Nat Locke: peer pressure made me go hot air ballooning in Turkey and I regret nothing

West Australian3 days ago
A month or so ago, before I went on my Euro adventure, I had a conversation with my parents where I basically promised that I wouldn't go hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, Turkey.
I made this decision off the back of some fairly awful hot air ballooning accidents, including one in Brazil where the balloon caught fire, and another in Turkey where the pilot was killed when the balloon crashed. The recency of these horrendous events seemed to be the universe sending me a sign.
Then a colleague told me about his experience ballooning in Cappadocia. It was a special father-son bonding experience where halfway through, the pilot started yelling that he was going to drop the balloon down close to the ground and someone would have to jump out of the basket.
Now, this is not as easy as it sounds, because the sides of the basket are quite high, so it requires someone with a reasonable degree of flexibility and strength to nail a ladder-less dismount without the balloon actually being on the ground.
As the youngest and fittest passenger, my colleague was deemed the best candidate, and as the balloon got close to the ground, he was ordered to leap from the basket. Meanwhile, the balloon then ascended again, and everyone else got to have a lovely time, while my mate rolled around in the dirt, far from the landing or take-off zone. Perhaps the biggest injustice of all is that he didn't get a refund.
So, after examining all of this evidence, I assured my parents that I would not partake. And yes, I know I'm too old to be making behavioural promises to my parents. Also, when I arrived in Cappadocia, I changed my mind completely, so you might argue that I'm also too old to be rebelling against my parents, but here we are.
So what prompted this complete U-turn? What a very good question.
Essentially, I was a victim of peer group pressure — and yes, I'm too old for that too — in that as soon as one other person in our tour group said she was going to do it, I jumped on board, figuratively and literally. That, and the assurance from our tour guide who ran me through the accreditation requirements for the balloon pilots and before I knew it I was handing my 230 euros over to a man with a briefcase. This was a tiny bit weird, given the currency of Turkey is the lira, but I was prepared to overlook it for the Instagram pics.
The problem with breaking a promise to your parents is that when it actually comes time to do the thing, there's a little nagging voice in your head reminding you that you're tempting fate. The headlines start writing themselves in front of your eyes. You can even see which horrendous photo the news services will pluck from your social media to report your demise.
And these are not the sort of thoughts to be having when you're standing in the pre-dawn darkness watching a bunch of hot air balloons being inflated. Mainly this is because it's not a particularly sophisticated process. The deflated balloons lie limply on the ground with the baskets on their sides, while enormous fans are used to blast air into them. It's noisy too, because a whole bunch of generators are required to power the fans. They can't blast the heat in until the balloons are mostly inflated, so you have a fair bit of time to contemplate your life choices.
Once the balloon is up and ready, though, it's a mad flurry of activity to get everyone loaded in, as we scramble up the stepladder and throw our legs into the basket. There is a lot of yelling and a lot of bursts of heat and before you know it, you're up, up and away, floating across the magnificent valley as the sun peeps over the horizon.
Oh, and 200 other balloons are doing the same thing. How do they not bump into one another? I have no idea, but we didn't come close. There are only four or five balloons launching from any one site, so maybe everyone has their patch? I don't know. All I know is I survived to tell the tale and it was an extraordinary experience. Truly magical.
So, my conscience is mostly clear, and I'll take this as a sign to defy my parents on more occasions.

Want to live like a rock star? Daniel Johns lists retro beachside shack on Airbnb

Loading content... It's one of Newcastle's most recognisable homes. And now, the 1960s beach shack ex-Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, 46, has owned since the mid-1990s, is available to rent on Airbnb. A stay at the two-bedroom, two-bathroom house, which overlooks Merewether Beach, is priced at $450 a night, according to the website. Johns bought the modest property in 1996, shortly after his 17th birthday. For decades, the property remained untouched until a recent makeover of the exterior suggested Johns had big plans for the mid-century gem. Behind the pink and blue colour explosion on the home's facade, the Airbnb listing reveals a striking renovation inside with bold interiors and artistic flair. The listing reads: "Welcome to the Merewether Beach Shack! Built in the 60s, this love shack has been transformed into a rustic, colourful beachside haven. "With all of its old character from the past, it has been styled with unique art and lush velvet couches you can sink into and watch the sunset. "The outside balcony is perfect for sunbaking and having a BBQ grill, bring man's best friend and the fam and watch the world go by. "After the sun has gone down, cosy up by the fireplace and share a meal with friends." Johns' dog, Gia, has also been put to work, appearing in multiple photos to showcase home. The single-level house has arguably the best outlook in Merewether, with floor-to-ceiling windows extending the length of the home to soak up the beach and ocean views. Inside, the living room retains the original stone mantlepiece, a fireplace, a sound system and plush deep blue velvet couches. Upon check-in, the hosts also provide a curated playlist "to get you instantly in holiday mode". A cosy sitting room with a velvet couch positioned in the corner takes in the uninterrupated views via wraparound windows. The new kitchen has peacock blue cabinetry, timber benchtops, a breakfast bar and a large window at the sink that offers more ocean views. The dining space features a designer table, with a trio of arched mirrors and original artworks on the walls. There are two bedrooms, including one with balcony access, expansive ocean views via floow-to-ceiling windows and pop art-inspired wallpaper with images of the likes of music legends including Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, John Lennon and Bob Marley. The retro sage green bathroom combines original details with modern updates. Unique art pieces are placed throughout the home, including a handpainted guitar on the wall in the hallway. This week, the home's official Instagram page posted before and after shots of the renovation which took place over the past seven months. "The last 7 months of decisions, pivots, challenges and excitement has seen the shack get some TLC and bring her back to her original beauty," reads the caption. "A massive shout out to all of the incredible tradies who went above and beyond to figure out the quirks of her wiring and good bones. Loading Instagram Post "If she could talk she would have some incredible stories to tell ... From the secret safe discovered (with nothing in it lol) to the 60s newspaper found under the shag pile carpet and magically uncovering the stunning local to the area tallow wood floorboards brought back to life after a sand and polish - she's an old beauty that will hopefully bring so much enjoyment to today's holiday makers." According the Cotality records, John boguht the house in 1996 for $645,000. At the time, Silverchair was riding high on the back of the success of their debut single, Tomorrow, from the album, Frogstomp, after signing a worldwide three-album recording contract. The trio's estimated gross earnings in 1995 were $6.4 million, according to an article published in the Australian Financial Review in April 1996. The band's legacy continues to shine after three Silverchair songs recently ranked in Triple J's Hottest 100 of Australian Music. Freak charted in 72nd position, Straight Lines came in at number 28 and their breakthrough hit, Tomorrow, placed 17th in the countdown. Listing his home on Airbnb is the latest property move for Johns, who recently demolished his long-time home in Merewether to sub-divide the block and sell off one of the lots. The vacant block on Charlotte Street is listed for sale by expressions of interest with Amanda and Kirk Langlands from Robinson Property.

Incredible sight as snow covers Aussie towns

Vehicles have been bogged, phone service cut, and thousands of residents are expected to be without power for at least another 24 hours after heavy snow blanketed parts of NSW. Parts of the state's Northern Tablelands recorded heavy snowfalls of up to 40cm at the weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said the snow was generated by 'a pool of cold air' that moved in over the towns of Guyra, Armidale, Uralla and Walcha. 'Many locations saw as much as 20 to 40cm of snow, with snow tending to be quite heavy at times during Saturday afternoon,' she said. Homes in Walcha experienced some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. supplied Credit: Supplied 'In Queensland, snow flurries were observed across parts of the Darling Downs … these amounted to very little on the ground.' Uralla's Bolt Inn, a popular local pub, became a shelter for those seeking refuge from the icy conditions on Sunday. 'Due to the snowstorm in Uralla, the Bolt Inn will be closed until further notice as we currently have no power,' a post on the pub's Instagram account read. The Bolt Inn welcomed local residents in to seek refuge from the snow. The Bolt Inn / Instagram Credit: Supplied 'We're sheltering people on floors and chairs throughout the pub, and with many road closures we are staying safe inside.' Others were more keen to get out and make the most of the snow, with footage posted by a Guyra local showing a person skiing on the 'slopes' of the town's golf course. 'A huge thank you to our amazing staff who are here helping to keep everyone safe and warm,' the caption read. NSW SES responded after treacherous conditions left drivers stranded on snow-covered roads NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said emergency services in the New England area were responding to treacherous traffic conditions caused by 'black ice', a term used to describe the formation of slippery, transparent ice over roads. 'We have road crash crews propositioned and ready to respond to any rescues, but we ask the community to please avoid unnecessary travel,' she said. 'If you do need to be on the roads in areas with snow, drive with caution, always use your brakes gently and drive slowly.' The NSW SES reported more than 100 vehicles got stuck on the New England Highway as heavy snow made driving on almost impossible. More than 6000 homes across Walcha, Guyra, Uralla and Armidale remain cut off from the power grid according to Essential Energy. This is down from the peak of 11,000 reported on Sunday morning. An Essential Energy spokesperson said crews were hoping to continue repairs on Monday morning, weather permitting. Road conditions have become hazardous across the New England tablelands. supplied Credit: Supplied 'There is a large amount of reconstruction work required in some areas to rebuild areas of the network that have been damaged during the storms over the weekend,' they said. 'That includes the replacement of power poles. 'Helicopters and additional crews are ready to come in to support as soon as it's safe to do so.' The company also urged residents to stay away from downed power lines. Mobile phone outages have also been widely reported across the area, some of which are expected to last until late on Tuesday. In a message on their live outage tracker, Telstra said the severe weather' had caused widespread outages across the state's north. 'We're working to get everything back online ASAP. Thanks for your patience,' it read.
