Oscar-winning megastar unrecognisable in 'ultimate' teen movie on Amazon Prime

Dazed and Confused was a commercial failure at the box office, grossing only $8.25 million worldwide, but has since gone on to become a cult classic and appeared on several lists of the best high school movies
"Alright, Alright, Alright" - few will read this phrase in anything other than Matthew McConaughey 's drawling voice. The breakout performer from the 1993 cult favourite Dazed and Confused, McConaughey appeared blonde and virtually unrecognisable in Richard Linklater's direction.

Despite this coming-of-age comedy earning a disappointing $8.25 million worldwide at cinemas after its September 1993 debut, it has subsequently secured its position on numerous 'greatest high school films ' rankings. Set around the final day of term in a relaxed Texan community in 1976, Dazed and Confused chronicles a collection of secondary school pupils - year 11s progressing to year 12 and year 8s transitioning to secondary education.

The picture observes these adolescents manoeuvring the edge of maturity as they discover themselves immersed in the depths of teenage years in 1970s America. They celebrate, engage in initiation ceremonies, exhibit characteristic youthful defiance and anxiety, and ponder their destinies - all whilst consuming cannabis and drinking substantial quantities of alcohol, reports the Express.

Dazed and Confused showcases an extensive ensemble cast, numerous members of which progressed to become prominent celebrities - including Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, Adam Goldberg, Cole Hauser, Nicky Katt, Joey Lauren Adams, Rory Cochrane, and Anthony Rapp.
Achieving a 94 per cent critics approval rating on review compilation website Rotten Tomatoes, one critic commented about the picture: "Succeeds on its own terms and reflects American culture so well, it becomes part of it." One critic enthused: "The ultimate party movie - loud, crude, socially irresponsible and totally irresistible."

Another review of the film stated: "Once every decade or so, a movie captures the hormone-drenched, fashion- crazed, pop-song-driven rituals of American youth culture with such loving authenticity that it comes to seem a kind of anthem."
With an audience approval rating of 90, Dazed and Confused is also a hit with viewers. One fan gushed, "Amazing movie. One of a kind," while another reminisced, "The best movie when I was a teenager. The start to so many careers. We watched it every day."

A third viewer commented: "I think that even in today's modern age, this is the most realistic depiction of high school boys I've ever seen.
Not in the drugs or parties but the conversations, it really captures how dumb high school conversations are. Besides that, this is Linklater's masterpiece. It's almost hard not to have a good time while watching this. A hilarious film with a great soundtrack and wonderful cinematography, this is just an all around good time."
While one fan wrote: "This movie is capable of transporting the audience back to the 70s and feel a little nostalgia when it ends. Something only a few other titles did with mastery. As many said, the movie says so little, but it says it all."

American visits Poundland for first time and is floored by 'unexpected' discovery

YouTuber The Magic Geekdom visited a Poundland store for the first time and she was blown away by the size of one department as she exclaimed she was "not expecting" it An American YouTube star visited Poundland for the first time and was left stunned by the products on offer in one department. ‌ Cara, who runs t he Magic Geekdom channel which boasts more than 77,000 subscribers, and she updates her followers on her travels around the UK. ‌ One British tradition she had yet to experience was a visit to iconic high street budget store Poundland, but that changed as she updated her fans in her latest video. ‌ It was the size of the clothes department that really shocked Cara as she compared it to a similar US chain called Dollar Tree. She said: "I've never actually gone shopping in a Poundland. There's a whole clothing department I was not expecting. I feel like in the US our Dollar Trees do not have this many clothes. ‌ "I was not expecting a whole section of clothes, like this is huge. Do you see this? This whole clothing section is giving Primark. I'm just curious. I don't think I'm going to buy anything but I did see some slippers I thought were cute. It's so loud in here." Poundland was founded in 1990 and now boast more than 800 stores. The YouTuber spent a significant amount of time in the budget store, perusing the aisles as she compared the products on offer to what one might expect to find in a Dollar Tree store in the USA. ‌ Cara added: "I don't know, I'm going to say, and granted a dollar costs less than a pound. I mean a pound is worth more than a dollar. "These seem like better quality things than you would find at the dollar tree in the US. I think you would be hard pressed to find a set of kitchen utensils for that cheap in the US. The sign says there are over 1,500 items that are a pound or less. ‌ "They do have a little bit of everything here don't they. The car station area, they've got a bike pump." In another video, Cara claimed she had discovered the UK's 'most overlooked city' as a visit there left her stunned. She could not contain her excitement when she went to Leeds. She expressed her surprise at the beauty of the city, highlighting Leeds City Museum as a prime example of the city's allure. The YouTuber said: "This was my very first time in Leeds and it completely blew me away! I didn't know much about the city going in, but after a full day exploring its stunning arcades, fascinating museums, delicious food spots, and lively streets, I can honestly say Leeds is one of the most overlooked cities I've visited so far in the UK. "From beautiful architecture to incredible markets and independent shops, this city has so much to offer."

Netflix adds 'incredible yet devastating' true story film that leaves fans in floods of tears

Netflix fans have been left 'heartbroken' after watching the biopic about a famous wrestling family, starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White. Netflix has added a heartbreaking biopic about a famous wrestling family which has left viewers in floods of tears. The Iron Claw, which features a series of Hollywood stars including Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, tells the devastating story of the Von Erich brothers as they made history in the highly competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. ‌ The 2023 film, which was released in UK cinemas in February 2024, has scored an impressive 89 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and landed on Netflix over the weekend. Zac Efron takes on a leading role as Kevin Von Erich, one of the siblings who achieved fame as a professional wrestler whilst Harris Dickinson plays David, Jeremy Allen White plays Kerry and Stanley Simons plays Mike. ‌ A synopsis for the sports drama reads: "The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s." Despite their wrestling success, the Von Erichs faced endless amounts of tragedy outside of the ring. ‌ The family was struck by a series of tragic deaths, which are depicted throughout the film, with their misfortune becoming known as the 'Von Erich Curse'. The film was already so sad that the director was forced to make the tough decision to leave one major detail out of the film in case it was too upsetting for viewers. ‌ Despite this, Netflix fans have been left highly impressed by the biopic, although they have warned it is a difficult watch. One IMDb reviewer wrote: "The Iron Claw is incredible yet devastating. It's an emotionally haunting film that is going to stick with me for a while." Meanwhile another fan on Reddit wrote: 'This movie completely broke me and I don't say that often but damn. ‌ 'I knew very little about the family going into it but had heard it was based on a true story and depressing. But this movie was more depressing than I had imagined lol especially the last 15 minutes absolutely brutal.' A third added: "Watching the final scene of The Iron Claw and I think someone must have been cutting onions next to me. Seen it like 5 times and it always hits like a punch to the gut." ‌ Referencing the missing detail of the film, another reviewer on Letterboxd wrote: 'Crazy they actually made the story less sad in order to make it more believable.' Throughout the course of the film, tragedy strikes the family multiple times and Kevin is the only brother who lives through it all. ‌ The first is when the Von Erich's older brother, Jack, died at the age of six. How he passed away was one of the many tragic details left out to make the film watchable as Jack was electrocuted by an exposed wire and drowned in a puddle. The next of his brothers to die was David Von Erich, who passed away at 25 on a trip to Japan after health complications caused his sudden death. ‌ Later in the film, Mike and Kerry Von Erich both take their own lives. Mike sadly becomes disabled to due to an in-ring accident and Kerry loses his leg the night he won the family's first World Championship. All of this happened in real life except one major detail was missed out - there was another brother who also died of suicide. ‌ Chris Von Erich was left out of the film with Mike being a combination of the two real life brothers. Chris suffered from asthma and brittle bones but attempt to wrestle anyway, which proved to be a huge fail. ‌ He killed himself with a shot to the head in 1991 at the age of 21. When speaking about the decision to leave out Chris, director Sean Durkin said: 'There was a repetition to it, and it was one more tragedy that the film couldn't really withstand.' He confessed that Chris had been in the script for five years and taking him out was an 'impossible choice.' Durkin stated that Kevin, who is the only son of Fritz Von Erich to live past their 20s or 30s, said he 'understood' when he told him of his decision.

NFL star Travis Kelce wants to ‘do good' with fame from dating Taylor Swift

The 35-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end also said he did not like negative comments that had been made about him since his relationship with Swift, who announced her 12th studio album The Life Of A Showgirl on Tuesday, began. Speaking about increased media scrutiny in an interview with British GQ, Kelce said: 'You can't block that (attention) out. If someone says something that they don't like about you, you have to be able to understand how you are portraying yourself for them to say that. 'I don't want anyone to say anything negative about me. Some people don't give a f***. I'm someone who does care. 'I do want people to look at me like I'm doing good in the world, I'm influencing and using my platform for the better, being a role model, being somebody that has done it the right way.' But Kelce said he was not offended by being dubbed a 'meathead jock', and added he finds it funny and that 'acting like you're the smartest one in the room just isn't the way to go'. He said that as well as being the 35-year-old Shake It Off singer's boyfriend, he was also a 'fan' of her music, and enjoyed seeing her come to his matches. The American footballer went on to speak about Swift's similarities to his mother Donna, adding: 'Their kindness, their genuineness, their ability to say hello to everyone in the room. 'Their ability to show love and support no matter what. And on top of that, their work ethic. I saw my mother reach goals that she had set for herself, go from being a teller to working all the way up in the KeyBank building. 'I've seen Taylor do the exact same thing of setting goals for herself and exceeding the expectations and really captivating the world in that regard.' During his NFL career, Kelce has won three Super Bowls, and hosts the New Heights podcast alongside his brother Jason, who is a retired NFL player.
