There was no better way of keeping to the theme of this year's Metro FM awards, Crowning Greatness, than driving in the classy Mercedes-Benz V300D.
The Metro FM awards were held at Mpumalanga's Mbombela stadium for the final year after being hosted in the province for three years.

The elegant spaceship
For a person who drives a hatchback, manual car every day, being behind the wheel of this gentle beast, the V300D, felt like driving an elegant spaceship.
The Mercedes-Benz V300d has advanced tech features, including a suite of driver-assistance systems, premium audio, and comfort features.
The V300D's size and elegance can be deceptive; it's a powerful car. You can go from zero to 100 in just under eight seconds.

Features
One of my favourite things was using the 'Hey Mercedes' command, like having my own Siri in the car.
The feature activates the Mercedes-Benz MBUX voice control system, which allows for a wide range of commands related to vehicle functions such as adjusting the temperature, navigation, entertainment, and more.
The feature is equally fun as it is convenient.
At first glance, some of the features might be intimidatingly overwhelming, but once you understand which button does what, you're in paradise.
Something as small as adjusting your seat to your desire, which in my car is found just below my driver's seat, where I have to labour in changing it, the Mercedes V300D has buttons on both sides of the front doors that help with seat adjustment.
That gorgeous spaceship feeling was livened up as we drove past Waterval Boven in the evening, when the blue lights came on inside the car.
The blue (there are other colour choices) lights are not too much. They automatically switch on when it gets dark outside. There is just a strip on the dashboard of the car to give a sense of warmth.
It can be used as a family car or, as many people we spotted it at garages assumed, a high-end party bus.
Regardless of how you use this car, you are guaranteed comfort, power, and elegance in the Mercedes-Benz V300D.

New Brabus XLP 800 6x6 Adventure is a crusher of subtlety

If you subscribe to the ethos that bigger is better, then you're sure to like the new Brabus XLP 800 6x6 Adventure. Based on the W465-generation Mercedes-AMG G 63, this road-going behemoth features a bespoke steel frame chassis built to accommodate three portal axles, providing 470mm of ground clearance and maximum axle articulation. Other notable upgrades include fully adjustable KW suspension and six driven Brabus Monoblock HD 9.5Jx22 wheels wrapped in dirt-flinging 325/55 all-terrain tyres, all tucked under burly Brabus Widestar fenders with exposed-structure carbon trim. This composite is also used for numerous elements on the body, including the pick-up bedsides. A matt black roll bar behind the cab completes the striking pick-up profile, while a winch integrated into the carbon-trimmed bumper is ready for tough off-road recoveries. Lift the bonnet and you'll find a Brabus-tuned 4.0 l twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 588kW and 1,000Nm of torque. Despite its size and heft, the Brabus XLP 800 6x6 Adventure sprints from 0—100km/h in 5.8 seconds and reaches a limited top speed of 210km/h. Climb into the cabin and you're greeted by an exclusive Brabus Masterpiece interior, upholstered in a blend of luxurious black leather and Dinamica microfibre. This is contrasted by more than 200 cockpit elements finished in Rocket Red — everything from switches and air vents to panels, handles and anodised door-locking pins. The Brabus XLP 800 6x6 Adventure is built to order and priced from €1,161,000 (R23,875,372).

Ola Kaellenius calls for ‘reality check', slams EU combustion engine ban

The CEO of Mercedes-Benz criticised the EU's plan to ban CO 2 -emitting vehicles from 2035 in a media interview on Monday, joining a chorus of voices calling the target into question as it comes up for review this year. The ban, which supporters said is crucial to Europe's green ambitions, is up for review in the second half of 2025, with critics saying it would handicap European carmakers struggling with weak demand, Chinese competition and disappointing electric vehicle sales. "We need a reality check otherwise we are heading at full speed against a wall," Mercedes CEO Ola Kaellenius told the Handelsblatt business daily of the 2035 goal, adding Europe's car market could "collapse" if it goes ahead. Kaellenius argued consumers would hurry to buy cars with petrol or diesel engines ahead of the ban. Serving as head of the European auto lobby Acea, the German car boss has instead called for tax incentives and cheap power prices at charging stations to encourage the switch to electric cars. "Of course we have to decarbonise, but it has to be done in a technology neutral way. We must not lose sight of our economy."
