State cancels TDR worth 208 cr in Vizag
2
Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh govt has cancelled the controversial transferable development rights (TDR) valued at 208 crore in Revallapalem, Visakhapatnam. The TDR was allegedly issued illegally for land acquired for the construction of an 80-feet road from Madhurawada to Revallapalem via Navodaya school.
Jana Sena corporator P Murthy Yadav said that he had lodged a complaint regarding the issue with the state municipal administration and urban development minister, P Narayana, during the minister's recent visit to Vizag.
"I thank the minister for the prompt response and for cancelling the TDR," said Murthy Yadav.
According to a govt memo issued on June 5, it was initially directed that TDR be considered and issued to property owners for the formation and development of the 80-feet-wide master plan road, namely Bakkannapalem road.
However, following adverse media reports concerning the issuance of TDRs, the GVMC commissioner was requested to re-examine the matter with reference to certain aspects, including ownership, valuation of TDR, and the extent of land affected.
Furthermore, the director of town and country planning, Mangalagiri, submitted that despite repeated directives, GVMC had not yet taken the necessary action. Meanwhile, adverse news reports continue to surface, raising concerns related to govt land involvement and discrepancies in the ground report submitted by GVMC, among other issues. Consequently, state govt has directed the GVMC commissioner to cancel the previously issued TDR and initiate a fresh review by placing the matter before the TDR committee.

NSUI holds demonstration to awaken govt on illegal drug trade
Bhopal: NSUI, the Congress party's student wing, held a demonstration on Wednesday, protesting the state govt's inaction while an illegal drugs factory was operating in Islamnagar, on the outskirts of the state capital. NSUI state vice-president Aditya Soni alleged that the drug trade was flourishing right before the eyes of the state govt, while the police and administration were sleeping. On Monday, the factory was raided by the DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) along with the Surat and Mumbai police. They seized drugs worth Rs 162 crore, including 61.2 kg of mephedrone. A massive amount of raw chemicals was also seized by the DRI. NSUI staged a unique demonstration on Wednesday over the running of a drug factory and the obliviousness of the state govt. NSUI workers beat drums and blew whistles to wake the govt from its deep sleep. Soni said, "The illegal factory was spreading this poison of drugs among the youth and students. No one can even say for how long the drug trade was operating in the state capital. The DRI not only recovered drugs from there but also seized 595 kg of raw material." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is crazy about it Undo Soni argued that it was not just a case of a single drug factory; there are many such cases that have been revealed since October 2024. "Drugs worth Rs 1,800 crores from Gujarat were recovered by the NCB (Narcotics Control Bureau) from Bhopal, apart from which a big racket of smugglers has also been exposed from here," he said. Bhopal NSUI district president Akshay Tomar said the demonstration was a "warning" to the MP govt that if strict action was not taken against the drug dealers and those who protect them, then NSUI would hold bigger agitations on the streets. Cab unions protest exclusion from meet with aggregators
Panaji: Upset about being kept out of a meeting on Goa's transportation sector, Goa's taxi unions staged a silent protest outside the transport department on Wednesday. The unions' members questioned why they were not invited to govt's meeting with Ola and Uber. Given that representatives from app-based taxi aggregators were present at the meeting, taxi union leaders suspect that govt is in talks with Ola and Uber to commence operations in Goa. Transport minister Mauvin Godinho did not deny that app-based aggregators were present at the meeting. However, he said that the meeting was convened by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and public policy consultant, Chase Advisors. 'After deliberations, let's see what recommendations come from them. All industry bodies have supported taxi aggregators. The taxi operators don't want this. They want to go back to the old system, no aggregator, make one trip and sit at home. How long can this go on?' said Godinho. He mentioned that govt would be holding a meeting with local taxi unions in the coming days. The taxi operators questioned CM Pramod Sawant's assurance in the assembly that no app-based services would be granted approval to operate in Goa. 'The transport minister said that he would take strict action against Ola and Uber if they are found operating in the state. To date, no action has been taken against them, but instead, the minister has gone and sat with them for tea,' said one of the taxi operators. They criticised govt for charging hefty fees for the installation of digital taxi meters. 'Digital meters that are available for Rs 3,500 have been installed for Rs 11,500. The minister must publicly explain why this was done. A control room was supposed to be created to monitor the taxis that had installed digital meters. Where is this control room? Why are we made to pay Rs 5,000 every year?' said the taxi operators. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). As many as 45 cr people lose about Rs 20,000 cr annually from real-money gaming: Govt sources
NEW DELHI: Much against the arguments spelt out by gaming companies against the ban on real-money gaming, Govt estimates that around 45 crore people lose close to Rs 20,000 crore every year in online real-money gaming, according to data provided by an official source on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The source said the govt believes that online real-money gaming is turning into a 'major problem for the society', and thus it decided to opt for revenue loss in preference to people's welfare. "There is a rough estimate that 45 crore people lose money every year. The total impact of the loss is estimated to be tentatively around Rs 20,000 crore," the source said, just as the Govt tabled the "Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025" in the Lok Sabha. The Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha, proposes to promote eSports and online social gaming while banning money gaming in any form. "Online gaming involving money has become a major problem for society. Every Parliamentarian has raised concerns about its ill effects. Between revenue from one-third of the industry segment and society welfare, the govt has chosen welfare of society," the source said. According to the source, actions against entities involved in money gaming under the bill will be mainly taken by state govts. The bill proposes that any person offering an online money gaming service in violation of the stipulated provisions will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine that may extend to Rs 1 crore or both. The provisions also stipulate imprisonment of up to two years and or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or both, for those indulging in advertisements in contravention of rules. Several online real-money gaming platforms 'masquerade as game of skills" entities to differentiate themselves from gambling or betting, the source said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Those who play the games are victims. They will not be punished as per the bill, but there will be action on those who provide real-money gaming platforms, facilitate transaction services, etc," the source said. On the other hand, the bill seeks to promote eSports and online social games, which are a part of the creative economy. "There will be a budget for it, schemes and authority for their promotion. They are two-thirds of the industry. It will create job opportunities for the online gaming industry," the source said. Govt has been making efforts for the last three-and-a-half years, which were being bypassed by the real-money gaming players, the source added. 'The govt tried to check it through GST, but it was being bypassed. There was a proposal for a regulatory body, but it was impacted by a conflict of interest. The provisions under the bill were taken after several complaints were received from the public and their representatives," the source said.
