Netflix viewers rush to watch 'astonishing' three-part Cilla Black drama

Daily Mirror02-06-2025
Cilla originally aired on ITV back in 2014 and has now arrived on Netflix for viewers to binge
Netflix subscribers have been praising a three-part drama featuring Sheridan Smith, which recently debuted on the streaming platform.
Originally broadcast on ITV in 2014, Cilla stars Sheridan as the legendary singer Cilla Black.

The series delves into the early stages of Cilla's career and explores how her life was transformed upon meeting Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles.

Sheridan is joined by a stellar cast including Aneurin Barnard as Cilla's husband Bobby, Ed Stoppard portraying Brian Epstein, John Henshaw as Cilla's father, and Melanie Hill as Cilla's mother.
The official synopsis for Cilla reads: "'Cilla' tells of her rocky rise to fame and will capture the essence of 1960s Liverpool, the atmosphere of promise and excitement as the Merseybeat music scene was on the verge of exploding in a blaze of tight-fitting skirts, stiletto heels, and beehives."
It further elaborates: "A young, unknown Cilla works in the austere environs of the typists' pool at a local company, dreaming of stardom. The drama looks at how she met the two men who came to love her and ultimately fought over her - future husband Bobby Willis and legendary manager Brian Epstein, the tragic young businessman who also guided the career of The Beatles.
"We learn how Cilla's burgeoning friendship with John, Paul, George, and Ringo - the four young men who went on to conquer the music world - shaped her career.
"It was family friend Ritchie Starkey (Ringo), the teddy-boy with a greasy quiff, who helped her to cross paths with Brian Epstein and producer George Martin, who were to launch her career with recording sessions at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios."

The series has garnered high praise from viewers, many of whom have lauded Sheridan Smith's stunning representation of Cilla, née Priscilla Maria Veronica White, reports Surrey Live.
"Brilliant portrayal of Cilla by Sheridan Smith, who also sings all the songs! Wow! The whole cast were fabulous. One not to be missed," exclaimed one viewer on Google.
Another telly buff penned: "Brilliant. Loved this series, Smith always smashes it," while another chimed in, adding: "Great performance by all and gives a great feel for the early 60's in Liverpool."

Has Steph Miligan left Emmerdale for good as Georgia Jay departs?

This article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that has not aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Steph Miligan (Georgia Jay) recently reconciled with Ross Barton (Mike Parr) in Emmerdale after a bit of timely intervention by Ross's brother Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches). Ross and Steph had formed quite a bond after getting together initially through a combination of lust and Steph wanting to wind her parents up. The relationship evolved into one of genuine affection on both sides. But then Steph learned that her beloved grandfather Anthony (Nicholas Day) was actually her biological father after he abused her mum, Ruby (Beth Cordingly). And then she found that Ruby had killed Anthony and his body had been disposed of by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) in an as yet to be disclosed location. In the aftermath of discovering Anthony's abuse, Steph became fixated on her resemblance to him and was so desperate she even tried to have surgery to alter her appearance. Ross wanted to support her through this hard time, but she pushed him away. She's since been going to therapy to try to help her move on. Lewis's recent match-making brought the two back together again, and this time Steph felt comfortable enough for them to sleep together. After this, Ross declared that there hadn't been anyone else in his life since he and Steph broke up, casually omitting to mention he'd had a fling with Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker). This was exposed by Manpreet while in the cafe with Lewis and Ruby, who were gossiping about her love life – or lack thereof. Manpreet casually confirmed she slept with Ross just as he walked into the cafe with Steph. Unaware that the couple were back together, Manpreet didn't realise she had unintentionally just exposed Ross as a liar. Steph, who had worked hard to tell herself that she could trust Ross again, was devastated and made it clear she didn't want to continue their relationship. And even Ross admitting that he was in love with Steph wasn't enough! In the episode of the ITV soap that airs this evening, Steph tells her parents that she's booked a yoga retreat in Rome. She wants to get away from the village for a while, and Ruby and Caleb (William Ash) are very understanding. Just as she gets into the taxi, Ross tries to get her to change her mind, but Steph doesn't want to be anywhere near him. Steph's departure ties in with Georgia Jay's maternity leave, following the announcement she is expecting her first baby. As ever with temporary departures, we will see Steph again soon, but just when that will be remains unknown at the moment. Announcing her pregnancy on Instagram, Georgia wrote back in June: 'As you've probably guessed, I've got some news to share! I know some of you have been wondering if you've been seeing a little bump on screen lately… well, it's not your imagination…I'm having a baby!'. She added: 'We've never been so excited and a little nervous all at once. Thank you for all the love and support.' In upcoming episodes Ruby decides to confront Manpreet at the surgery about her fling with Ross. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Manpreet's embarrassed and later on turns up at the Depot to retaliate. Ruby refuses to speak to her, so Manpreet hijacks a forklift and refuses to get off until Ruby talks to her. More Trending Goading Ruby, Manpreet brings up the subject of her ill-advised dalliance with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) on the day of Moira (Natalie J Robb)'s surgery. Ruby brushes this off as it's old news, but when Manpreet mentions Steph, Ruby flips and attacks her. The fight escalates and they're both eventually arrested and taken into custody – giving them ample opportunity to thrash out their differences. MrBeast's wildest videos amid ‘real-life Hunger Games' idea

MrBeast has floated the idea of doing a 'real life' version of Hunger Games - without the killing, of course. The YouTube megastar is known for his extremely wild stunts in his videos. He shot to mainstream success after he released his $426,000 Squid Game in Real Life back in November 2021. Costing a reported $3m to make, the video has passed 800 million views on YouTube as of August 2025. But MrBeast might not yet be done with remakes of dystopian death games. In an appearance on The Today Show over in the US, he was asked about his idea for a real life version of the Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence starred in the movie adaptations in the 2010s, while another prequel film is due to arrive in 2026: Sunrise on the Reaping. The books and films feature teenagers forced to compete in brutal death matches, for the entertainment of the rich in the capitol. MrBeast told Today Show his version would 'not use real weapons' and involve dropping 26 people on an island, with the last one standing winning $1m. He pitched using 'laser tag' instead of actually killing the contestants, like in the original novels. It comes after his own reality show Beast Games came to an end earlier this year and crowned its first winner. Find out more about that here. Now he is talking about doing his own version of Hunger Games, I thought I would take a look at some of MrBeast's wildest and most extreme video ideas so far. Are your kids fans of MrBeast and his YouTube channel? Let me know what you think of his videos by email: . If you love TV, check out our Screen Babble podcast to get the latest in TV and film. 1 . $456,000 Squid Game in Real Life Even if you hadn't heard of MrBeast before 2021, you definitely heard about his remake of Squid Game at the time. He got real people to compete in a non-lethal version of the Netflix hit. It featured games like Red Light, Green Light, Dalgona and musical chairs. |for Netflix Photo:for Netflix Photo Sales 2 . I Built Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory MrBeast, who now is a chocolate-maker of his own with his Feastibles brand, has in the past recreated Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory in real-life. 10 players had the chance to walk away with the factory at the end of the video, as was the prize in the original book/ film. |for Netflix Photo:for Netflix Photo Sales 3 . I Paid A Real Assassin To Try To Kill Me For $100,000 Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be hunted by a real-life assassin? Well, MrBeast has had that experience. A 'real assassin' had a day to try and stab the YouTube star with a rubber knife to win $100,000. |Photo:Photo Sales 4 . Survive 100 Days Trapped In A Private Jet, Keep It One of the more recent efforts from MrBeast, this video came out in mid-July. He tasked a pilot with staying in a luxurious private jet for 100 days, with the carrot that if he accomplished it, he would get to keep the jet. Not sure I would be able to manage that. | Alberto E. BBC axe critically acclaimed drama after just one series despite plans for future episodes

BBC have surprisingly axed a hit drama on the channel after just one series, despite the creator admitting he had already planned future episodes of the show The BBC have axed a hit show - which was loved by critics - after just one series. Despite the creator revealing he had plans for future episodes of the show, it has been revealed that the BBC will not be renewing the show for another series. ‌ This Town, penned by Peaky Blinders ' creator Steven Knight, was a hit with viewers and critics but the BBC has confirmed it will not be commissioning a second series. The show was set in Birmingham and Coventry and followed the story of four young people who found themselves heavily involved in the 80s music scene. ‌ There had been hopes that This Town would be as successful as Peaky Blinders but it has now been confirmed there won't be a second series. It comes after ITV fans accused Alan Titchmarsh of 'ruining' a garden as foster parents were left sobbing. ‌ Last March, Steven said he had plans for new episodes. He shared: "I certainly have enough ideas for more episodes going forward. I hope we are with these characters for a long time to come." This Town won the Royal Television Society Award for Limited Series or Single Drama last year and amassed 3.2million viewers in its premiere. A BBC spokesperson said: "We're hugely grateful to Steven Knight and the cast and crew for bringing This Town to life — in no small part due to Steven's passion for the West Midlands. ‌ "We look forward to working with him on new projects in the future, and we're in talks about what's next." However, Steven has landed another huge job - he will pen the next James Bond film. It is believed that the new Bond film won't air until at least 2027 or even 2028 but Steven will be kept busy by a special film he is working on around the Oasis reunion tour and he co-created Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? There is also a Netflix feature film adaptation of Peaky Blinders and Netflix historical drama series House of Guinness he is working on, as well as the new Bond movie - which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, which was announced last month. Speaking about his personal connection to This Town, Steven revealed of his inspiration behind the series: "I wanted to do something partly from my own experience, as I grew up in an environment not entirely dissimilar. "The music was around at the time and for us it was 'other', it was different and everyone liked it. I'm not trying to set out to make a political or social point at all, but at this time a particular thing happened where a particular type of music attracted equally black and white people. They danced to and made that music together, not in order to prove a point and not as a consequence of any sort of pressure but because that's just what happened. I thought that was quite an important thing to illustrate."
