‘Enhance safety in scuba diving' call
Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry urged for stronger safety protocols in scuba diving activities following recent incidents involving divers in the State. 'The ocean is a treasure we are blessed with but it also comes with responsibilities, especially when ensuring the safety of those who explore its depths,' said the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai during a Safety Medical Talk organised by the Sabah Dive Squad Club at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Advertisement She said diving requires discipline, knowledge and strict adherence to safety measures. The event, co-organised with UMS and the Borneo Marine Research Institute, brought together 100 representatives from various agencies including the Maritime Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Fire and Rescue Department, and Royal Malaysian Navy. The talk featured presentations on first aid and dive-related medical emergencies by scuba diving medical adviser Lt Col (Dr) Eugene Tan Choon Li, technical diving adviser First Warrant Officer Almudi Eskal and marine conservationist Monica Chin. The Ministry also shared its standard operating procedures for scuba diving activities. Meanwhile, Club president Sim Fui acknowledged that recent diving incidents in Sabah have highlighted the dangers that can occur at any depth, from underwater separations to medical emergencies. Dzulkefly: Health Ministry moving towards total vape ban
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The government is working towards a complete ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad told the Dewan Rakyat today. He said the Ministry of Health is currently studying the matter, which requires a thorough assessment from legal, industry, government revenue, and licensing perspectives before any such policy can be implemented. Dzulkefly said that current regulations only restricted the sale of smoking products at specialty stores while not covering other retail outlets or convenience stores. 'To achieve more comprehensive control, particularly a total ban on the use and sale of electronic cigarettes, a detailed study and further action at the federal level are still required,' he said during Question Time. 'In line with this, the Health Ministry is moving towards a complete ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes or vapes to curb this issue more effectively and comprehensively. 20% of doctors wanting out of East Malaysia must ‘bite the bullet'
Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said transfer requests are being reviewed but all requests could not be accommodated without affecting services in Sabah and Sarawak. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : About 20% of 600 medical officers who have applied to be transferred out from Sabah and Sarawak will have to 'bite the bullet' and stay put for now, says health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad. Dzulkefly said the ministry was reviewing the transfer requests but could ot accommodate every application without affecting health services in East Malaysia, which face a critical shortage of manpower. About 20% would not have their applications approved, he said. 'I know it's not ideal, but I've seen many specialists in Sabah who initially didn't want to go there. Now it's their 10th year and counting,' he told reporters today after launching a book on the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on Malaysia. Dzulkefly said not all placements can rely on arrangements for mutual transfers. On Thursday, the Dewan Rakyat was told there were 650 vacancies for permanent posts in Sarawak, but only seven medical officers have opted to take up these posts. Dzulkefly encouraged doctors, especially those posted as couples, to consider the long-term benefits of serving in East Malaysia. Asked what steps the ministry was taking to solve the high number of transfer requests, the minister said Putrajaya was exploring offering better incentive schemes to retain doctors in Sabah and Sarawak. 'We are trying to see what other incentives can be offered. We know this is an issue we can't completely avoid, but we will do our level best to manage it.' No queue jumping in Rakan KKM Dzulkefly gave an assurance there would be no queue jumping in the Rakan KKM programme, which offers 'premium economy' services at selected public hospitals. Under the programme, specialists can offer paid elective services, with the income reinvested to improve the health service. 'This isn't about jumping queues for emergency cases. It's about giving people an option for elective procedures while retaining top talent,' he said. He said a briefing on the programme would be held as some information on the initiative had been misinterpreted. Two weeks ago, the Malaysian Medical Association had questioned if wealthier patients would get faster access to health services, and urged the ministry to clarify the programme and if it would strain an already overstretched health service.

Two Sabah media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@Hawana

One of the recipients, Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, said he was moved by the kind gesture of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who personally visited his home in Kampung Hungab here today to deliver the contribution. 'I feel appreciated, even though I'm just a photographer. Today is my first day back at work, but I'm only doing light duties as I haven't fully recovered,' said Vicky, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in March. He said the initiative also reflected the Madani government's concern for the welfare of those facing hardship, especially media practitioners nationwide. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Sabah State Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor; and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil. Sabah Media journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is still recovering from surgery for a bowel complication and ruptured appendix in June, expressed his heartfelt thanks after receiving the contribution from Nur-ul Afida at his residence in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, last Tuesday. 'Thank you for taking the time to visit and hand over the contribution. It will definitely help with my treatment expenses during my recovery,' he said. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida said media associations in Sabah could reach out to the secretariat of Tabung Kasih@Hawana, managed by Bernama, to provide information on media practitioners facing health issues or hardships. 'I would like to seek the cooperation of media associations in Sabah to share information with us so that we can assist our fellow media practitioners in need,' she said. Meanwhile, Mariah expressed hope that the SJA could serve as a key platform for coordinating aid to media practitioners in need. 'We will suggest the names of those eligible to receive donations and assist in providing the necessary information,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties.
