David Harbour Addresses Black Widow Character Noticeably Missing From Thunderbolts*, And It's A More Optimistic Answer Than I Expected

The upcoming Marvel movie Thunderbolts* is in many ways a direct follow-up to 2021's Black Widow. Three of the movie's major characters, Yelena, Red Guardian and Taskmaster, debuted in that film, and this is the first time we've seen the latter two since then. It is, of course, not surprising that Scarlett Johansson's Natasha doesn't appear, but considering the rest of Black Widow's 'family' is here, it makes one wonder what happened to Melina.
Rachael Weisz joined the Black Widow cast as Melina, a Red Room operative who also played the role of mother to Natasha and Yelena during their days undercover. At the end of Black Widow, the family comes together, but Melina is nowhere to be found in Thunderbolts*. Speaking with THR, David Harbour is surprisingly open that he doesn't know where Melina is, but he absolutely wants to see her back, and has even been talking to Marvel about making that happen. He said…
No, [we don't]. I've talked to [Marvel] people about Melina, and I think there's still very much potential for Melina.
While Harbour's Alexei and Weisz's Melina were only playing an undercover husband and wife in Black Widow, the movie reveals that there was real affection between the pair, and there's even a Black Widow deleted scene (viewable with a Disney+ subscription) where the two kiss at the end of the movie. But Red Guardian is very clearly a bachelor during Thunderbolts*.
While Yelena and Red Guardian are not particularly close in Thunderbolts*, they have remained in touch. It's unclear if the same is true with Melina. It could be that she is simply elsewhere during the events of the film, or there could be something else going on.
The fact that Melina isn't anywhere in Thunderbolts* could be an indication that her story is simply seen as over, and the MCU will move on without her, as it has with so many other characters over the years. However, David Harbour thinks there's a real chance we could see Melina again, and he thinks it would certainly make for some real drama for his character. He continued…
But I do think that there's potential for Melina's reemergence in some kind of interesting way, and I would love to have her back in Alexei's life. She would add such an interesting complexity.
We know that David Harbour and the rest of the Thunderbolts* cast will be joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, and as long as Red Guardian and Yelena are a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the door is likely open for a return for Melina. Florence Pugh was in the same interview with Harbour, and it seems clear that both of them would love to see Rachel Weisz return. Maybe it really could happen.

Dakota Johnson And Pedro Pascal Weigh In On Why The Rom-Com Genre Isn't ‘Silly', And I Couldn't Agree With Them More
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The rom-com genre is alive and well, as several excellent titles have hit theaters or streaming in recent years. One of the newest additions to the genre is Celine Song's Materialists, which opens in June. The film sees Dakota Johnson play a matchmaker who's torn between a wealthy man (played by Pedro Pascal) and her ex (played by Chris Evans), who's trying to make ends meet. Ahead of their 2025 movie release, Johnson and Pascal argued as to why the rom-com genre isn't "silly," and I totally agree with their thoughts. When the three aforementioned stars of Materialists were interviewed by Fandango, they were told that Celine Song wanted to approach the rom-com genre seriously. The filmmaker felt that previous films of the genre were treated as 'fluff.' This led Dakota Johnson to share that she never felt rom-coms were 'silly,' and she noted just how relatable they can be: It's not a silly genre, and I think that the term romantic comedy or rom-com has been made less important or less serious, but it's for everyone. Everyone can relate to wanting love or being loved or losing love or dreaming or lacking, whatever it is. And it just makes you feel nice. Dakota Johnson's response is spot on. I'm probably not the only one who remembers when people would call rom-coms 'chick flicks,' which I always found demeaning. Like the Fifty Shades of Grey actress said, there are many people who can relate to the idea of finding love and losing it or dreaming about love. Concepts like that shouldn't be seen as 'silly.' If anything, these movies tell very human stories that resonate with the masses. Celine Song's directorial debut, Past Lives, which is about unrequited love, shows the messiness that can result when two people who were together at one point in their lives find themselves on different paths years later. Despite having moved on, the two main characters still asked themselves, 'What if?' Pedro Pascal perfectly discussed the 'high-stakes' that can come with love and the importance of portraying that on the big screen: And the stakes are really high. Love is really [a] high-stakes game. So I love that played out in a movie, especially if its visual authorship is under someone like Celine Song, and that's something that really, really deserves to be seen on the big screen. More on Dakota Johnson I Love A Good Chain Mail Look On The Red Carpet, And Dakota Johnson Just Went So Glam With It I couldn't agree with this more. The trailer for Materialists may give the impression that the upcoming movie is a standard rom-com. However, I have a feeling that under Celine Song's direction, it'll be so much more than that. Considering Song's past experience as a matchmaker, she can speak to the subject matter and, as a smart screenwriter, I'll think she'll avoid typical genre conventions. Maybe this upcoming A24 movie won't be about the importance of who the protagonist ends up choosing but about listening to her own values in a material world compared to what's societally 'perfect.' The rom-com genre doesn't get credit where it's due in my humble opinion. While films like Silver Linings Playbook and Crazy Rich Asians have received praise in recent years, it feels as though some people still look down on those kinds of films. As for the exact reasoning for that, it's hard to say. In 2023, though, Anyone but You struck box office gold, with an over $200 million global haul. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led film didn't fare well with critics, but it did seem to indicate that general audiences have a hunger for rom-coms. Anyone who's on the fence about the value of romantic comedies should really consider Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal's sentiments. Yes, rom-coms can be silly and corny, but they're also capable of portraying real-life experiences and conveying deep themes. That's what I'm hoping to see from Materialists when it opens in theaters on June 13th.

'Incredibly entertaining' Michael B. Jordan movie now available to watch at home — it's my favorite movie of the year so far
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I hope most of you took advantage of seeing Sinners on the big screen — and in IMAX and/or 70mm if possible — as that experience is truly what helped make the Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler movie the best movie of the year so far in my book. But if you haven't been able to see the movie in theaters, well, things have gotten a bit easier for you, as you can now watch Sinners at home via digital on-demand platforms. As of Tuesday, June 3, you can buy or rent Sinners through Prime Video and other digital on-demand platforms. Sinners is still playing in movie theaters if you want to try and catch it on the big screen, but admittedly, watching Sinners at home makes it easier to catch up with the movie. Sinners takes place in the Mississippi Delta of the 1930s, where twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Jordan) return home looking to start their own club. However, on opening night, they have some unannounced visitors who bring unparalleled chaos to the proceedings. In addition to Jordan, Sinners stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller and Jayme Lawson. In my Sinners review, I called the movie 'the first truly great movie of 2025,' and a month and a half later, it is still the best movie I've seen this year. While the movie theater experience was definitely special, the performances, the storytelling and the craftsmanship of Sinners will have the movie play well on whatever size screen (though I'd still recommend watching it on the biggest TV you have). I'm not alone in my praise, as Sinners is 'Certified Fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics' score of 97% and 'Verified Hot' on the platform with an audience score of 96%. It's also pulled in the dough, with it ranking as the third highest-grossing movie at the US box office as of publication and top 10 worldwide. In summation, Sinners has become something of a phenomenon for moviegoers. So anyone who likes to be caught up with the latest movies and hasn't seen Sinners yet — or if you want to watch the movie again — well, now you have multiple options to do so. To be clear though, Sinners is not available as part of a major streaming service at this time, you have to buy the movie or pay a rental fee to watch it at home. We're still waiting on an official streaming release date for Sinners, but as a Warner Bros. movie, we all but know where it is going to be available to stream first — on Max (or perhaps it will be HBO Max again by the time Sinners arrives on the platform). If you need any final convincing, here is the Sinners trailer to give a quick preview:

Hayley Atwell May Not Be Returning as Peggy Carter in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY After All — GeekTyrant
While it was previously reported by the trades that Hayley Atwell would be returning as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars , the Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning star is pushing back on the idea. In a recent interview with Collider, Atwell straight-up denied the news… or at least acted like she'd never heard of it. 'Really? Who… on Reddit? Who's doing that? Who's saying that?' she said, when asked about her reported return. Now, this could be Marvel's usual cloak-and-dagger approach to casting, after all, it wouldn't be the first time actors have dodged direct questions about their MCU involvement. And let's not forget, Marvel Studios reportedly gave actors strict instructions to keep quiet if their name wasn't part of the official Doomsday announcement. So is Atwell just playing along with Marvel's spoiler lockdown, or is this genuinely news to her? It's hard to believe that this is the first time she's heard this since news of her casting initially dropped six months ago. To complicate things further, she's recently been vocal about how much potential Peggy Carter, previously saying: "There are so many things that she could do, there's so much more I feel I can bring to a character because I've developed as time's gone on. 'What's so great about having time behind you and having had a 20-year career so far is the development of skill, and I think there's so much more that Peggy can do. She's very much an underserved character." "When she says 'I know my value and everyone else's opinion doesn't really matter,' it's because she hasn't been given the platform that she knows she deserves and that she's really capable of doing in the world. 'And so I just think there is just so much more that she can do, and I think she speaks to a modern time, so to be able to take her to that next level as Captain Carter would be phenomenal. Especially with all my Mission: Impossible training. I am ready, let's go!" So, let's break this down… Atwell says she's not involved, but she's also talking about how ready she is. And she's publicly enthusiastic about evolving Peggy Carter, especially in her Captain Carter form. Not to mention, the multiverse is open. Could this all be part of Marvel's calculated misdirection? Possibly. Chris Evans has also played coy about a potential return, and we've seen how that plays out before (ahem Andrew Garfield, anyone?). Seriously, though, it's hard to imagine Marvel skipping the opportunity to bring Peggy Carter back for something as massive as Doomsday For now, we'll have to wait and see.
