RCB, KSCA must pay ₹1 crore each to stampede victims' families, says Karnataka Minister
Karnataka's Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar on Friday called on the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to provide ₹1 crore each as compensation to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier this week, Deccan Herald reported.
According to the report, speaking to reporters, Hebbalkar said she was deeply affected by the deaths, describing the tragedy as a 'heart-wrenching' incident. 'It is extremely unfortunate that 11 people lost their lives during the celebrations. KSCA and RCB must step up and support the victims' families with meaningful compensation,' she said.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday evening when a massive crowd gathered outside the stadium to catch a glimpse of the IPL-winning RCB team. Poor crowd control and confusion over entry procedures reportedly contributed to the chaos, leaving over 50 injured in addition to the fatalities.
Hebbalkar also took aim at opposition parties, accusing them of politicising the tragedy. 'The opposition is trying to mislead the public. Instead of turning this into a political slugfest, we must focus on understanding the root causes and ensuring such an incident is never repeated,' she said, adding that Congress leaders would respond appropriately to the allegations being made.

Hebbalkar's remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the planning and execution of the RCB victory celebrations. Police have arrested and questioned several individuals, including RCB's marketing head and officials from the event management firm DNA Entertainment. An FIR has also been filed against KSCA, DNA, and RCB.

1 2 Lucknow: Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who was part of India's two World Cup-winning campaigns, on Friday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after a career spanning more than two decades. The Aligarh-born UP player was a member of India's T20 and ODI World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011 under the captainship of MS Dhoni. He represented India in three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, taking 43 wickets across the three formats of the game. The 36-year-old Chawla is also the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, having taken 192 wickets in as many matches in T-20 IPL tenure 2008-2024 while playing for four IPL teams, having won one title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014. Most recently, he played for Mumbai Indians in IPL-2024. This season, he remained unsold at the IPL auction. Bengaluru stampede: RCB official, 3 others sent to judicial custody
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 6 (ANI): A Sessions Court in Bengaluru on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park Police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday). Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court on Friday granted interim relief to the office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), who had approached the court seeking the quashing of the FIR registered against them in connection with the stampede, which claimed the lives of 11 people. In an interim order, the court directed the state police to not take any coercive action against them until further orders. The High Court adjourned the case to June 9. KSCA President Raghu Ram Bhat, Secretary A Shankar, Treasurer ES Jairam, and other KSCA office bearers moved the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. Nikhil Sosale had also approached the High Court challenging his arrest. He claimed that he was arrested without any materials and even before the police had conducted a preliminary enquiry. He has thus sought to declare his arrest illegal. On Thursday, the Bengaluru police registered an FIR against the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., an event management company; and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for culpable homicide, illegal assembly, and other serious charges. A day after the stampede that claimed the lives 11 people, the Karnataka police suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for politicising the recent stampede. His remarks came after the BJP accused the Congress-led state government of making the police a 'scapegoat' in the incident. CM Siddaramaiah said the state government has already taken action against officials who were found to be 'visibly responsible' and 'negligent in their duty.' 'They are doing it for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty,' the Chief Minister said here. (ANI)
