Driver of drug-filled stolen car in NYC double-fatal already faced charges from earlier crash: cops, records
The suspect, identified by sources as Autumn Donna Ascencio Romero, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license in the April 13 Brooklyn crash, which reportedly left a 22-year-old pedestrian with injuries including to her face and neck.
Romero was nabbed in that crash the next day with the help of a witness, the Daily News said — only to be dumped right back on the street after her arraignment thanks to the state's bail-reform laws, court records show.
5 A stolen car slammed into two bystanders near the Manhattan Bridge on Saturday morning, killing both.

5 The driver of the stolen car in the fatal wreck was carried off by police after fleeing the scene and getting caught, cops said.

Then around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Romero was behind the wheel of a booze- and drug-filled stolen blue Chevy Malibu when it plowed into a man on a bicycle and a 63-year-old woman on a bench at Bowery and Canal streets in Manhattan, killing both before slamming into an NYPD van, police said.
Romero and her alleged passenger, 22-year-old Kennedy LaCraft, fled the scene but were quickly nabbed nearby, cops said.
LaCraft was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, an NYPD spokesman said.
Charges against Romero were pending, sources told The Post.
5 The speeding car plowed into two people and then into an empty NYPD van in Chinatown on Saturday morning.

5 Police said a man in his 30s on a bicycle and a 63-year-old woman sitting on a bench were both killed in the crash.

The Brooklyn DAs Office did not immediately respond to a Post request for information on the earlier incident, but records show Romero was arraigned and released April 14 with a court date for it Aug. 5.
In the Saturday morning crash, the car had been rented but not returned and thus been reported stolen, police said.
Cops said the car, which was supposed to be returned to Enterprise 17 days earlier, was packed with 'booze and drugs,' including pills, marijuana and a bottle of alcohol, police sources said.
Police did not identify the man killed on his bike, but the other fatal victim was ID'd by her brother as Mary Kwok, 63.
Her sibling, Peter Kwok, told The Post his sister was sitting on a bench when she was struck and killed.
5 The driver of the car, identified as Autumn Donna Ascencio Romero, already had a pending case involving a crash.

'That's her hangout spot,' he said. 'She goes to church in Chinatown.'
He said his sister struggled with mental illness in recent years and would sometimes leave the home in the wee hours.
'I had thought about the scenario, you know, what could happen to her,' Peter said. 'You know, in the city anything can happen like that.'

NYC Midtown shooter Shane Tamura had 2 ‘unresolved' background checks in Nevada prior to deadly rampage: report
The 27-year-old maniac who killed four people at a Midtown Manhattan office tower had two outstanding 'unresolved' background checks that the Nevada Point of Contact Firearms Program never settled, officials said. Gunman Shane Tamura stormed into the 44-story office building in Midtown Manhattan on July 28 and sprayed more than 50 rounds between the lobby and the 33rd floor. During the rampage, Tamura gunned down a Blackstone executive, an NYPD officer, and a security guard in the lobby. On the 33rd floor, he killed the youngest victim, a 27-year-old Cornell graduate, before turning the gun on himself. Obtained by the NY Post The assault rifle he used during the shooting was purchased from his boss at the Horseshoe Las Vegas casino, who completed the sale under the supervision of a gun store in October 2024. That same month, the Nevada Point of Contact Firearms Program determined its background check on Tamura was 'unresolved' — a gray area between approval and outright denial that left a loophole for the would-be mass shooter to keep the firearm. Advertisement A previous background check run by the same program in March 2022 was also 'unresolved,' according to records obtained by 8 News Now. Per federal law, 'unresolved' background checks can permit a purchased firearm to be transferred after three days at the discretion of the license holder. The program is also supposed to conduct research for 90 days in an attempt to reach a firm decision. In both cases, no actual decision was reached for Tamura, who already had a detailed history of rocky mental health issues, including suicidal ideation, psychiatric holds and arrests ahead of both checks. 3 The assault rifle he used during the shooting was purchased from his boss at the Horseshoe Las Vegas casino, who completed the sale under the supervision of a gun store in October 2024. Roughly 3% of all background checks are marked as 'unresolved,' according to department data. AOC campaign denies link to woman charged with 'terroristic threat' against school over Jewish students
The campaign of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., condemned "appalling" antisemitic remarks of a woman arrested for allegedly making threats against a Brooklyn public high school attended by Jewish students, and denied a report that the suspect once worked for them. Iman Abdul, 27, of Brooklyn, was arrested Friday on charges of making a terroristic threat, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated harassment and making a threat of mass harm, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital. The NYPD said it was reported to police on Thursday afternoon that Abdul "made a terroristic threat through social media" towards the Leon Goldstein High School for the Sciences, located in Manhattan Beach, within the confines of the 61st Precinct. Cuomo Supporters Look To Wealthy Enclave To Take Down Mamdani: Report The New York Post was first to report on the case. The outlet obtained screenshots of posts purportedly shared from Abdul's since-deactivated Instagram account. "If anyone needs a public school in NYC to attack for whatever reason… Lexus driving Israhell [sic] loving Zionisits [sic] all attend here," Abdul allegedly wrote, sharing a screenshot from Google Maps of the high school's location. Read On The Fox News App The group Stop Antisemitism and Jewish advocate Uri Cohen both posted Abdul's photo and a screenshot of the post to X, demanding that she be prosecuted over the threats. Online court records show Abdul was arraigned on one count of making a terroristic threat and one count of making a threat of mass harm, pleading not guilty. "A map. A pin. A call to harm Jews, fellow New Yorkers, children, teachers. This isn't just dangerous. It's evil. Jew-hatred doesn't stop with a threat. It escalates. We need immediate and unequivocal action," Tova Plaut, a Department of Education pre-K staffer and Jewish activist, reportedly told The Post. "I am outraged and horrified that a NYC school was publicly marked for attack simply because of its Jewish population." Mamdani's Former Intern Called Activism 'Jihad' And Confronted Police Officers As 'Pigs' In a direct message to Stop Antisemitism, Abdul reportedly defended the post before her account was deactivated. "I never called for an attack on the school in the sense of mass organization or not even individual people attacking individuals, that's literally stupid," she wrote, according to the Post. "I called for an attack on the school, the Zionist institution funded by our public dollars … we have every right to verbally attack the school." Fox News Digital reached out to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office seeking more information on Sunday but did not immediately hear back. The Post was also first to identify Abdul's connection to Ocasio-Cortez's campaign. According to the outlet, Abdul worked on the "Squad" member's Democratic primary campaign as a youth organizer in the summer of 2018. State Sen. Julia Salazar reportedly told the Post that Abdul also worked on Salazar's campaign during that timeframe as a paid canvasser. Ocasio-Cortez's campaign office denied that Abdul was ever a campaign staffer. "This person was never staff on the campaign and any representation of such is false," the campaign said in a statement. "Their comments are appalling and we condemn threats of violence without hesitation." Reached by Fox News Digital, Abdul's attorney, Geoffrey St. Andrew Stewart, declined to comment on the article source: AOC campaign denies link to woman charged with 'terroristic threat' against school over Jewish students Solve the daily Crossword
