Illinois edge rusher Gabe Jacas shooting up NFL Draft boards

Gabe Jacas discusses what he needs to do in order to further improve his already high NFL Draft stock
The Illinois Fighting Illini, who finished last season ranked #16 in the final AP poll, opened training camp today with sky high expectations. Illinois returns 18/22 starters from a 10-win team that has a host of NFL Draft prospects. Senior EDGE Gabe Jacas has the highest draft stock of anybody on the team.
He is starting to show up regularly in the second round of NFL mock drafts everywhere. At this point, with the season having not even started yet, it's just all speculation. Jacas knows he must put in the work on in order to realize his National Football League aspirations.
The Port St. Lucie, FL native discussed the specific fundamentals that he needs to work on during his final season of college football.
"It's hand placement, it's leverage," he said in an exclusive with RG. "It's staying low, and just that first that get off, that first step, and just being quicker off the ball."
Jacas, who projects perfectly to the next level as a 3-4 Outside Linebacker, wasn't done. He continued listing out specific ways in which he knows he can get better, and thus continue moving up the draft boards:
"doing different moves, doing moves that can help me win (individual matchups) faster. So there are always things I can improve on in my game, and I've been working on those things."
"Just being efficient with my hands, (in the way that I) attack the tackles, just having a move in mind at all times, and, you know being proactive on the field, having that motor."
"A lot of the great pass rushers, they have a good motor, and that's something I would like to add to my game."
Jacas, who was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy (biggest impact, both on and off the field) and Bronko Nagurski (Defensive Player of the Year) preseason watch lists, also added that many of the best pass rushers have a great motor, and that is something he would like to add to his overall game.
The young man pegged by CBS Sports in April as the 20th best overall player in college football, regardless of position, is living in the golden age of EDGEs.
If you're a college football player looking to get drafted, this is a great time to be an edge rusher, or defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid. The NFL currently places a high premium on this position.
Jacas had 13 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and 10 quarterback hurries last season, leading the Illini in all three categories. He is the standout player, and leader of a stellar Illinois defensive front seven that should be among the better units in the Big Ten.
It has been about a quarter century since the last time the Illini had preseason expectations as high as they currently do. Typically, Illinois does not have high preseason expectations, and that's understandable, given how they have not accomplished back to back winning seasons since 2010-2011, and both of those seasons saw a 7-6 finish.
The program has not accomplished consecutive eight-win seasons since 1989-1990, but head coach Bret Bielema has turned things around. A defensive lineman during his playing days at Iowa, Bielema knows what it takes to play stout defense in the Big Ten.
He's also done a great job of developing Illini defenders and sending them to the NFL. Devon Witherspoon (Seattle Seahawks), Sydney Brown (Philadelphia Eagles), Quan Martin and Johnny Newton (Washington Commanders) are a few examples from the past couple years.
Jacas definitely seems next in line.
As midsummer passes and Labor Day weekend draws closer, the number of media opportunities with college football players increases. One of the joys of these late summer media opps is hearing prospects discuss what they need to do in order to reach the league.
It's enjoyable on two levels. First, it really makes you realize that football is just around the corner. Secondly, it's always uplifting to hear someone get fired up when discussing their hopes, dreams, motivations and aspirations.

NFL preseason live updates: Colts reportedly name Daniel Jones as starting QB over Anthony Richardson for 2025

[NFL top storylines | NFL team feeds | NFL camp/preseason live blog] The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly named Daniel Jones as the team's starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson for the 2025 NFL season after winning the job in training camp. That means Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, will head back to the bench ... yet again. His reign in the league has been tumultuous, riddled with injuries that have limited him to just 15 total games in his first two seasons, with mixed results in the limited time he spent on the field. Just last year, Richardson was benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco after briefly exiting the team's Week 8 loss to the Houston Texans, citing fatigue. Richardson holds a 50.6% career completion percentage, averaging just 159.4 passing yards per game with 11 pass TDs and 13 INTs to his name. Unfortunately, those passing stats haven't been enough to overcome the upside he poses on the ground as a runner and as a deep passer. At 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds, Richardson posted a 4.43-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, with a 40.5" vertical; that testing earned him a Relative Athletic Score of 10.00 out of a possible 10.00 — the highest rank among 916 quarterbacks dating back to 1987, per Kent Lee Platte's model. He totaled 635 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground over 15 career starts. The Colts signed Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract in free agency this offseason, which includes a max value of up to $17.7 million when taking incentives into account. The base salary and built-in incentives hinted that the team appeared willing to let Jones compete for the starting role. It's not often that a player is signed as an intended backup and earns that kind of money; the highest average annual salary for an intended backup, as it stands now, is $8 million annually, paid to the Washington Commanders' Marcus Mariota, backing up 2024's Offensive Rookie of the Year, Jayden Daniels, per Over The Cap. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, was released by the New York Giants upon his own request back in November after being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito. He was in the second year of a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the franchise at the time of his release, holding a 24-44-1 record as a starter. Jones has completed 53.1% of passes over the first two games of the preseason for 245 yards, 0 TD and 0 INT. He enters 2025 in as solid a spot as he's seen so far in his career, however, with some depth at receiver he hadn't experienced during his time in New York. Michael Pittman Jr., A.D. Mitchell, Josh Downs, Alec Pierce and do-it-all rookie tight end Tyler Warren highlight just a few of his top targets for this season. NFL top storylines Three-year starting Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. appears to be on his way out, and the Commanders may have demonstrated why Monday night. With Robinson sidelined amid reported trade rumors, Washington ran roughshod over a porous Bengals defense as both teams played their starters early. The Commanders exploded for a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession without throwing a pass. Running back Chris Rodriguez broke free for a 40-yard run to set up quarterback Jayden Daniels for a 14-yard touchdown scramble through and past multiple hapless Bengals defenders. Then came Jacory Croskey-Merritt's time to shine. The seventh-round rookie out of Arizona took the starring role on Washington's second drive with 32 rushing yards as the Commanders needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game. Croskey-Merritt capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run. Browns name Joe Flacco starting quarterback for Week 1: The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Joe Flacco will start Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, a move that has been expected for a while and is now official. That hardly ends the intrigue on the Browns' depth chart, though, with presumptive backup Kenny Pickett having yet to take an in-game snap this preseason due to injury, fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders still battling an oblique injury, and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel having looked solid in his debut over the weekend. With Flacco getting playing time in Saturday's preseason finale, snaps will be even more scarce for the other three QBs on the roster. How will this shake out? Matthew Stafford returns to Rams practice: Breathe a sigh of relief, Los Angeles Rams fans and fantasy players. Matthew Stafford finally returned to practice on Monday after battling an aggravated disc in his back and took part in team drills. Head coach Sean McVay said he thought Stafford did a good job, but opted to play things carefully, deeming Stafford as day-to-day and week-to-week. McVay called it a "very fluid" situation and said while it was "great" that Stafford was able to get back to practice, the team will see how he responds the rest of the day and Tuesday. Browns sign WR Isaiah Bond, gave him lie detector test: The Cleveland Browns reportedly signed wide receiver Isaiah Bond to a three-year, $3 million deal Monday after he was not charged as part of a sexual assault investigation. Bond, 21, was expected to be a mid-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft but went undrafted after being arrested just two weeks before the draft. On Thursday, Bond was "no-billed" by a grand jury in Texas, meaning there was not enough evidence to charge him. As part of that diligence, the team apparently had Bond go through an independent polygraph test, per team general manager Andrew Berry. Washington Commanders Free Agency: Veteran OT George Fant signed

The Washington Commanders brought in several players for tryouts last week, including veteran OT George Fant. The visit went well, and the two sides reportedly stayed in contact. Fant has now reportedly agreed to terms on a free agent deal. Fant(6'5', 315 lbs, 33 yo) has been in the NFL since the Seattle Seahawks signed him as an UDFA after the 2016 NFL draft. He joins an offensive line that continues to upgrade to protect second-year franchise QB Jayden Daniels. Laremy Tunsil is the LT after Washington traded for him, and they also drafted Josh Conerly Jr in the 1st round this year to move him to RT. Fant will get a week to show coaches what he's still got before cutdown day on August 26th at 4 p.m. ET.

Fantasy Football Video: ‘Just call me Bill' — RB1 path being forged for Jacory Croskey-Merritt following Brian Robinson Jr. trade rumors

The Washington Commanders surprised us all by advancing to the NFC Championship Game last season. So, going into this season, we all expected things to be quiet on the news front for the Commanders during camp and preseason. That hasn't been the case. Not only is Terry McLaurin a candidate to be traded if a contract extension isn't met, but now RB Brian Robinson Jr. is being floated in trade reports. Robinson was held out of Washington's preseason game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. All of this is seemingly because of the emergence of the RB referred to only as "Bill." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Analyst Matt Harmon was joined by Faraz Siddiqi of Upper Hand Fantasy on the latest episode of The Yahoo Fantasy Forecast Podcast to discuss the situation in Washington's backfield. Rookie RB Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt has performed so well in camp that it has seemingly opted the offense to phase out Robinson entirely, looking to move on from the back who had 187 carries for 799 yards and four TDs last season. Those numbers aren't anything to write home about and Robinson wasn't really the reason the Commanders offense was so successful last season (it was Jayden Daniels). With the depth at running back with JCM, Austin Ekeler and Chris Rodriguez, the Commanders apparently don't feel the need to keep Robinson. In the Week 2 preseason game, we saw Croskey-Merritt lead the backfield with 11 carries for 46 yards and a TD. Rodriguez also had six carries for 62 yards, including a 40-yard scamper that set up a TD on the team's first drive. Siddiqi also points out that among 857 FBS running backs with 200 or more carries since 2014, Croskey-Merritt ranked in the 95th percentile after contact rate, 98th percentile missed tackle rate and 97th percentile breakaway run rate. While he didn't play much for Power Conference schools, those are impressive marks. The hype surrounding "Bill" has Yahoo analyst Justin Boone moving the back up in his rankings. Only time will tell whether Croskey-Merritt is able to take over the Commanders backfield this season. His ADP on Yahoo is up to 126.5 over the past seven days. We could see that meteoric rise continue as we approach peak fantasy football draft season.
