Netflix viewers rush to watch 'astonishing' three-part Cilla Black drama

Daily Mirror4 days ago

Cilla originally aired on ITV back in 2014 and has now arrived on Netflix for viewers to binge
Netflix subscribers have been praising a three-part drama featuring Sheridan Smith, which recently debuted on the streaming platform.
Originally broadcast on ITV in 2014, Cilla stars Sheridan as the legendary singer Cilla Black.

The series delves into the early stages of Cilla's career and explores how her life was transformed upon meeting Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles.

Sheridan is joined by a stellar cast including Aneurin Barnard as Cilla's husband Bobby, Ed Stoppard portraying Brian Epstein, John Henshaw as Cilla's father, and Melanie Hill as Cilla's mother.
The official synopsis for Cilla reads: "'Cilla' tells of her rocky rise to fame and will capture the essence of 1960s Liverpool, the atmosphere of promise and excitement as the Merseybeat music scene was on the verge of exploding in a blaze of tight-fitting skirts, stiletto heels, and beehives."
It further elaborates: "A young, unknown Cilla works in the austere environs of the typists' pool at a local company, dreaming of stardom. The drama looks at how she met the two men who came to love her and ultimately fought over her - future husband Bobby Willis and legendary manager Brian Epstein, the tragic young businessman who also guided the career of The Beatles.
"We learn how Cilla's burgeoning friendship with John, Paul, George, and Ringo - the four young men who went on to conquer the music world - shaped her career.
"It was family friend Ritchie Starkey (Ringo), the teddy-boy with a greasy quiff, who helped her to cross paths with Brian Epstein and producer George Martin, who were to launch her career with recording sessions at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios."

The series has garnered high praise from viewers, many of whom have lauded Sheridan Smith's stunning representation of Cilla, née Priscilla Maria Veronica White, reports Surrey Live.
"Brilliant portrayal of Cilla by Sheridan Smith, who also sings all the songs! Wow! The whole cast were fabulous. One not to be missed," exclaimed one viewer on Google.
Another telly buff penned: "Brilliant. Loved this series, Smith always smashes it," while another chimed in, adding: "Great performance by all and gives a great feel for the early 60's in Liverpool."

Recounting the shocking story, Stephen explained that "past the age of 45, you need to go to the toilet more" but found himself unable to urinate for reasons he didn't know. "I'm like, Oh, this doesn't feel right" he told the host. "I knew I had to, and then silly Stephen thought, 'Oh, well, if I go back to my seat and I just keep drinking water, at some point it will happen.'" However, he shared that an hour later, when he tried to go again "long story short, all of a sudden I went, but it was just pure blood." Admitting it was "very scary", Stephen reached out to a doctor he already knew was on the plane for advice and help. "Next minute, the doctor comes around the corner, and he goes, Stephen! and I'm like 'Doc, hello!', and I explained the situation. "He had another friend with him, who was a surgeon, so I'm there, and I explain. He's like, okay, and the surgeon, Dr Haji, says, we can work this out." However, Stephen noted that they then sterilised the lounge area between the economy and first class seats, and a catheter is pulled out of an emergency box. When shocked Seth asked if anyone had walked in on him, Stephen thanked the crew on the flight for keeping curtains drawn so he could have some privacy during the sensitive operation. "I drop me kecks, I get on the couch, and he performs a catheter operation there and then," Stephen said, later sharing a selfie he grabbed with the doctors after the op was done. Emmerdale star confirms return for popular character and 'big' scenes ahead

Emmerdale's April Windsor actress Amelia Flanagan told The Mirror at the British Soap Awards all about a return to the ITV soap, which had been announced by bosses a while back One Emmerdale favourite's return to the show could be imminent, with Amelia Flanagan who plays April Windsor spilling all. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the actress, who won the award for Best Young Performer at this year's event, finally spoke out about the big news that a comeback was on the cards. The return had been announced by boss Laura Shaw months ago, but no details were given and no date was revealed either. ‌ April star Amelia has spoken for the first time about the looming return of Dylan Penders, played by actor Fred Kettle. The character debuted earlier this year as part of the teen's huge storyline that saw her living on the streets after running away from home. ‌ Dylan ended up following April to the village but after an overdose, he went to rehab and appeared to leave the show. The character proved a hit with fans though, and bosses decided to bring him back. It's now thought he will cause trouble for April and will feature in a big storyline in the village. He appeared to be filming already too which means he could be back onscreen within weeks. Speaking to us about the return for the first some, Amelia shared she was thrilled and was excited to explore Dylan and April further. She also teased there was some "big" stuff ahead, while revealing all on growing up on the soap after more than 11 years in the role. Amelia told us: "April has had an incredibly tough year with what she has been through, with the pregnancy and the homelessness storyline. April and Dylan didn't leave things on the best terms, but I think what is important now is that he's back. "Who knows what will happen. It will be great to explore that relationship further, I think fans want to see that which is great." Viewers have seen April having a tough time recently, struggling to adjust to life back in the village after the heartbreaking stillbirth if her daughter. ‌ Her and her dad Marlon Dingle have been at each other's throats for months, with Marlon struggling to get through to her and April trying to find her way. But there's positive scenes ahead, with "big" storylines teased too. Amelia told us: "I think hopefully the future is looking bright for all of them. They have been through so much with recent events. She's been dealt a hard hand in life in the last year or so, and we're gonna see more of April's journey. ‌ "She has been in the village for a long time now. She's been growing as a person and it's an incredible thing to explore with the show. I am excited for the bigger storylines to stick my teeth into." On her time on the show, she added: "I've been on the show for 11 and a half years now. It's been a long time. With April's journey, so much has happened, it's important to remember what has led her to be the way she is now, as far back as Donna's death. I think it's brilliant exploring new things." Amelia also praised her co-star Mike Parr, who plays Ross Barton, for his support towards her. She said: "Ross is like a big brother to April and it's very true to real life. I always say Mike is like a big brother. I love him to pieces, he's incredible and we have the best time together. Hopefully we see more of them onscreen." Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.

JoJo Siwa wants love with Chris to 'last a lifetime' and plans a romantic tattoo

The Celebrity Big Brother stars met each other on the ITV reality show and struck up a close friendship that has now blossomed into something more JoJo Siwa has revealed just how serious things are getting between her and Love Island alum Chris Hughes, saying she wants their blossoming romance to "last for a lifetime" and admitting that she is even planning a tattoo to commemorate their connection. The pop star and former Dance Moms cast member, 22, met Chris during their time on Celebrity Big Brother in April 2025. What started as a close friendship started to raise eyebrows as the duo got up close and personal on the show, frequently kissing on the cheek and even cuddling in the same bed, and JoJo has now confirmed the pair are officially more than friends. ‌ ‌ While on the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, JoJo gushed about what initially drew her to Chris, saying: "When he first walked in, he was the only person that I knew what they looked like before coming into the show. "I was 'Oh that's the Chris guy'. Initially the first thing that I took in about him was he was a good hugger. I liked his hug. That felt like a nice embrace. And he smelt good." Their connection started off as quite light hearted and mostly involved supporting each other through ups and downs in the Big Brother house, but JoJo admitted that deeper feelings started to develop over time. She shared: "We just kind of bonded right away and it started very much so as friends. I wasn't looking to fall for him. He wasn't looking to fall for me. We just were having so much fun together." JoJo also reflected on a particularly emotional moment in the Big Brother house where she realised just how close she was to Chris, saying: "There was a day – it was Easter – and he was having a really, really rough day... He came out of the diary room and he was like 'I had a stomach ache'. And I looked at him and I was like 'you're not good'. And I just gave him a hug... He really opened up and he wasn't ok, he really wasn't ok. I was able to be there for him." After her return to the US, JoJo admitted she found it hard being apart from Chris. But now she is back in the UK, and thinking long-term. ‌ She admitted: "I want Chris to last for a lifetime." JoJo also revealed that she is planning to get a tattoo to commemorate their love story. "The Chris tattoo, I said in Big Brother that I would get this bamboo I want to get two other tattoos from the Big Brother house of memories that I have from in there," she explained. While it is seen as unlucky to get a tattoo of a new partner in case the relationship goes wrong and you are stuck with a daily reminder of them, JoJo is hoping to bypass any consequences by making sure the tattoo is primarily a reminder of her Celeb Big Brother experience. Some fans have questioned whether the relationship is just a PR stunt, but JoJo recently shut those rumours down, telling The Guardian: "It's not platonic any more... I'm absolutely head over heels for him, and he's the same way. Clearly, [the trolls have] never been around us. The happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now."
