Cherries make it 14 wins from 14 with 4-0 win against Bridgwater

Yahoo24-02-2025
THE Cherries maintained their perfect win record in the National League as they beat Bridgwater United at the AJN Stadium, Keynsham on Sunday.
Gemma McGuinness and Ellie Strippel reached double figures for the season, with Amber Treweek and another McGuinness goal gave Bournemouth a 4-0 win.
Erin Foley in the Cherries net went past 1000 minutes without conceding a goal with yet another clean sheet as Bournemouth completed their 14th win from 14 games in the National League Division One South West.
It was a fast start for Bournemouth as a fantastic strike from Treweek from around 25 yards out found the back of the net after five minutes.
Kenni Thompson went close soon after, Bridgwater keeper Alex Madden saving well to stop her effort ending up in the top corner.
The visitors made it 2-0 in the 12th minute, McGuinness powerfully heading home from a Treweek cross.
There was a long delay as Madden received treatment before being stretchered off the pitch.
Molly Barron-Clark went close twice, seeing one effort go over the bar before hitting the woodwork with a second.
It was 3-0 in first half stoppage time, Strippel finishing emphatically past substitute keeper Connie Pengelly after Thompson's cross.
Eleven minutes after the break, Phoebe Williams was brought down in the box, the Cherries awarded a spot kick.
But Pengelly guessed right to keep Thompson's spot kick out as well as the follow up to keep the deficit at three.
Substitute Alisha Buckingham fired over the bar after she, Charlotte Harris, Ali Hall, Eloise Hall and Erin Bloomfield came on on the hour mark.
Bournemouth extended their advantage to four goals in the 73rd minute, McGuinness completing her brace as she swept the ball home after latching onto a high ball into the box.
And the Cherries defence held firm to keep yet another clean sheet to make it 11 on the trot in the league, as the 4-0 win saw Bournemouth cement their spot at the top of the league.

Liverpool star forces Arne Slot to rethink plans

picked up a hamstring injury against Bournemouth on Friday night. Now we know how long Liverpool will miss him for. Jeremie Frimpong went off at 59 minutes against Bournemouth last Friday as Liverpool eventually won 4-2. Wataru Endo came on at right-back - a surprise substitution. It turned out that Frimpong was actually forced off. Liverpool felt they needed to remove him because of a hamstring injury on what was his Premier League debut for the Reds. According to Lewis Steele, the former Bayer Leverkusen wing-back is "in a race against time to be fit for Newcastle on Monday, after feeling discomfort in his hamstring." It's a massive blow to Liverpool and Frimpong. There was speculation that the youngster would actually start for the club against Palace but an injury ruled him out of the Wembley clash. Bradley has been out since, leaving Liverpool with only Frimpong. Of course, now they lack any right-backs at all. That will be a huge problem for Arne Slot.

Rockies rough up Ohtani at Coors Field and beat Dodgers 8-3

Hunter Goodman had three hits and three RBIs, Tanner Gordon gave up one run in six innings, and the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies roughed up Shohei Ohtani in his first pitching start at Coors Field in an 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Ohtani (0-1) gave up five earned runs in four innings. He allowed nine hits, tying a career high. The reigning National League MVP got hit on the right thigh by a 93-mph line drive off the bat of Colorado's Orlando Arciao in the fourth inning that caused him to limp and grimace in pain. He stayed in the game and finished the inning. He also drew a walk in his at-bat in the fifth, but didn't return to the game when his turn came up in the eighth inning. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game that the line drive hit Ohtani on the thigh and managed to avoid his knee and any on-bone contact. Roberts said he was "confident" Ohtani would be in the lineup on Friday against San Diego after an already scheduled day off Thursday. The Rockies, who are 37-90 and 35 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, have won seven of their last nine. The Dodgers had won 28 of their previous 35 games against Colorado, dating to the 2022 season. Gordon (4-5) earned the win for the Rockies after surrendering 26 earned runs across 15 ⅓ innings in his previous four starts. Jordan Beck had three hits for Colorado, while Tyler Freeman, Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak finished with two hits apiece. Arcia added two RBIs for the Rockies, who finished with 16 hits. Miguel Rojas had two RBIs and Teoscar Hernandez hit his 21st homer for the Dodgers. With a double and a walk, Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 18 games. The loss was the sixth in 10 games for the Dodgers, who entered with a two-game lead over San Diego in the division. A Freeman RBI single to right capped a three-run fourth for the Rockies, extending their lead to 5-0. With two hits and an RBI, Doyle improved his batting average since the All-Star break to .386, the best in the majors in that period. Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (7-2, 3.01 ERA) faces Colorado RHP Chase Dollander (2-9, 6.43) Thursday.

Winger Amine Adli joins Bournemouth from Leverkusen

Winger Amine Adli has joined Bournemouth on a five-year contract after four years at Bayer Leverkusen, both clubs announced on Thursday. Adli helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga and German Cup double unbeaten in 2024. He had a contract until 2028 but has now left for a fee estimated at €30 million ($35 million). The 25-year-old Morocco international played 143 matches for Leverkusen, scoring 23 goals. Bournemouth president of football operations, Tiago Pinto named Adli "a proven winner and someone that will be a real asset to our squad. 'He's someone that has competed at the highest level and his ambition is very much aligned with ours," he said. Adli said: "I was looking at my next move and I felt like Bournemouth was the perfect place for me." Adli is the fifth summer signing for Bournemouth and the latest player to leave Leverkusen, following the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah and Lukas Hradecky.
