Key suspect in overseas job fraud arrested in Chennai

The Hindu02-08-2025
The Job Racket Wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested a 36-year-old man, who was wanted in an overseas job scam, when he was returning from Portugal, at Chennai airport.
The suspect has been identified as Magham Vinay Vardhan, 36, of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. He is suspected to be the mastermind behind a network that defrauded at least 193 job aspirants to the tune of ₹2 crore.
Through 'Saif International', which is defunct now, Vinay and his associates promised jobs in Portugal, Italy, Germany, Poland, and the Cayman Islands without obtaining mandatory registration from the Protector of Emigrants under the Ministry of External Affairs.
In 2023, a person named Padmanaban, 23, of Chengalpattu, lodged a complaint against Saifuddin, 51, for collecting ₹1.25 lakh in exchange for a promised meat cutter job in Poland. Saifuddin neither provided the job nor refunded the amount. He was arrested earlier this year, and investigations revealed Vinay as the key conspirator, the police said.
Vinay had been absconding since 2023 and was detained by immigration officials based on a Look Out Circular (LOC) issued by the CCB.
Meanwhile, the Job Racket Wing of CCB has arrested a couple for allegedly cheating several job aspirants after receiving ₹2 crore from them on the pretext of arranging government jobs, such as Deputy Tahsildars, Assistant Engineers, and other posts.
The couple, namely E.M. Babu alias Hameed Hussain, 40, and Santhya, 36, were arrested by the police based on a complaint from S. Srinivasan, 33. He and his friends had paid money to the couple, but they failed to get the jobs as promised.

Tamil TV actor T. Ravichandran moves Madras HC for anticipatory bail in case linked to threat against Kamal Haasan

Television actor T. Ravichandran has approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail after the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Chennai police booked a case against him for allegedly issuing a death threat to Rajya Sabha member and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan . On Monday, Justice G. Jayachandran heard the plea and directed the government advocate to obtain details from the CCB before posting the case for further hearing on Wednesday. Ravichandran told the court that the remarks he made during a YouTube interview had been "unintentional" and were not intended as a real threat. The controversy began when Haasan, while speaking at the 15th anniversary celebrations of actor Suriya's Agaram Foundation earlier this month, stressed the importance of education as a tool for social transformation. He noted that education was the "only weapon" capable of breaking what he described as the shackles of Sanatana Dharma. Ravichandran, reacting in an interview with a YouTube channel, strongly objected to Haasan's choice of words. He went on to warn that he would slit the MP's throat if such remarks continued. The statement triggered widespread criticism and alarm, leading MNM vice-president and retired IPS officer A.G. Mourya to lodge a formal complaint with the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner on August 10. The complaint was forwarded to the CCB, which registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the actor. In his bail petition, Ravichandran argued that the FIR had been registered without conducting a preliminary inquiry and claimed he was unaware of the specific crime number. He further said he had no actual intention of harming Haasan, adding that he came from a "respectable family background" and was prepared to comply with any conditions the court may impose while considering his request for bail. The High Court will take up the matter again on August 20 after hearing from the police. "Get the latest updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."
