Telangana healthcare gets a bureaucratic boost; civil servants choose govt. hospitals for medical needs
In a powerful endorsement of Telangana's government healthcare, several senior bureaucrats and civil servants have chosen public hospitals over private facilities for treatment and childbirth this year — not out of compulsion, but conviction. Their choices are reshaping perceptions, showing that trust in the State's healthcare system is no longer limited to the underprivileged, but shared by those who help shape public policy themselves.
In April, Peddapalli District Collector Koya Sree Harsha and his wife Vijaya welcomed a baby boy at the Government General Hospital in Godavarikhani, Ramagundam. According to District Medical and Health Officer Anna Prasanna Kumari, the new mother also received all her antenatal care at the same hospital, validating the family's complete faith in public healthcare services.
A month later, Bhadradri Kothagudem district Collector Jitesh V. Patil and his wife Shraddha followed suit. Instead of heading to the district's specialised Mother and Child Health (MCH) centre, the couple opted for the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Palvancha.
'Their decision to rely on a CHC rather than a tertiary facility highlights their confidence in Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) institutions,' said Ravi Babu, District Coordinator for Health Services.
In June, Karimnagar Collector Pamela Satpathy underwent a Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) along with a septoplasty at the Government General Hospital in Karimnagar, once again reinforcing faith in the State's secondary healthcare infrastructure.
These aren't isolated choices but part of a growing trend among senior civil servants who are placing trust in the system they help administer. The shift began years ago. In 2017, then Jayashankar Bhupalpally Collector Akunuri Murali admitted his daughter to the Government General Hospital in Mulugu, where she delivered a baby girl. Mr.Murali is now the chairperson of the Telangana Education Commission.
'At that time, government hospitals in the district were seeing just around 80 deliveries a month. Based on population demographics, we should have had about 850. Despite our efforts to improve the facilities, people were still hesitant to come. When my daughter was pregnant, I asked her if she would be willing to deliver at a government hospital. She agreed, and the following month, the number of deliveries jumped to 450,' said Mr.Murali.
'When public officials themselves choose government hospitals, it sends across a powerful message. It builds trust and shows the public that these facilities are not just functional, but reliable too,' he added.
In 2021, former Bhadradri Kothagudem Collector Anudeep Durishetty and his wife chose the Government Area Hospital in Bhadrachalam for the birth of their son. Mr.Durishetty later served as the Hyderabad Collector and is currently posted as Khammam district collector.
In 2022, Ila Tripathi, then Additional Collector (Local Bodies) of Mulugu district and present collector of Nalgonda district, delivered her child at the Government Area Hospital, Mulugu.

State launches awareness campaign to control diarrhoea outbreak
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Health minister Mukesh Mahaling on Monday visited the community health centre (CHC) at Bhuban in Dhenkanal district to meet diarrhoea patients and assess the situation. He also launched a state-wide awareness campaign at the CHC to contain the outbreak with 2,000 diarrhoea and cholera cases reported from Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Cuttack districts. While 17 unofficial deaths have been reported from Jajpur (14), Keonjhar (2) and Kendrapada (1) districts, the govt has confirmed five casualties and is reviewing another five. "Diarrhoea is a waterborne disease prevalent during monsoon. State govt is taking all necessary measures for the prevention and control of the disease. Comprehensive awareness programmes are being conducted along with improved healthcare, essential equipment, medicines and infrastructure. The campaign will run until July 31," said Mahaling. In an official statement, the health department said extensive health awareness and integrated efforts are being made to combat diarrhoea. Practices such as hand washing, maintaining hygiene, eating balanced meals, drinking safe water, keeping water sources clean, and avoiding open defecation can significantly prevent diarrhoea. Through awareness and caution, individuals can stay healthy and keep their families and neighbours safe, it added. As part of the campaign, adequate stocks of ORS packets, zinc tablets and medicines would be maintained at all anganwadi centres, health sub-centres and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. Health and anganwadi workers, ANMs, and multi-purpose health workers in rural and urban areas would be trained to identify and manage diarrhoea from the initial stages, the statement said. Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) teams from Jagatsinghpur and Khurda districts have been sent to Jajpur district to assist the health workers. Mahaling advised the public to follow the advice of health workers and doctors and seek medical treatment at health centres if they experience diarrhoea. He also visited the Kamakhyanagar sub-divisional hospital to review the situation with local representatives. Central teams, who visited Jajpur district to study the situation, returned to Bhubaneswar and attended a review meeting with health officials. They recommended several steps to control the cholera and diarrhoea situation. "Cholera was detected in stool tests. The state health team is taking necessary steps. They are also analysing the diarrhoeacases every day," said Dr Bhagirathi Dwivedi, a central team member. Another team member, Dr Shibani Lahiri, said diarrhoea is in an endemic stage and there is a little surge in cases. Health secretary Aswathy S said disinfection of drinking water sources will be done across the state as monsoon has already arrived. "We are taking all required steps to combat the situation," she added. She visited various areas of Jajpur district to conduct field-level monitoring and review the diarrhoea management programme. A review meeting with district administration primarily focused on the admission, immediate treatment, and recovery of diarrhoea patients. She instructed that each diarrhoea case be mapped, and emphasised necessary treatment for admitted patients and their discharge from hospital only after full recovery.

Karimnagar collector undergoes Sinus Surgery at Telangana Government Hospital
In a move set to bolster people's trust in the public healthcare system, Karimnagar Collector Pamela Satpathy underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) along with Septoplasty at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Karimnagar on Sunday (June 15, 2025) evening. Ms. Satpathy, a 2015-batch IAS officer, has drawn praise from various quarters for her inspirational act to encourage people to make use of the expertise of doctors and healthcare services in the government hospitals. Earlier, there have been instances of the officers or their family members opting for government hospitals for childbirth. This is one of the rare instances when a bureaucrat opted for a government health facility for a surgery. Ms. Satpathy has been suffering from headaches, nasal issues and sinusitis for the past few months. When the symptoms of sinusitis got aggravated, she opted for the surgery at the GGH in Karimnagar, sources said She was operated upon by a team of ENT surgeons under the supervision of the hospital superintendent G. Veera Reddy. The surgery lasted for around one and a half hour and she was kept under post-operative observation after surgery, hospital sources added. Meanwhile, Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha appreciated Ms. Satpathy for setting an inspiring example by choosing to undergo FESS along with Septoplasty at the GGH, Karimnagar. In a post on 'X' on Monday, the minister commended the medical superintendent and the team of ENT surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff and support personnel for successfully performing the complex procedure at the GGH. He praised the collector for being a role model in promoting the use of quality healthcare services available in government hospitals and wished her a speedy and complete recovery.
