JJ Tabane, Londie London and more talk about Helen Zille's Roast
Whether it is her hard-hitting journalism or the indelible mark she has left in South Africa's politics, DA federal chair Helen Zille has become known for her approach to public affairs and media.
Never afraid to jump in front of the camera with viral stars and meme kings and queens, May 16 will see her survive her first Comedy Central Roast.
From Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff to US President Donald Trump, the Roasts have been a popular stage for big-name Hollywood figures and has-beens alike, who are honoured for their achievements through insult comedy.
Speaking to Zille on the event's red carpet, TimesLIVE asked whether this was her downplaying some of the contentious and divisive remarks made in the past that have offended many in and out of politics.
Zille said she was more than keen to leave people feeling hot under the collar. 'I'm here to ruffle some more feathers. I'm here to take feather-ruffling to the next level,' she said.
We spoke to a stars who will take to the stage to find out what they think about Zille's upcoming Roast.
NAMBITHA BEN-MAZWI
I think this is a smart rebrand. We get to see a side of her that is more likeable for the target audience, which is us, the youth. Politics is very serious and there's a lot we can get into, but I try not to get into it publicly. These are my dinner-party conversations. However, I think it's a very smart strategy and after tonight I think there will be a huge audience that follows her and sees her in a different light.
I see the Martha Stewart strategy here. It will be a rebrand and you won't see it coming.
JJ TABANE
She has to account for the things she's said. My view is that her tongue is a double-edged sword. That's what I'll be taking the Mickey out of.

What makes it great — and we've watched a lot of American ones — we want somebody who is on top of people's minds and they've affected people one way or another. They have a large body of work and with Helen we had to cut down on the things we want to talk about. She is the perfect fit for this.

All I can say is you guys need to look out for this Roast. Nothing is going to be downplayed. Everything about Helen is out there, so she can be roasted about it. That auntie has a lot of issues, from the things she did in the 2010s to her issues with Zuma. It will be an interesting Roast.

The R13 million library in Orange Farm: A year of unfulfilled promises

Chiloane's predecessor as Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Morakane Mosupyoe, who is now the speaker of the Gauteng provincial legislature, on May 24, 2024, officially opened the library five days before last year's elections on May 29. Image: Supplied It was scheduled to open to the public on May 27 and offer lending services (print and online), reference service and research support, study space and support with access to dedicated study areas and programme implementation, including reading development programmes such as the Battle of the Books and the Story Skirmish starting from July last year. Other promised offerings included e-learning programmes such as digital skills and basic coding for children of all ages, children's services, including homework assistance, story hours, and holiday programmes, as well as photocopying services. The Drieziek library was also meant to fulfil various community-centred roles, such as a community centre, which would be a place for learning, socialising, meetings, business, research, and education for children. There would be an entertainment space offering fiction, audiobooks, and online resources for community enjoyment, an empowerment centre providing digital skills training, reading and learning skills, and assistance with online job applications. Other services were a knowledge and information centre supporting lifelong learning through various print and online resources, an education space encouraging quiet reading, learning and research, and community discussions. However, Chabalala complained that a year later, it remains inaccessible and unbeneficial to Orange Farm residents, while funds are wasted on security and maintenance. He said that when the provincial legislature's Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation conducted an unannounced oversight visit on May 21 this year, members found only a security guard present. 'The DA has tabled questions in the legislature to Chiloane, to determine why this facility is closed to the public and inquire about the amount spent on security and maintenance,' said Chabalala, adding that residents were frustrated because they must commute to nearby townships to access libraries while their own is gathering dust.

Malema should apologise for 'Kill the Boer' chant
Pastor Mark Burns said Malema singing the song is "hurting my white brothers and sister" in SA. An American pastor who is a fierce ally and supporter of US President Donald Trump believes the EFF and its leader Julius Malema should not be taken seriously and are attention-seekers for chanting the 'divisive' 'Kill the Boer, kill the farmer'. Pastor Burns has defended his stance that there is no white genocide being perpetrated against white Afrikaners in South Africa After recently visiting South Africa and speaking to white farmers, Burns said he does not believe there is a genocide being perpetrated against White Afrikaners in the country, adding everyone he talked to was 'extremely shocked to discover that this was the narrative being played out in Washington, DC.' Ambush Last month, Trump ambushed President Cyril Ramaphosa by playing a video of Malema's speech to support his claims of an alleged white genocide against farmers. He also questioned why the EFF leader had not been arrested. 'Yes, Mandela, whom President Trump spoke highly of, has great respect for him, and he spoke about him twice, did sing that song. Even your Constitutional [Court], I think, voted that it was his [Malema's] legal right to sing the song, it's still causing division in our nation, on a nation that is still pretty new from apartheid,' Burn said. Burns dismissed the EFF leader as 'just a character who is screaming, trying to garner attention for himself'. The Constitutional Court (ConCourt) delivered a brief ruling dismissing AfriForum's application for leave to appeal. Malema said he would never be intimidated by Trump. 'Well, I'm not fearful. As a revolutionary, part of being killed is one of those honours you must wear with pride, but I'm not going to be reckless. 'I will never stop singing a song that Winnie Mandela sang. That would be a betrayal to the struggle of our people'. 'False propaganda' Burns said he has been accused of spreading 'false propaganda' about no white genocide taking place in South Africa. 'To those accusing me of spreading false propaganda because I don't believe there is a white genocide happening among South African farmers, I say this: go speak to the White Afrikaans farmers and former apartheid leaders I met with. 'Some of them are strongly anti-ANC, yet they still shared serious concerns about safety in their communities. If that is considered false propaganda, then they are being accused of spreading it about their own people, which doesn't make sense,' Burns said. 'But based on what I saw and what was shared with me, far more black South Africans are being killed by the same criminal elements that are thriving in a weak and struggling economy. 'Let's be clear. There is only one South Africa. The days of racial division under the apartheid government are over. South Africa is the Rainbow Nation, built on unity, diversity, and hope. 'White Afrikaans, Black Africans, and all others are South Africans together. The future of the country depends on people standing together, not apart,' Burns said. Who is Burns? Burns is the minister of Harvest Worship Centre in South Carolina and a Republican who ran for state governor. He served as a board member of pastors for Trump.
