Wayne Rooney hits back at Tom Brady: ‘I don't think he really understood football'

Wayne Rooney has bitten back at Tom Brady over comments aired in a recent documentary depicting their short spell working together at Birmingham. Brady, the legendary NFL quarterback and winner of seven Super Bowls, is heard during Built In Birmingham: Brady & The Blues, to question Rooney, when he was manager. 'I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic,' Brady tells his business manager Ben Rawitz. 'I mean, I don't have great instincts on that.' That follows a terse encounter between Rooney, the five-time Premier League winner and Manchester United record goalscorer, and Brady before they attend a meeting with the squad. Rooney was sacked after two wins in 15 matches. Brady was at Blues' training complex in his capacity as a minority owner, and as an adviser to the majority owner, Tom Wagner. 'We're trying to make this a world-class team,' Brady says in the introduction to a series that begins with Blues' relegation from the Championship. Rooney, relaunching his own media career with a BBC-affiliated podcast, has had his say. He said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. But what he does understand is … he's a hard worker – we know that.' Rooney defended his short spell in the second city, saying: 'When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess really. Hence the fact that the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward. You had Tony Mowbray, Gary Rowett after me, who also struggled as well.' Brady is also heard to refer to Birmingham players from the 2023-24 relegation campaign as 'lazy and entitled'. The documentary's brief meeting of the two appears a case of two former sportsmen taking their next career steps and struggling to find the other's wavelength. Rooney said: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Brady, as a serial winner, would have played seasons spanning from September to February. While last season Rooney was briefly the manager at Plymouth, Blues, after a summer of heavy spending, were promoted under Chris Davies as champions, collecting a record 111 points. Rooney was happy to offer credit for that revival. 'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively,' he said. 'He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, athletes of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good, and I think what they have done is got the players out that they needed to get out.' Birmingham were bought out by the Wagner-led consortium Knighthead Capital Management in the summer of 2023 and Brady became a shareholder two months later.

Premier League refs to clamp down on holding in the penalty area

More penalties could be awarded in this season's Premier League with referees instructed to keep a close eye on holding in the box. It is understood that greater emphasis will be placed on holding in the 2025-26 campaign, in particular where officials consider it sustained and impactful. Officials will give consideration to whether there is a clear impact on the opponent's ability to play or challenge for the ball, and where there is a clear, extreme action which impacts an opponent's movement. Referees and VARs will also take note of whether the holding player's focus is on the ball or the opponent. Last season, Nottingham Forest were awarded a penalty against Brighton after Tariq Lamptey was penalised for holding on to Morgan Gibbs-White, and referees will be on the lookout for similar offences in the new campaign. Simulation will be another area of focus, with referees urged to book players who clearly attempt to deceive them. Referees will also immediately signal for doctors or physios to come on when a player appears to have suffered a head injury. The player will leave the field for further assessment and remain on the touchline for a minimum of 30 seconds after the match has restarted. Referee body cameras will be trialled in the Premier League this season, but sources indicated they would not be used until match round three at the earliest. They will provide extra angles for broadcasters to use in their live coverage, but will not be used to replay controversial incidents. As first reported last month, referees will announce the outcome of VAR reviews except for factual offside and onside decisions. The high bar for VAR intervention will be maintained this season, with 83 per cent of game stakeholders surveyed earlier this year – including players, managers, directors and supporters – supporting a continuation of the threshold. There was also strong support for continuing to follow the same interpretation of handball offences, with 78 per cent thinking the level was correct. Referees will not see it as a punishable offence if the arm is in a justifiable position, is supporting the player's body, where a player plays the ball on to their own arm, where there is a clear change of direction when touched by the same player, where the ball is played by a team-mate or where there is close proximity. Handballs will be penalised where there is a deliberate movement of the arm away from the body, there is clear additional arm movement or the arm position makes the body bigger and is unjustifiable. Only nine penalties were awarded for handball in the Premier League last season. This will also be the first Premier League campaign since the introduction of the eight-second rule for goalkeepers holding on to the ball. Referees will start to count down once the goalkeeper is in full control of the ball and is completely unobstructed by any opponent. A corner will be awarded to the other team where goalkeepers exceed the eight-second limit, while any attacking player who pressures or prevents a goalkeeper from releasing the ball during the countdown will be penalised by the awarding of an indirect free-kick.

Why Gianluigi Donnarumma will struggle to get ANY Premier League transfer, despite showing up English clubs in Europe

His wages could scupper a move to another league too NOT FOR KEEPS Why Gianluigi Donnarumma will struggle to get ANY Premier League transfer, despite showing up English clubs in Europe GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA has this habit of playing brilliantly against English clubs. So it might seem a bit weird that even though the Italian goalkeeper is dreaming of a big-money move to the Premier League from PSG, he might end up being left high and dry in the French capital. 11 Gianluigi Donnarumma is keen on a move to the Premier League Credit: Reuters 11 Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are the only club to have held talks over a move Credit: AFP 11 City have already splashed out on James Trafford this summer Credit: PA Play Dream Team now! Donnarumma broke England's hearts in the Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out at Wembley by saving Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka's spot-kicks. In the Champions League last season, he continued his spell over England as he was outstanding against Aston Villa, Arsenal and Liverpool. This was a huge reason why PSG ended up winning the competition for the first time in their history. A player with just 12 months left on his contract, that has not stopped him from being dumped by PSG boss Luis Enrique for new arrival Lucas Chevalier. Donnarumma knows he is now toast at PSG. And he would love to play in England but the problem is that despite his fine reputation, he could still struggle to find a Premier League club. The player's agent, Enzo Raiola said: 'It's true, the Premier League is very intriguing to us. I saw that many of my clients who play in the Premier League think it is the best step, being the most competitive league in the world. 'As of today, I have not received even the slightest hint from Italy that clubs could start negotiations for Gigio in this window. I won't exclude anything for the future, but so far no Italian clubs have stepped forward. 'On a purely financial level, nobody has the means to take a step towards Donnarumma.' Intriguingly, the only English club to express an interest so far are Manchester City although there have not been concrete talks. Watch Ruben Amorim's reaction when asked if Man Utd are signing PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma This is despite the fact that Ederson, Stefan Ortega and the newly returned James Trafford are already at the club. Donnarumma makes some spectacular saves in big moments but equally, he is not great with the ball at his feet which is one reason why PSG manager Enrique has bombed him at PSG. And let's not forget that Donnarumma is not even that good at dealing with crosses. People might say he is the best keeper in the world but he really is not. He is decent, but Alisson at Liverpool and Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois are better. 11 11 Donnarumma helped PSG to the Champions League title last term Credit: AP 11 Liverpool are sorted for goalkeepers with Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili Credit: Getty 11 Man United have Andre Onana who would need to leave first Credit: Getty Maybe if City sell Ederson, Donnarumma might have a chance of playing in England but this looks unlikely. So, elsewhere, what are his other options? Manchester United do not want to sign him, although even if they did, Ruben Amorim would have to move on Andre Onana first. And those huge Donnarumma wages would be a problem. Chelsea are not looking for a keeper. Neither are Arsenal, who are happy with David Raya. Liverpool have Alisson while new keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has arrived from Valencia, having been bought a year ago. Newcastle have signed Aaron Ramsdale to compete with Nick Pope while Spurs are happy with Guglielmo Vicario. So, maybe Donnarumma could take the money and head off to Saudi Arabia but it would not be ideal for Italy that their team captain would be playing in the Middle East ahead of a World Cup. Although he will not sign a fresh deal at PSG, maybe he could still return to the side. This seems unlikely but his replacement, Chavalier, hardly covered himself in glory in the Uefa Super Cup against Spurs in Udine on Wednesday. Donnarumma is only 26 so maybe he will still get that dream move to the Premier League but right now, it looks as though it is unlikely to be this summer. 11 Donnarumma was Italy's penalty shootout hero against England in Euro 2020 Credit: AP 11 Lucas Chevalier has taken Donnarumma's spot at PSG Credit: Getty 11 Chelsea are happy with their stockpile of goalkeepers Credit: Alamy 11 Ruben Amorim may be left with his current options Credit: Getty
