Battle for glory, redemption, European places and surviving relegation — English Premier League returns
After a three-month hiatus the world's most popular league is finally back. The 2025/26 season kicks off on 16 August, with reigning champions Liverpool clashing with Bournemouth. As far as opening fixtures are concerned, it's a fair one for the Reds.
Arne Slot's men are hoping to begin their title defence with the same intensity that marked their march to last season's crown, when they won three matches on the spin to lay down the gauntlet to rivals.
The team that came closest to even mounting some sort of challenge as Liverpool did their best Eliud Kipchoge impression was Arsenal. The Gunners eventually finished a disappointing 10 points behind the English champions, but even that was due to Liverpool slowing down towards the finish line.
Gunners' time?
Arsenal's young but mature team is chasing the club's first league title in more than two decades. Victory in their opening match – against Manchester United – will send a major message about the progress of the process that Arsenal fans have trusted since Mikel Arteta's appointment as manager in 2019.
The process has seen the Gunners finish in second place three times in the past three years. The first two times it was said that the team was still young and inexperienced when it came to competing for league honours.
Last season, Arteta's men would have jumped to the top of a number of people's lists of league contenders when Manchester City crumbled after dominating the Premier League for four successive seasons. Instead, it was Slot's Liverpool that raced to a second national title in the Premier League era.
It feels like this season will be extremely important for Arteta's future. His team has matured, but it still possesses a number of young yet battle-hardened players. Smart acquisitions such as midfielder Martín Zubimendi and Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres have added another dimension to the Gunners. This has piled more pressure on Arteta to finally succeed.
'Well, it's certain he's going to add a different kind of threat and options to score goals from a situation that before we didn't have the opportunity to do so. So, he's a real value there for us,' Arteta said of Gyökeres.
Redemption for Red Devils
Of course, they begin their league campaign against a Red Devils team coming off their worst Premier League season in history. United lost 18 of their 38 league matches in 2024/25, eventually ending the campaign three places above the relegation zone with just 42 points.
Redemption is on Ruben Amorim's mind after his horrific start to life in Manchester. The Portuguese manager replaced Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was dismissed in October 2024 following a poor start.
Things did not improve under Amorim, culminating in the aforementioned conclusion to the Red Devils' campaign.
The United hierarchy – which moved brutally last season, cutting hundreds of jobs as part of a financial restructure – has backed Amorim in the current transfer window.
This is particularly true on the attacking front, where the Manchester club has signed Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško has joined from RB Leipzig. These additions have pleased Amorim as he looks to resurrect a fallen soccer giant.
'[A selection headache] is a good thing. It is supposed to be like that, not like last season that we have to struggle to put 11 players on the pitch. This is the normal thing. So, I need to think and they [the players] need to fight during the week,' Amorim said of the competition for places.
'Things are getting better. But in the end, we need to win games,' the 40-year-old added.
What better platform to announce this serious intent than with a convincing victory over the Gunners on Sunday, 17 August? Especially since all eyes will be on this fixture as the marquee match of round one, season 34.
Frankly spurred on
Despite winning their first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League victory last season, Tottenham Hotspur suffered even more than United in the Premier League. Finishing one place above relegation forced Spurs chairperson Daniel Levy to sack manager Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou has been replaced by Danish tactician Thomas Frank (51), who transformed Brentford into one of the toughest and most exciting teams in the Premier League during his seven-year tenure. Similar is expected of him at Spurs, in a job that has frustrated some of the best managers in soccer history.
Teams such as Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have taken advantage of the slumbering United and Spurs in recent seasons. In 2025/26, they will also again be hungry to prove that their presence in the top six and in European competition is deserved.
Further down the log table, newly promoted Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds United will be out to halt the recent trend of new arrivals being relegated one season after ascending to the top tier of English soccer.
Over the past two seasons the newcomers have departed as quickly as they arrived. Last season, Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town could not fend off the dreaded drop. At the end of the 2023/24 campaign Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley were sent packing. DM

Bayern's Bundesliga crown up for grabs after rocky summer
Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown. Pretenders to the crown Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and cup holders Stuttgart are priming themselves for a run at Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title after a frustrating summer transfer window for the Bavarian giants. Bayern travel to Stuttgart on Saturday for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup — the season opener which pits the defending league champions against the reigning German Cup victors. Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown. This summer, however, the 34-time league champions have not had everything go their own way. Efforts to lure Florian Wirtz away from Leverkusen fell flat, with the German footballer of the year opting rather for a move to the Premier League and Liverpool. Although Bayern secured attacker Luis Diaz from the English champions, they lost Thomas Mueller, Leroy Sane and Eric Dier on free transfers. Kingsley Coman is set for a move to Saudi Arabia, Mathys Tel made his Spurs loan permanent and efforts to sign Germany striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart have been rebuffed. Speaking with the Bundesliga website on Thursday, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the shifting sands across the league this summer made it hard to see who would be their main rivals. 'We'll see who knocks at the top. For us, it will be important to go our own way. We can't influence what the others will do,' Kimmich said. Kimmich nominated former side RB Leipzig to bounce back after a poor 2024/25 campaign, where they missed out on Europe for the first time in the top flight. Midfield conductor Granit Xhaka has also moved to the Premier League, while Germany defender Jonathan Tah has joined title rivals Bayern. The biggest loss of all, however, is coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard departing to join Real Madrid. His replacement, former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, will be looking to revive his own reputation while cobbling together a squad with several new arrivals. Impressive last season in finishing third, Eintracht Frankfurt are also rebuilding, having lost centre-forward Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool in July, just six months after winger Omar Marmoush moved to Manchester City. Quietly building under Bundesliga-winning coach Niko Kovac, Borussia Dortmund could again trouble old foes Bayern this term. Kovac took over the reins in January with Dortmund flailing but helped the club rise from 11th to fourth, picking up 22 of a possible 24 points to end the season. The addition of Jobe Bellingham will provide steel in midfield, while the only major loss is winger Jamie Gittens who moved to Chelsea, having struggled for game time under Kovac. Cup winners Stuttgart, who finished second ahead of Bayern in 2023/24, look set to continue troubling the big guns. Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor told AFP and other media on Thursday: 'We have a very special team… we've got quality players in every position — even some that people haven't heard of.' Karazor said the key man is coach Sebastian Hoeness, who has taken Stuttgart from relegation battlers to cup winners and European football in just over two years at the helm. 'An amazing, amazing coach. You can see his handwriting on everything the team does. From the moment he came in, the mindset of the team changed,' the midfielder said.

Three of the best this weekend: Wins for Pirates, Arsenal, and the Boks?
There's plenty to get excited about in the coming days, with the Premiership starting in England and Dricus du Plessis also in action. What a weekend awaits sports fans in South Africa. There is plenty on offer, from rugby, to cricket, to football and even MMA fighting. Here then are three of our top predictions for the weekend. Orlando Pirates v Mamelodi Sundowns Orlando Pirates have made a poor start to the season under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Buccaneers have lost their first two Betway Premiership matches, leaving them already with a mountain to climb if they are to end Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance in the league. It is Pirates who have a bit of a hold on the MTN8 though, winning the last three editions. On Saturday they host Sundowns in the first leg of the semifinals of this year's competition. If Ouaddou can mastermind a strong performance and a win over Masandawana, then peace will be guaranteed in Orlando, at least for a while. Sundowns have also had their problems at the start of the new season. They haven't lost a game yet, but their performances have been rather underwhelming. Manchester United v Arsenal The English Premier League kicks off this weekend, with the stand out fixture a clash between Man United and Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Rugby Boks v Wallabies It's the first round of the Rugby Championship and the Springboks host Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday evening. The visitors are coming off a decent showing against the British and Irish Lions, losing the series 1-2 but performing well, while the Boks easily beat low-key opposition in June and July. The Boks on the highveld should prove too good for the Wallabies, but this will be a far bigger challenge than what they have faced up to now.
