Bay Area marks India's 79th Independence Day with grand ‘Swades' Parade and cultural festival

The Hindu8 hours ago
The streets of downtown San Jose turned into a vibrant tapestry of color, music, and tradition as the Association of Indo Americans (AIA), in partnership with Bolly 92.3, hosted Swades 2025 to celebrate India's 79th Independence Day. The daylong festivities drew an estimated crowd of over 25,000, making it one of the largest Indian American gatherings in Silicon Valley this year.
A parade of culture and unity
The highlight of the celebration was the grand India Parade, featuring more than 75 floats supported by over 50 community organisations. Each float showcased the cultural richness of India's states — from traditional dances of Gujarat and Haryana to depictions of Ramayana and Kerala's temple arts. Participants dressed in colourful attire brought the streets alive with patriotic songs, drums, and folk performances.
Flag hoisting and dignitaries
The ceremonial flag-hoisting was led by popular Indian actress Ameesha Patel, who served as Grand Marshal, along with Srikanth Bolla, Founder of Earth Cleanse, and Rakesh Adlakha, Deputy Consul General of India in San Francisco. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan hoisted the American flag and praised AIA's efforts, calling the event 'a growing tradition that will only get bigger in the years to come'.
More than 50 elected officials across Silicon Valley, including Mayors, Council members, and State representatives, attended to show solidarity with the Indian American community.
Music, dance, and festivities
The festival continued late into the night with Vijay Bharat, a cultural showcase featuring classical and contemporary dances, a live concert by Jhoom Productions, and patriotic music performed by BATA/AIA karaoke singers. A special Dhol-Tasha performance set a powerful rhythm, drawing crowds into celebration. The evening concluded with fireworks that lit up the San Jose skyline.
Community spirit and recognition
Throughout the day, stalls offered regional delicacies, handicrafts, and games like carrom and chess, while children took part in traditional dance competitions. On stage, community leaders honored volunteers and sponsors whose support made the event possible.
AIA extended thanks to its sponsors, including Sanjiv Gupta CPA (Grand Sponsor), Lavanya Duvvi (Platinum Sponsor), Travelopod, and ICICI Bank, along with media and cultural partners.
Looking ahead
With Swades marking another successful milestone, AIA announced preparations for its next flagship event, the Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka, scheduled for October at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The program will feature a grand Rath Yatra, Mahamangala Aarti, fireworks, and the dramatic burning of a 35-foot effigy of Ravan.
Preserving heritage abroad
For the Bay Area's Indian diaspora, Swades has become more than just a parade. It's a living reminder of their roots, a platform for youth to embrace culture, and a bridge of friendship with the wider American community.

Kaun Banega Crorepati 17's first crorepati Aditya Kumar on his winning moment: Being praised by Amitabh Bachchan is as big as winning Rs 1 crore

Aditya Kumar , who recently created history on Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 17, opened up about his thrilling journey on the hot seat, his first-ever meeting with Amitabh Bachchan , and the emotions that came with clinching the Rs 1 crore question. In an exclusive chat, he reflects on discipline, self-belief, and why his family remains at the heart of his triumph. Excerpts from the interview: What was your very first interaction with Amitabh Bachchan like? Honestly, I was awestruck. His aura is extraordinary, warm, respectful, and reassuring. I thought I'd be nervous, but the way he spoke to me felt like I was talking to someone I'd known for years. What kind of preparation helped you perform well in the game? Discipline, patience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. KBC also proves that knowledge and intelligence (akal) can truly change your life. What do you consider the toughest moment on the show? Definitely the Rs 1 crore question. Even if you know the answer, the weight of that amount can shake your confidence. I had to pause, breathe, and trust myself. That faith is what made the difference. Many people dream of meeting Amitabh Bachchan. How did you experience him beyond the glamour? He has a magnetic presence, but what really touched me was his humility. He asked me about my life, encouraged me when the pressure was high, and praised me for playing with knowledge instead of guesswork. Honestly, that praise felt like a bigger prize than the money itself. Viewers will see me play boldly because, for me, the journey itself is the biggest win. What's the first thing you want to do after winning? I want to share this joy with my unit at UTPS Ukai, Gujarat. My family is also here now. They've been my constant support, and this victory belongs to them as much as it does to me. Adivi Sesh To Lead Pan-India Films Dacoit, G2; Teams Up With Mrunal Thakur, Wamiqa Gabbi

Adivi Sesh will star in two pan-India films, Dacoit with Mrunal Thakur, and G2 - Godachari 2 with Wamiqa Gabbi and Emraan Hashmi. South superstar Adivi Sesh is all set to star in two back-to-back pan-India releases with leading Bollywood stars. The actor, who has carved a niche with his distinctive choices, will headline both a Hindi-language film and a Telugu-Hindi bilingual over the next two years. First in line is Dacoit, a genre-bending action-thriller infused with an intense love story, where Adivi Sesh stars opposite Mrunal Thakur. The film is slated for a grand Christmas 2025 release. Following this, audiences will see the actor reprise his role in G2 – Godachari 2, the highly anticipated sequel to his cult espionage hit Goodachari. The film, co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi in a dynamic role, is scheduled to hit theatres on May 1, 2026. Both projects are being shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, marking a conscious effort by the actor to craft stories that cut across language barriers. Speaking about this exciting new phase, Adivi Sesh said, 'I've always felt that good cinema goes beyond language. With Dacoit and G2, I'm not just chasing scale — I'm chasing soul. While one is an emotional action-thriller driven by love and longing, the other is an expansive spy adventure that builds on the world of Goodachari. Both may belong to different genres and language, but they're united by a sincere effort to tell Indian stories with a global vision and emotional depth." He also said, 'Teaming up with incredible talents like Mrunal and Wamiqa, and working with dreamers who think as big as I do, is both daunting and thrilling. I believe it's time Indian cinema stopped waiting for validation — we're here to tell our stories on our terms, and I'm proud to be part of that movement." About Dacoit and G2 Adivi Sesh will first be seen headlining Dacoit, alongside Mrunal Thakur. The much-anticipated drama also stars Anurag Kashyap in a pivotal role. Directed by Shaneil Deo, the film is produced by Supriya Yarlagadda and Suniel Narang. Backed by Annapurna Studios, Dacoit follows the gripping story of a furious convict who sets out to take revenge on his former lover after being betrayed by her. The film is slated for a theatrical release on December 25. Adivi Sesh returns as Agent Gopi in this next chapter that expands the Goodachari universe into an international arena, continuing its legacy of tight storytelling, intense performances, and grounded action. All set for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026, G2 is gearing up to redefine Indian spy cinema. First Published: August 19, 2025, 18:27 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
