How did TSMC find out about the supposed leak?
Taiwanese news sources say that the leak includes "hundreds" of technical photos of process integration that allegedly got to the Japanese chipmaker Rapidus.
Live Events
A current TSMC employee who worked with a former colleague now at
Tokyo Electron
(TEL), a supplier to both TSMC and Rapidus, is said to have sent these pictures, which show important steps in the manufacturing process, as per a report by Tom's Hardware.
TSMC's internal monitoring systems first noticed strange behavior, which led to a more thorough look into the matter. This proved that private information had been shared and accessed. There is no proof that TEL knew about or was involved in the alleged wrongdoing, but the connection between the two people is now a key part of the investigation, as per a report by Tom's Hardware.
What makes 2nm process photos so sensitive?
Process integration photos show how different steps in making a semiconductor chip, like deposition, lithography, and etching, come together to make a working chip. Chipmakers usually keep their designs, materials, and process flows secret, but these visual blueprints can show them off.
For a cutting-edge node like 2nm, these details could lead to new technologies like gate-all-around transistors or more advanced patterning methods. These kinds of pictures probably won't be enough for another company to copy an entire process, but they could help improve manufacturing tools or give insights into a competitor's production capabilities, as per a report by Tom's Hardware.
Could this really help Rapidus?
Rapidus has said in public that it is working with IBM to make its own 2nm-class technology, with the goal of starting mass production in 2027. It's important to note that TSMC and Rapidus process wafers in different ways, which means that the leaked photos may not be very useful for technical reasons.
But in an industry where billions of dollars depend on staying ahead of the curve, even a little bit of information about a competitor's process can be useful for setting standards and making plans. That is why the claims have gotten a lot of attention, even though they haven't been proven yet, as per a report by Tom's Hardware.
Early reports said that as many as six people might be involved, but newer reports say that number is closer to ten. It hasn't been made clear what the leaked images show, so it's still unclear how much damage they could do to TSMC or how much benefit they could bring to Rapidus.
TSMC and Taiwan's Intellectual Property Branch of the High Prosecutors' Office are still looking into it.
FAQs

30 countries hired new lobbyists to negotiate with Trump, Pakistan brought on 7 firms: Report
Countries spent tens of millions this year to lobby with President Donald Trump, a Politico report revealed. Countries have spent tens of millions this year since President Donald Trump's inauguration for lobbying with Washington, though the spending largely has gotten them nowhere, a Politico report revealed, as the countries are now finding their ways through Trump's tariffs. From major trading partners like South Korea and Japan to smaller countries like Bosnia and Ecuador brought on lobbying firms to avoid punishing tariffs. The report said the Pakistani government brought on seven new lobbying firms this year, including "Trump's former bodyman Keith Schiller and George Sorial, the Trump Organization's former compliance chief". Pakistan agreed to pay this firm $50,000 per month and Islamabad managed to lower its reciprocal tariff rate from 29 per cent to 19 per cent, the report said. India brought on longtime Trump adviser Jasim Miller on board in April and inked a year-long contract with Miller worth $1.8 million in exchange for "strategic counsel, tactical planning and government relations assistance". Mexico did not hire any new firm but relied on President Claudia Sheinbaum's direct approach to Trump, the report said. Mukesh Aghi, the CEO of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, told Politico that the current leadership is not doing things in the traditional way. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "I think the current leadership in Washington seems to be disrupting the traditional way of doing things. It's not just about the business part, it's about diplomacy, it's about dealing with other nations," Aghi said. 'I think the whole old model of trying to influence does not seem to work. ' Among the lobbying firms, Mercury Public Affairs signed five new foreign governments since November, including South Korea, Ecuador and Libya. It also lobbies for Japan, but Ballard Partners, another lobbying firm, helped broker a phone call between Trump and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba the day after the election. BGR Group lobbied for Angola and South Korea which saw their tariff rates drop between April and August, the report said adding that the Indian government also paid it $300,000 from December through May. "Even after this week's tariff implementation kickoff, countries and lobbyists are still holding out hope that they can win exceptions or other helpful provisions," the report said.

State pushes jatropha, ethanol to boost green energy
1 2 Patna: With World Biofuel Day falling on Sunday, residents of the city may recall the late President A P J Abdul Kalam's convocation address at Patna University nearly two decades ago in which he urged the promotion of jatropha plantations and rural biofuel enterprises to meet Bihar's energy needs. Delivering his address at the city's S K Memorial Hall on Dec 30, 2005, Kalam recommended using "chour" land (wetlands) for jatropha cultivation. "Biofuel plants grown in 11 million hectares of wasteland can yield a revenue of Rs 20,000 crore a year and provide employment to over 12 million people, both for plantation and running the oil extraction units," he had said. Although Patna University scientists did not initiate a dedicated project to boost the agricultural production of this biofuel plant in the state, agricultural experts identified 13 districts as suitable for cultivation. Farmers in at least Purnia and Kaimur districts are already growing jatropha commercially, according to Patna University botany department head Birendra Prasad. Prasad added that jatropha, known in Hindi as 'Ratan jot', is among the best sources for biodiesel production. "Besides jatropha, other plants like maize and sugar cane are also being used for the production of ethanol. Growing such petro plants on a larger scale can boost the production of biofuels," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo Bihar currently operates 12 ethanol factories, producing a combined 5.65 billion litres, with 60% of output exported to southern states. By 2026, nine new ethanol plants are expected to be established in districts including Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Kaimur, Muzaffarpur, Barh, Jamui, Vaishali and Buxar, according to the state industries department. Recently, the state govt introduced the Bihar Biofuels Production Promotion (Amendment) Policy, 2025, aimed at increasing production of ethanol and compressed bio-gas (CBG) from organic waste materials such as agricultural residue and animal dung. The policy targets pollution reduction and a cleaner environment. Fittingly, the theme for this year's World Biofuel Day is "Biofuels: a sustainable pathway to net zero. " Environmentalist Mehta Nagendra Singh said the policy aligns with Bihar's goal of expanding renewable energy use and contributing to India's net-zero emissions targets. "The policy provides a framework to develop a sustainable biofuel sector in Bihar, attracting investment, creating economic opportunities, and promoting a greener environment," he said. Scorpio natives, this week is generous, family warmth, practical gains, and a run of wins when you balance appetite with discipline. Tuesday brings brightness across love, creativity, and enterprise; students concentrate beautifully, and luck favors smart risks. Midweek sustains momentum with confident work, healthy routines, and recognition; business owners can explore expansion through travel or new markets without losing sight of the numbers. Thursday blends romance with results, good news from children or protégés, credible profits from informed speculation, and smooth cooperation with your spouse. Friday keeps the competence rolling: education and skill work flourish, and you operate with calm command. The weekend tilts social and celebratory, yet it adds two guardrails, health vigilance and financial prudence. Saturday favors bonding (picnics, proposals, gifts), but watch subtle health cues. By Sunday, accept spousal support, focus on savings, and skip speculation.
