US applauds Pakistan's backchannel role on Iran
Listen to article
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed appreciation for Pakistan's continued willingness to play a constructive role in mediating conversations with Iran and its commitment to preserving regional stability during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
"The two also discussed prospects for deepening bilateral counterterrorism cooperation, including countering ISIS-K, and the upcoming US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue in Islamabad this August," the State Department said in the readout of the meeting.
"The Secretary underscored the importance of expanding mutually beneficial bilateral trade and exploring prospects for enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals and mining sectors," it added.
In a post on X, Dar described the meeting as "a comprehensive discussion on the full spectrum of bilateral relations," reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to a long-term partnership with the US. He said the talks included a renewed focus on economic, trade, investment, IT/AI, and counterterrorism cooperation.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the United States and Pakistan were "very close" to a trade deal that could come within days, but comments from the US after Dar met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned no timeline.
"I think we are very close to finalising a deal with US. Our teams have been here in Washington, discussing, having virtual meetings and a committee has been tasked by the prime minister to fine-tune now," Dar said in a discussion at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington.
"It's not going to be months, not even weeks, I would say (just) days," he said.
Under US President Donald Trump, Washington has attempted to renegotiate trade agreements with many countries that he threatened with tariffs over what he calls unfair trade relations.
Many economists dispute Trump's characterisation. The US State Department and Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in separate statements after Rubio's meeting with Dar, said the two stressed in their discussion the importance of expanding trade and ties in critical minerals and mining.
A post by Rubio on X after the meeting and the State Department's statement mentioned no timeline for finalising a trade deal.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has underlined the need for a sustainable architecture of peace in South Asia and said the United States as a global power and a partner has a constructive and stabilising role to play.
Talking about ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025, he said the US emerged as the credible arbiter of peace and stability in South Asia.
He thanked US President Trump for facilitating ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
"We are committed to sustaining the ceasefire unlike our neighbour. We believe in peace and we never escalated as the first mover and we only acted in self-defence according to the United Nations charter," he explained.
He said Pakistan's relationship with the United States was enduring, wide ranging and evolving.
"It has proved to be a consequential partnership whenever the two countries converged on global issues. We are encouraged by the upward trajectory in our bilateral partnership since President Trump assumed office."
He said he held a very productive meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the two sides agreed on our shared commitment to deepen and broaden relations between Pakistan and the United States.
"Our nations are coming closer and we have already made progress in relations in the span of six months."
He recalled that in his joint address to the Congress, President Trump recognized Pakistan's vital assistance in battling global terrorism.
He said the world was changing at a rapid pace and old certainties were giving way to the new realities.
Pakistan believed in peace through resilience and responsibility, he stressed adding Pakistan was a youthful nation of 240 million people, fifth largest in the world and a nuclear power.
He said, "We are peace seeking and peace loving nation and stability in South Asia is vital for us and for the world."
Pakistan believed in the paradigm of peace through strength and dialogue to resolve issues, he said adding Pakistan has taken tough decisions to surmount certain challenges to its economy.
"We concluded the successful IMF programme in pursuit of structural and macroeconomic reforms," he apprised.
"Recent improvements in macroeconomic indicators are evident by the improvement in current account balance, declining inflation and rebuilding of foreign exchange reserves," he informed.
He said terrorism remained a challenge for Pakistan and the government was fighting back.
"Democracy in Pakistan is not only functioning but thriving and the government is committed to human development with substantial investments in health, skill development and social protection," he noted.
The DPM said. "In the realm of governance and political reform we remain committed to deepening rule of law, freedom of expression and pluralism, the values we share with the American people."

US-Pakistan landmark deal to enhance growing cooperation: PM Shehbaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed on Thursday the recently concluded trade deal with the United States as landmark, saying that the agreement will enhance the growing cooperation between the two countries. 'I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic US-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night,' the PM wrote on his official social media X. 'This landmark deal will enhance our growing cooperation so as to expand the frontiers of our enduring partnership in days to come.' The PM's statement comes after the US president announced that his administration struck a deal with Pakistan in which Washington would work with Islamabad in developing the South Asian nation's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' Trump wrote on social media. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!' Pakistan faced a potential 29% tariff on exports to the United States under tariffs announced by Washington in April on countries around the world. Tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days so negotiations could take place.

However, late-session buying lifted the benchmark KSE-100 index by nearly 450 points. The index fluctuated between intra-day high of 139,018.88 and low of 137,658.81. It closed with a gain of 447.43 points, or 0.32%, at 138,412.25. Sentiment shifted in the latter half of the session after the SBP maintained its benchmark policy rate. The decision triggered a rally in the banking sector, with notable gains in major names such as United Bank, Habib Bank and MCB Bank. "The market ended on a positive note as banks rallied following the SBP's announcement to keep policy rate unchanged, contrary to market expectations of a reduction of 50 basis points," AKD Securities Director Research Mohammed Awais Ashraf told The Express Tribune. Additionally, Systems Limited surged after acquiring British American Tobacco's SAA services to fuel its future growth. He expected interest rates to drop to single digits, supported by easing inflation and stability in the foreign exchange market due to lower debt repayments in the current year. KTrade Securities, in its market wrap, wrote that stocks saw a mixed session as investors awaited the central bank's policy rate decision. The KSE-100 index fluctuated between intra-day low of 137,659 and high of 139,019, eventually closing up by 447 points at 138,412. Later, the SBP announced that it had kept interest rate unchanged, citing inflationary pressures and trade deficit concerns. Market players also remained focused on a potential Pakistan-US trade deal, which is likely to be finalised soon, it said. Arif Habib Limited (AHL) observed that the KSE-100 rose from support zone to regain the 138k level. Some 41 shares rose while 59 fell with Systems Ltd (+6.9%), United Bank (+2.08%) and Habib Bank (+3.21%) contributing the most to index gains. In corporate news, Engro Fertilisers announced 1HCY25 earnings per share (EPS) of Rs6.34 (+10% year-on-year) and dividend of Rs6.50 per share. Also, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb was in the US to conclude trade talks with final discussions this week, while the SBP held its benchmark rate steady for the second meeting amid inflation and tariff uncertainty, despite expectations of a reduction. JS Global analyst Muhammad Hasan Ather noted that the market experienced volatile trading. It initially rallied on optimism about a potential rate cut, but the SBP held the policy rate unchanged at 11%. This triggered buying interest in bank stocks, however, overall sentiment remained neutral to negative. Ather said that corporate results, coupled with any positive economic developments on the external front, may provide support to the index in the days ahead. Overall trading volumes decreased to 425.8 million shares compared with Tuesday's tally of 606.3 million. Traded value came in at Rs25 billion. Shares of 476 companies were traded. China calls for more engagement with US
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called for more engagement with the United States, and warned against confrontations between the two global powers, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry. Wang made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with a delegation of US businesses that include executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing and Apple, the ministry said. "China is willing to enhance engagement with the US, avoid misjudgment, manage differences, and explore cooperation," Wang was quoted as saying. His remarks came a day after top Chinese and US negotiators wrapped up a latest round of trade talks in Stockholm, with both sides agreeing to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce struck in May. Wang said that China-US relations are affected by global developments and exert a "profound impact" on international dynamics. "China and the US need to establish more channels of communication and consultation, view each other objectively, rationally, and pragmatically, and foster a correct strategic perception," he said, urging both countries to reject "unilateralism and bullying". He encouraged US companies to maintain confidence in the Chinese market, and welcomed them to continue to invest in China, the ministry statement said. A high-level delegation of US executives is visiting China this week and has also met with China's commerce and industry ministers. The trip comes as Beijing and Washington work towards a summit between the two countries' leaders later this year, probably around the time of the APEC forum in South Korea from October 26 to November 1, sources previously told Reuters.
