Five detainees plead guilty to escaping from Pasir Mas court lockup
Mohd Safiuddin Hanif Mohd, 38, Muhamad Norshamzee Mohd Noresan Shargawi, 32, Mohamad Akmal Mohd Zahari, 31, Mohd Haris Zakaria, 37, and Muhammad Alif Izham Hussim, 23, entered their pleas after charges were read in front of Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid.
Under the first charge, the five are accused of escaping from lawful custody from the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup at 10.20 am, June 22, which is an offence under Section 24 of the Penal Code and can be punished under the same section and read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The five were also charged with breaking into a house with the intent to steal a mobile phone belonging to a woman, 46, at 10.30 am at Kampung Kubang Bongor, Lemal, Pasir Mas on the same date, which is an offence under Section 457 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
In addition, Mohd Safiuddin Hanif was charged under Section 332 of the Penal Code with deliberately causing harm to a police officer at 10.20 am at the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup on the same date.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Syazalia Che Suhaimi while the accused were represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Nur Amira Mat.
Syazalia did not offer bail to any of the accused as Mohd Safiuddin Hanif, Muhamad Norshamzee, Mohd Haris and Muhammad Alif Izham were involved in a drug case at the Pasir Mas Court, while Mohamad Akmal had a previous record of escaping from lockups.
Nur Amira requested for minimum bail on the reason that all of the accused worked as menial workers earning low daily wages of between RM35 to RM50, and most of them had to support parents and schooling children.
The court did not allow bail for all the accused and set August 13 for case re-mention. — Bernama

Stepfather, brother plead guilty to raping 15-year-old girl
The Baling sessions court sentenced the stepfather to 15 months in prison on a separate charge of possessing pornographic pictures and videos on his phone. (Reuters pic) PETALING JAYA : A teenage girl's stepfather and biological brother pleaded guilty in the Baling sessions court to raping her, while her mother was fined RM2,000 in court today for failing to report the offence. Harian Metro reported that all of the accused pleaded guilty after the charges were read before judge Najwa Che Mat. The victim's stepfather, 49, who works as a security guard, was charged with raping the 15-year-old victim in a house in Pulai, Baling, Kedah, around 4pm on June 24. The charge was under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for eight to 30 years' imprisonment and no less than 10 strokes of the cane if convicted. The court granted the stepfather bail of RM30,000 and set Aug 10 as the date for submission of the victim's medical report. The girl's stepfather also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of possessing pornographic pictures and videos in his Vivo Y66 phone at the Baling police headquarters on June 27 at 3.40pm. He was charged under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for up to three years' imprisonment, a fine or both. The court sentenced the stepfather to 15 months in prison from the date of his arrest on this charge. Meanwhile, the victim's brother, 17, was also charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code with raping his sister in the same house, around 10am, on June 15, 2025. The judge set Oct 30 for the submission of a conduct report, and granted the boy bail of RM4,000. According to the facts of the case, the victim was raped by her stepfather and brother since she was 11 years old. At the same time, the victim's biological mother, 45, was charged with failing to report the sexual offence against her daughter to the police, despite having reasonable grounds to believe it had occurred. The charge against her was under Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction. The court imposed a fine of RM2,000 on her, or eight months' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Amirul Halimi Salleh, while the accused were represented by lawyer Masniah Dolah from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

‘Datuk' among 5 charged with unlicensed deposit taking, money laundering
The Shah Alam sessions court set bail at RM100,000 with one surety for each accused and ordered their passports to be surrendered until the conclusion of the case. PETALING JAYA : A woman with a 'Datuk' title was among five people charged today in the Shah Alam sessions court with accepting deposits from the public without a valid licence and laundering millions of ringgit between 2021 and 2024. Suhaila Semaru, 41, her sister Suraya, 37, Noor Syauqi Shafiee, 30, Wahbah Az-Zuhaili Ariffin, 33, and his younger brother Syaabil Ajwad, 26, all claimed trial after the charges were read to them before judge Anas Mahadzir. They were charged separately with money laundering using a company named XFOX Market Sdn Bhd, Berita Harian reported. Suhaila, a director of the company, faces 22 charges in total – five for receiving, 12 for acquiring, and five for possessing proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM13 million. The funds were said to have been deposited into the company's bank account and her personal account. Suraya, who is the company's CEO, was slapped with 10 charges involving acquiring, possessing, and transferring illegal proceeds amounting to approximately RM11.1 million. Syauqi was charged with acquiring and possessing a total of RM2.5 million in illegal proceeds. Wahbah Az-Zuhaili faces seven charges for receiving, acquiring, and using RM10.3 million in illegal funds. Syaabil Ajwad was charged with seven counts of receiving and one count of disposing of a total of RM58 million in illegal funds. The alleged offences took place between November 2021 and July 2024 at multiple bank branches in Shah Alam, Ara Damansara, Kota Damansara, Klang, as well as at a residence and office in Section U5, Shah Alam. The charges were framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. Suhaila, Suraya, and Syauqi also pleaded not guilty to charges of accepting deposits from the public without a valid licence under Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act, read together with Section 249(1)(a) of the same Act. The offence was said to have been committed at XFOX's office in Subang Bestari between November 2021 and July 30, 2024. The judge set bail at RM100,000 with one surety for each of the accused and ordered their passports to be surrendered until the conclusion of the case. Deputy public prosecutors Nurdeenie Abd Rashid and Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Afendi conducted the prosecution while the accused were represented by Haziq Dhiyaudin Razali. The court set Aug 6 for mention of the case.
