Shubman Gill had a poor record with the bat in England ahead of his maiden assignment as India Test captain. The 25-year-old, however, would thrive under the burden of captaincy in the five-Test series, breaking multiple records while amassing 754 runs and leading his side to a 2-2 series draw. read more

Shubman Gill did not have the best of numbers in England ahead of his first assignment as India Test captain – the five-match series against Ben Stokes' side that concluded on Monday . Gill had scored 88 runs at an average under 15 in three Test appearances, leading to serious doubts over his ability to deliver with the bat under the added pressure of captaincy in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Gill didn't just deliver as a batter against England while captaining India to a 2-2 draw – the second consecutive time a five-match series between these two teams concluded with this scoreline. He ended up smashing multiple records en route to finishing with a staggering 754 runs at an average of 75.40 , collecting four centuries along the way including a career-best 269 in the second Test at Edgbaston.

GT assistant coach reveals Gill's preparation for England trip
Naeem Amin, the London-based assistant coach of the Gujarat Titans franchise that Gill leads in the Indian Premier League, revealed that the 25-year-old had one eye on the crucial tour of England during the 18th IPL season that preceded it, going to the extent of practising with shiny new red balls in the nets.
'And the bit that you will find interesting was him keen to practice just against a new ball. As soon as the new ball would become a little bit old, he'd change it for another new ball,' Amin told The Indian Express.
Amin also credited Gill's desire to learn from the best as a key factor behind his success, citing the example of him picking Kane Williamson's brain during the former New Zealand captain and batting icon's two-season stint with the franchise.
'His appetite always puts cricket first, and in that aspect, he is second to none. When Kane Williamson (former New Zealand captain and world's leading modern-day batsman) was in our team (GT), he was asking him about his thoughts all the time. 'How would you go about this or that? Why are you doing this drill? How does it benefit you?' Amin added.
Thanks to the work he put in ahead of the tour, Gill ended up breaking a couple of Sunil Gavaskar's records – the most runs in a Test series by an Indian captain as well as the most runs in a match in the Test format.
And it was his red-hot run during the series, combined with the heroics of other individuals such as senior pacer Mohammed Siraj and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, that nearly helped India win a Test series on English soil for the first time in 18 years.

‘I would have convinced Mukesh Ambani for Jasprit Bumrah…' - Ex-cricketer ignites fresh debate on India pacer's workload

Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar recently opined that he would have convinced Mumbai Indians owner Mukesh Ambani to rest Jasprit Bumrah in the previous season of Indian Premier League (IPL) so that the India pacer would have been fresh for all five Tests against England. The Indians drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. Prior to the Test series against England, Bumrah stated that he would be playing only three games due to his workload management. The 31-year-old kept his words and played in Leeds, Lord's and the Manchester, taking 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. However, Bumrah faced severe backlash on social media for not playing all the games. Ironically, in the games Bumrah didn't play, India won the games in at Edgbaston and at the Oval. Vengsarkar wished Bumrah was available for all the Test matches. 'It was a series for the ages and I wish Bumrah was available for almost all the Tests. We could have won the series if that was the case,' Vengsarkar was quoted as saying to TOI. "You can't blame Bumrah for missing matches at times. We must remember that Bumrah has undergone a back surgery. "His back is vulnerable and we must be cautious with him. He has given his all whenever he has played for India. I hope he returns for India after adequate rest and when fully fit. If I was the India chief selector, I would have convinced Mukesh Ambani (Mumbai Indians owner) and Bumrah that it was important for Bumrah to miss the IPL for the England series, or play a lesser number of matches in the IPL,' added Vengsarkar, who was a part of India's World Cup-winning squad in 1983. Vengsarkar's cautious approach for Bumrah came after the India pacer injured his back during the fifth Test against Australia earlier this year. The injury sidelined Bumrah for almost three months, thereby forcing the premier pacer to miss the white-ball series against England, ICC Champions Trophy and the first four matches for Mumbai Indians. In IPL 2025, Bumrah played 12 games and picked up 18 wickets before the five-time champions were knocked out in the second qualifier. In England, Bumrah bowled a total of 119.4 overs.

India in 'continuous dialogue' phase with IOC on 2036 bid: Sports Ministry

India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics is in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the International Olympic Committee's Future Host Commission, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 11, 2025). In response to a query from Aam Aadmi Party's MP from Sangrur, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Mr. Mandaviya said the entire bidding process is being handled by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). "IOA has submitted a letter of intent to IOC. The bid is now in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the Future Host Commission of IOC," the Minister stated in the lower house. The Minister, however, did not respond to Mr. Hayer's specific query of whether India is bidding to host the Olympics across multiple venues. Mr. Hayer asked if the proposed plan includes Hockey in Bhubaneswar, Rowing in Bhopal, Canoeing/Kayaking in Pune and Cricket in Mumbai. "Bidding to host the Olympic Games in India is the responsibility of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and allotment of hosting rights for the Olympics is done by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through a detailed host selection process," Mr. Mandaviya stated. Although a host city has not been proposed by India officially, the Gujarat government has been at the forefront and its Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi was part of an Indian delegation that visited IOC headquarters in Lausanne to discuss the bid last month. The 'Continuous Dialogue' phase involves a feasibility assessment by the IOC of the interested party's preparedness. However, as of now, the host selection process has been "paused" by new IOC President Kirsty Coventry. Ms. Coventry, an Olympic gold-winning former swimmer who is the first woman and the first African President of the IOC, said the consensus among the members, during her maiden Executive Board meeting in June, was to reassess the process. Earlier, a decision on India's bid was expected next year. India is also facing competition from the likes of Qatar and Turkey, who are also in the 2036 race. "There was an overwhelming support from the IOC members for a pause to be done and a review of the future host election process and we will be setting up a working group to look into this," the 41-year-old Ms. Coventry had said in July. Mr. Coventry said the executive board members felt that the experience of already decided future hosts -- Los Angles (2028 Summer Games), Brisbane (2032 Summer Games), French Alps (2030 Winter Games) -- need to be studied before proceeding on future proposals. India's poor record in doping is an issue for the IOC, which has sought corrective measures by the IOA. The IOA has set up a panel to address doping in Indian sports after being rebuked by the IOC. Mandaviya addresses state of Indian football Mr. Mandaviya also faced a question on the pitiable state of Indian football. While the national men's team has been hurtling from one setback to another, domestic football is also in doldrums after the top-tier Indian Super League was placed on hold due to technical issues. Congress' Adoor Prakash, who represents the Attingal constituency in Kerala, asked whether the Government "noted the declining situation of Indian football" and that the team has slipped to the lowest FIFA ranking in the last nine years. He also sought a lowdown on the measures being undertaken to revive the sport. The Minister placed the onus on the All India Football Federation and blamed the poor rankings on the "dynamic" of the process to determine them. "Rankings of football teams are dynamic and influenced by match results, strength of opposition, and frequency of matches. "The Sports Authority of India (SAI), an autonomous body under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, regularly engages with the AIFF to review the performance and overall development of the sport and provides its advice accordingly," he stated. "At present, a total of 500 athletes are being trained in football discipline," he added.

Madras High Court orders commencement of trial

The Madras High Court on Monday (August 11, 2025) ordered the commencement of trial in a 10-year-old defamation suit filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni seeking ₹100 crore in damages from Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network for having dragged his name in to the IPL betting scam. Justice C.V. Karthikeyan also appointed an advocate commissioner to record the evidence of Mr. Dhoni on mutually convenient premises, to all the parties involved and their counsel, in Chennai. The advocate commissioner was appointed as Mr. Dhoni's personal appearance at the High Court, for the examination in chief as well as cross-examination by the defendants, might lead to chaos due to him being a celebrity. The orders were passed after senior counsel P.R. Raman submitted an affidavit sworn by Mr. Dhoni expressing his intent to proceed with the trial in the defamation suit pending since 2014. The cricketer said that he would be available for examination as well as cross-examination between October 20, 2025, and December 10, 2025, and that the venue and specific dates could be fixed on the basis of mutual convenience. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,' the affidavit read. When Mr. Raman, assisted by advocate Sandesh Saravanan, requested the court to consider appointing a retired district judge as an advocate commissioner for recording evidence, Justice Karthikeyan said that he would pick a name from a list maintained by the High Court. He also stated that the defamation suit would be listed for hearing before the court after the completion of recording of evidence in full. The trial in the suit had got delayed for over 10 years because of multiple applications taken out by the parties seeking one relief or another. In December 2023, a Division Bench of Justices S.S. Sundar (since retired) and Sunder Mohan had convicted the retired IPS officer of criminal contempt of court and sentenced him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court stayed the punishment in 2024. Mr. Dhoni had filed the contempt plea against the retired IPS officer for having made contumacious remarks against the Supreme Court as well as the High Court while defending the defamation suit. In July 2022, the then Advocate General R. Shunmugasundaram had granted permission to the cricketer to proceed with the contempt plea, after being satisfied that the remarks made by Mr. Kumar, in his written statement to the suit, amounted to scandalising court proceedings.
