Bhubaneswar: Health minister Mukesh Mahaling on Monday visited the community health centre (CHC) at Bhuban in Dhenkanal district to meet diarrhoea patients and assess the situation.
He also launched a state-wide awareness campaign at the CHC to contain the outbreak with 2,000 diarrhoea and cholera cases reported from Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Cuttack districts. While 17 unofficial deaths have been reported from Jajpur (14), Keonjhar (2) and Kendrapada (1) districts, the govt has confirmed five casualties and is reviewing another five.
"Diarrhoea is a waterborne disease prevalent during monsoon.
State govt is taking all necessary measures for the prevention and control of the disease. Comprehensive awareness programmes are being conducted along with improved healthcare, essential equipment, medicines and infrastructure. The campaign will run until July 31," said Mahaling.
In an official statement, the health department said extensive health awareness and integrated efforts are being made to combat diarrhoea.
Practices such as hand washing, maintaining hygiene, eating balanced meals, drinking safe water, keeping water sources clean, and avoiding open defecation can significantly prevent diarrhoea. Through awareness and caution, individuals can stay healthy and keep their families and neighbours safe, it added.
As part of the campaign, adequate stocks of ORS packets, zinc tablets and medicines would be maintained at all anganwadi centres, health sub-centres and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
Health and anganwadi workers, ANMs, and multi-purpose health workers in rural and urban areas would be trained to identify and manage diarrhoea from the initial stages, the statement said. Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) teams from Jagatsinghpur and Khurda districts have been sent to Jajpur district to assist the health workers.
Mahaling advised the public to follow the advice of health workers and doctors and seek medical treatment at health centres if they experience diarrhoea.
He also visited the Kamakhyanagar sub-divisional hospital to review the situation with local representatives.
Central teams, who visited Jajpur district to study the situation, returned to Bhubaneswar and attended a review meeting with health officials. They recommended several steps to control the cholera and diarrhoea situation. "Cholera was detected in stool tests. The state health team is taking necessary steps.
They are also analysing the diarrhoeacases every day," said Dr Bhagirathi Dwivedi, a central team member.
Another team member, Dr Shibani Lahiri, said diarrhoea is in an endemic stage and there is a little surge in cases.
Health secretary Aswathy S said disinfection of drinking water sources will be done across the state as monsoon has already arrived. "We are taking all required steps to combat the situation," she added. She visited various areas of Jajpur district to conduct field-level monitoring and review the diarrhoea management programme. A review meeting with district administration primarily focused on the admission, immediate treatment, and recovery of diarrhoea patients.
She instructed that each diarrhoea case be mapped, and emphasised necessary treatment for admitted patients and their discharge from hospital only after full recovery.

1,140 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will be opened by March 2026: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said 1,140 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM) will be opened by March 2026 in the national Capital. Speaking at the launch of 33 AAMs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendra across the city, Gupta said they have a deadline of March 2026 to finish the task of building these community health centres. 'The central government gave a grant of ₹2,400 crore to the Delhi government in 2020 for opening Arogya Mandirs, but the then Delhi government did not let the city avail these facilities due to ego and misunderstanding. When we got the responsibility, we started setting up the Arogya Mandirs utilising the funds. A total of 1,140 Arogya Mandirs have been sanctioned in Delhi, and we have to finish the work by March otherwise the funds will lapse. The work which could have been easily done in the last five years for the benefits of the people will have to be done in the next eight months so that the funds allotted for the people do not lapse,' said Gupta. Also Read: Delhi: BJP repackaged our clinics as Arogya Mandirs, says AAP Tuesday's inauguration of 33 AAMs was done across the national Capital with CM Gupta along with her six cabinet ministers, seven MPs and MLAs. 'Today 33 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras are being opened in Delhi at the same time. Our ministers, MPs, and MLAs are inaugurating the facilities at separate locations. In these centres, many health facilities have been provided for the people which were otherwise not available for them,' CM Gupta said while addressing a gathering at Tis Hazari in East Delhi district after inaugurating the health facilities. In Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, in-house lab tests are available, along with 12 different kinds of health services while in the 17 Jan Aushdhi Kendra, medicines are available at affordable rates. Cabinet minister Parvesh Verma inaugurated the facility at Babar Road while Kapil Mishra in Khajuri Khas while Ashish Sood inaugurated it in Janakpuri. South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri inaugurated the facility in Tughlaqabad while North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari inaugurated the facility in Yamuna Vihar. CM Gupta criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government over the previous Mohalla Clinics that turned into 'corruption spots' 'In the name of Mohalla Clinics, a porta cabin was set up by the roadside, a temporary health office was stationed there and was paid ₹40 per patient. In such a situation, will the health officer concentrate on providing the health services or counting the patients? The billing (in Mohalla Clinics) was the biggest source of corruption… medicines were not available to the people, nor the people were provided health services... the Mohalla Clinics were the biggest sources of corruption under the previous government health model where in the name of outsourcing the testing crores of rupees were looted... inflated rents were paid for the Mohalla Clinics... many of these centres turned into the shelter of cattle or addicts...,' A comment from the AAP is awaited, and the copy will be updated whenever it is received.
