Temporary closure of major roads in Penang for 2025 Pantai Marathon on June 22
The Penang Pantai Hospital in a statement today said the affected roads include the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Bayan Lepas Expressway Viaduct, Batu Maung Expressway Viaduct, and Persiaran Bayan Indah.
The road closures are intended to ensure the safety of participants and facilitate smooth traffic management throughout the event, the statement added.
'Motorists coming from George Town and the Penang Bridge heading to Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul, or Jalan Tun Dr Awang can use Persiaran Bayan Indah – Jalan Aziz Ibrahim as an alternative route, while those from Bukit Jambul heading to George Town are advised to use the route via Sungai Nibong.
'The Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge will remain open throughout the event, with only one lane closed at the Batu Maung area to ease traffic flow.
'The lower lanes of the Bayan Lepas Expressway will be fully open to the public,' the statement said.
The statement added that road users are advised to plan their journey and follow all signage and police instructions during the event.
The Pantai Marathon is an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Part of the funds raised is channelled to the Lions of Georgetown Mutiara Medical Fund to support underprivileged patients in need of medical treatment. — BERNAMA

He said the report, which also considers the use of prohibited substances in vape liquids, including drugs, will be presented to the Cabinet once completed, though no timeline was disclosed. 'It is no longer a question of if we ban, but when we ban. This will be the essence of the report submitted to the Prime Minister and Cabinet,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the ministry's winding-up debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan. Dr Dzulkefly reiterated that the government's direction is towards a ban, particularly after evidence of drug contamination in open-system vapes. He explained that a total ban cannot be enforced immediately as the government has already gazetted the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which regulates the industry. Responding to Bandar Kuching member of parliament Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, who raised concerns over the rise of drug-laced vapes similar to cases in Singapore, Dzulkefly said the Health Ministry is also studying the broader health risks, including e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). He cautioned that an abrupt ban could expose the government to legal challenges from industry players who have legitimate expectations under Act 852. Act 852, which was gazetted on Feb 2, 2024, came into force on Oct 1, 2024, together with the Regulations and Orders made under it. Dzulkefly added that the issue will also be brought to the regional level, with Malaysia proposing that vape control be included in the agenda of the Asean Health Ministers Meeting (AHMM) next year. – Bernama

RCSEd Expands Regional Presence With New International Office In Putrajaya
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), the world's oldest surgical institution, has expanded its regional presence with the opening of a new international office here, strengthening its commitment to Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Its president Rowan Parks said the new facility symbolises the College's long-term investment in the region. 'This office is more than just a space; it is a statement of commitment to our Southeast Asian community and Malaysia has long been a key partner in surgical and dental training and advancement, and this new office allows us to further invest in that partnership,' he said in a statement today. Malaysia is currently facing a shortage of specialists, particularly in surgery, with the Health Ministry estimating the need for at least 13,000 specialists by 2030, double the current number. On that note, RCSEd said the new office aims to support capacity building, professional development and continuous medical education in addressing this gap. Located at the Medical Academies of Malaysia, the purpose-built office was inaugurated today by His Royal Highness Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, the College's Royal Fellow in Malaysia. The ceremony was attended by presidents of medical and dental colleges as well as senior representatives from the surgical and dental fields. Founded in 1505, RCSEd has more than 33,000 members across over 100 countries and is recognised for promoting the highest standards in surgical and dental practice through education, training and examinations. Today's ceremony also witnessed the signing of a Letter of Intent with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), sponsorship support from The Straumann Group, and the conferment of the Malaysia–United Kingdom Travelling Fellowship (MUTF) to Universiti Malaya's Dr Yu Wei.
