said. With the byelection seen as being critical for the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections next year, several senior party leaders said Tharoor should have shown restraint when polling was going on. 'The issue can be opened after the byelection. Let the people be allowed to vote for Congress. We were not invited for the campaign, but that was our responsibility,' said senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. Congress state president Sunny Joseph said the party had not given any duty to Working Committee members in the byelection. 'There is no practice of inviting any leader. Everybody knows Tharoor was busy. We know his style. The charge of campaigning in panchayats was given to KPCC leaders, MLAs and MPs,' he said.

Centre to call Telangana, Andhra CMs' meet on Godavari-Banakacherla project: Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil
HYDERABAD: Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil assured a Telangana delegation led by CM A Revanth Reddy that a meeting of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Chief Ministers would soon be held to discuss the proposed Godavari-Banakacherla project. The Union Minister assured that justice would be done to Telangana irrigation projects. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, called on CR Patil in Delhi on Thursday and had a one-hour detailed discussion over the AP's G-B project. Speaking to reporters later, Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the State government would also take a legal recourse against the AP's project, if necessary. Uttam Kumar contended that the Centre was according permissions only to AP projects, whereas several projects of Telangana were pending. He sought funds from the Centre for Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation and other projects of Telangana.
