Ambulance overturns on slippery road in Melaka, causing 1km jam
A 30-year-old medical assistant was injured in the 10.40am incident. The 40-year-old ambulance driver was unhurt.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Deputy Superintendent II Mohd Hafidzatullah Rashid said the department received a distress call at 10.48am and despatched eight firefighters from the Tangga Batu station.
"Upon arrival about 10 minutes later, the team found a Toyota Hiace ambulance and one injured man.
"Operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Mohamed Azuani Mat Yusof confirmed that the victim was extracted and taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment."
It is understood that the ambulance was on its way to pick up a patient when it overturned at a bend. The road was believed to be wet and slippery following rainfall.

JKM detains 987 destitute in 5 months; highest in KL since 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has 'detained' 987 individuals categorized as 'orang-orang Papa' (destitute persons) as of May 2025, operating under the provisions of the Destitute Persons Act 1977. The figure was revealed by Women, Family and Community Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri during today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. Nancy clarified that the term 'detained' is the legal terminology used in the Act. 'These actions are carried out by JKM on an ad-hoc basis, often triggered by public complaints, or through planned joint operations with other agencies,' she said. Providing a historical context, Nancy stated that a total of 1,987 destitute individuals were recorded in 2024; 2,080 in 2023; 1,280 in 2022; and 1,528 in 2021. Since 2021, Kuala Lumpur has recorded the highest cumulative number of detentions with 1,742 cases, followed by Penang (1,288) and Johor (1,199). Breaking down the numbers by age, 515 individuals were under 18, 5,068 were between 18 and 59 years old, and 2,018 were aged 60 and above. The ages of the remaining individuals were not confirmed. The Destitute Persons Act grants welfare officers the authority to detain individuals for up to 24 hours before they are presented to a Magistrate's Court. Operations are conducted either solely by JKM or in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, including the Health Ministry, Immigration Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), and various local authorities. Responding to a query from Tampin MP Mohd Isam Mohd Isa, Nancy confirmed that the ministry has completed a comprehensive review of the 1977 Act. She indicated that several provisions were found to be outdated and will be replaced by a more practical legislative framework that specifically targets homelessness, begging, and urban poverty. 'We are working towards drafting a new Bill to address these issues in a more structured and targeted manner,' she stated. In response to a follow-up question from Tumpat MP Datuk Hajah Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-PAS), Nancy revealed that many of those detained suffer from mental health issues or drug dependency. These individuals are referred to the Health Ministry for temporary care before being returned to JKM custody. 'For this case, the list is quite long. If we break it down by state and by category, the data becomes very detailed. So, if possible, I would prefer to provide it in written form, as the statistics are too extensive to present here,' she added.

Kemumin raid based on credible intelligence, not discrimination, say cops
KOTA BHARU: Police have clarified that the recent raid on a private gathering at a homestay in Kemumin was conducted based on valid intelligence and evidence, with no intent of discrimination. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was carried out to maintain public order and safeguard moral values. He said intelligence revealed that invitations to the event, 'Majlis Malam Mesra Komuniti & Santai-Santai' were shared via WhatsApp among a select group, with no involvement from any official body such as an NGO or the Health Ministry. "On the day of the event, the Kelantan Police Task Force began surveillance at 5pm and observed around 100 individuals gathering to eat and socialise. The raid was carried out at about 1am to ensure public safety," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 22) night. He added that 20 individuals at the premises admitted to being part of the gay community. Among them were a man from Perak and a student from a higher education institution in Besut, Terengganu, while the rest were locals from Kelantan. Mohd Yusoff also said that checks on their mobile phones found three individuals in possession of pornographic videos involving same-sex acts. "All three were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and pleaded guilty in the Kota Bharu Magistrate's Court on July 20. They were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000," he said. The raid also uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication at the premises. He advised the public not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with authorities to preserve harmony in the state. On Tuesday, the Kelantan government reminded all parties to inform local authorities and relevant agencies in advance before organising any events, to avoid confusion, misunderstanding, and negative public perception. RM5.2mil worth of unregistered traditional medicine seized in Penang
KEPALA BATAS: Thousands of bottles of unregistered traditional medicine products and hundreds of packages of raw materials worth a total of RM5.2mil said to contain scheduled poisons have been seized. The raid by the health authorities and the police on six premises also saw two units of manufacturing machinery being seized. Conducted on July 15, it was headed by the Penang Health Department's Pharmacy Enforcement Branch, in collaboration with the police and the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM). Among the products confiscated were over 71,000 bottles of unregistered traditional medicine products and more than 500 packages of raw materials suspected to contain scheduled poisons. 'This operation shows the Health Ministry's firm commitment to addressing public complaints and curbing the sale of unregistered products and items that are adulterated with harmful substances,' the Penang Health Department said in a statement yesterday. The Health Ministry also reminded the public to exercise caution and avoid being misled by online advertisements or testimonials on websites, social media or e-commerce platforms that make exaggerated medical claims. Under the law, a person can be fined up to RM50,000 or given a jail term not exceeding five years – or both, if found to be in possession of scheduled poisons for sale without a valid licence, said the ministry. Meanwhile, selling unregistered health products or non-notified cosmetics contravenes the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, punishable under the Sale of Drugs Act 1952, it added. 'Offenders may face a fine of up to RM25,000 or a jail sentence not exceeding three years for the first offence, and up to RM50,000 or five years' imprisonment for subsequent offences, while companies found guilty may be fined up to RM100,000. Consumers can verify the registration status of medicines or cosmetic notification through the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) website at or by contacting NPRA directly at 03-7883 5400. The ministry said it will continue to combat the illegal distribution and sale of medicines through its 'Say No to Illegal Medicines' campaign, an initiative launched by the Pharmacy Enforcement Division in 2024. The public, it said, can report any suspicious medicines or cosmetics via the Public Agency Complaint Management System (SisPAA) at contact any nearby Pharmacy Enforcement Branch or call 03-7841 3200 for further action.
