UP centres to use aeroponics for potato seeds
2
Lucknow: The state govt has established centres of excellence in Kushinagar and Hapur to produce good quality potato seeds, or tubers, using an advanced technology called aeroponics.
Aeroponics is a soil-less farming method where the roots of potato plants remain suspended in the air after breeder seeds sown in seedling trays germinate. The timely spray of nutrients on the roots gives strength to the plants.
"Because soil is the biggest source of contamination, a soil-less medium is being used at these centres," said sources in the horticulture department.
At present, potato seeds are cloned at govt farms from the breeder seeds obtained from the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), headquartered in Shimla with regional centres in several states, including UP.
Potatoes are not only grown for the crop but also for the seeds. However, the clones need to be replaced after five years due to degeneration.
Besides, seed production in potatoes costs 50% of the total cost of production for the crop. "Better quality seeds are needed to reduce the cost of production," said sources. Seeds must be disease-resistant, genetically true to type and high yielding. A plant grown from a good quality seed may produce 50-60 tubers, which can be sown to grow potatoes.
UP is the largest producer of potatoes in the country, producing 240 lakh metric tonnes of potatoes in a year, which accounts for over one-third of the total annual production in the country. It has seven lakh hectares under potato cultivation and may need over 40 quintals of seeds for every hectare of area under potato cultivation. While the new centres are functional, the old technique of producing potato seeds will also continue, said sources.
Agra is the biggest potato-producing district. The potato belt extends from Agra to Kanpur. Around 105 lakh MT of marketable surplus from UP is sent to other states. Potatoes are cultivated in the rabi season, which is a winter cropping season, from Oct-Mar. The sowing is done in Oct-Nov and harvested in Feb-Mar.
There are 2,300 cold storages where the crop is stored and sold in the market.

Shubhanshu Shukla to return to India on August 19, to meet PM Modi
Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is set to return to India on Sunday (August 16, 2025) after his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS) and is eager to share his experiences with friends and colleagues back home as ISRO eyes its maiden human spaceflight in 2027. Mr. Shukla, who has been in the U.S., training for the Axiom-4 mission to ISS for the past year, is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and travel to his hometown Lucknow soon after. He is expected to be back in the capital to participate in the National Space Day celebrations on August 22-23. Mr. Shukla posted on Instagram a smiling photograph of himself sitting in an aeroplane, and said in its caption that he was filled with mixed emotions as he left the U.S. and could not wait to return to India to share his experiences with everyone back home. "As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past one year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family and everyone in the country for the first time post mission. I guess this is what life is -- everything all at once," Mr. Shukla said in the post. "Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you. Goodbyes are hard but we need to keep moving in life. As my commander Peggy Whitson fondly says, 'the only constant in spaceflight is change'. I believe that applies to life as well," he said. Mr. Shukla also added, "I guess at the end of the day -'Yun hi chala chal rahi - jeevan gaadi hai samay pahiya'," recalling the song from the Bollywood movie Swades that was on his playlist just before he embarked on the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS on June 25 from the U.S. Mr. Shukla and his backup astronaut, Prashanth Nair, participated in the Independence Day celebrations at the Indian Consulate in Houston on Friday (August 15, 2025). Addressing the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025) said India was developing its own space station and recalled that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from a space mission. "Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. In the coming days, he is returning to India," Mr. Modi had said. Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on July 15. Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) — Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission.

NEW DELHI: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla , the second Indian to travel to space and the first to visit the International Space Station (ISS), is expected to arrive in India this weekend, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said. Shukla is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his short stay in Delhi before heading to his hometown, Lucknow, to meet his family. He will return to Delhi for the National Space Day celebrations on August 23, the minister added. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission, which lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the ISS on June 26. Alongside astronauts Peggy Whitson (US), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), he conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission. The Dragon spacecraft carrying the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the San Diego coast on July 15, marking the successful completion of the mission. The Axiom-4 mission is seen as a significant milestone for India's human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, which is targeting a launch by 2027. Prime Minister Modi praised Shukla's achievement, saying he has inspired a billion dreams and taken a major step in advancing India's space ambitions.
