Netflix debuted a spooky first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" during the streamer's Tudum event on Saturday, May 31. The latest adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi will transform into Frankenstein's monster.
Isaac's Victor Frankenstein begins the trailer by saying, over a shot of a ship in the Arctic, that he has become determined that "the memory of my evils should die with me." Later, when asked who created the creature, a tortured Victor replies, "I did."
From there, the footage teases scenes of Victor Frankenstein tinkering in his lab, building up to a shot of lightning striking and bringing life to the monster. "In seeking life, I created death," Dr. Frankenstein says, and the movie's tagline declares that "only monsters play God."
The trailer concludes with Frankenstein's monster, whose face is obscured, attacking a group of men on a ship before calling out for his maker, growling, "Victor!" Mia Goth also stars as Victor Frankenstein's fiancée Elizabeth Lavenza, who is briefly seen in the footage.

"Frankenstein" is a passion project for del Toro, the Oscar-winning director of "The Shape of Water" and "Pan's Labyrinth." During an event in January previewing Netflix's 2025 slate, the filmmaker said the movie "has been on my mind since I was a child, for 50 years," and that he has been trying to make it for about 25 years.
"In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with 'Frankenstein,'" he quipped. "And they probably would be right. You see, over the decade, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn't get more personal than this."

"Frankenstein" will be the latest high-profile revitalization of a classic monster story after Robert Eggers' 2024 film "Nosferatu," a remake of the silent movie that was itself an unauthorized adaptation of "Dracula."
"Frankenstein" is set to debut in November.

'Happy Gilmore 2' cast celebrates rapper Eminem's comic chops

Photo courtesy of Netflix NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Adam Sandler and the actors who play his sons in Happy Gilmore 2 are praising rapper Eminem for his surprise comic appearance in the long-awaited movie sequel. "Eminem is funny as hell," Sandler captioned a video of outtakes featuring the hip-hop star that he shared on social media Friday. In the sequel's final golf game, Eminem plays a bucket-hatted heckler, the son of a similar-looking trouble-maker played by the late comedian Joe Flaherty in the 1996 original. Happy (Sandler) ultimately wins, earning the $300,000 he needs to send his only daughter Vienna (Sunny Sandler) to a prestigious Parisian dance school. The actors who played Gilmore's rambunctious adult sons said getting to beat up Eminem and throw him into an alligator-infested pond was a highlight of the movie, which is now streaming on Netflix. "That was a nuts day," pro wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, who plays Happy's eldest son Gordy, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "When I work out, Eminem is my go-to [music] over and over and over again. He has created some of the best pump-up music in the history of music ever, point blank," Friedman said. "So, I'm just standing there and I'm like: 'Wait, I'm beating up Eminem with my closest friends on this random day? OK, sign me up!'" Friedman said the hip-hop icon didn't just film is scene and make a quick exit. "Not only was he a good sport, he stayed way later and he was like, 'Let me try to do a different take and say something different there,' and he improvised so many different lines while he was in the water with the gators," Friedman added. "He's something else." Philip Fine Schneider, who plays Gordy's brother Bobby, chimed in: "He was, literally in the water, which is crazy. I didn't even think he was going to be in the water. I was like, 'Oh, it will be a body double or whatever.' But he was in there and wanted to be in there and wanted to stay. It was great." Friedman said the professional behavior of Eminem and the rest of the big stars who had cameos in the film was a great example for the younger members of the cast. "The big takeaway was the fact that, no matter who the person was that came on to set -- big or small -- everybody put in 110 percent and was just so amped to be a part of the project, so it was really inspiring stuff," Friedman added. Conor Sherry, who plays Terry, said he and the actors who played his siblings were all honored to help carry on the Happy Gilmore legacy. "it was everything," Sherry said. "We had high expectations, obviously. Adam's reputation is so great and he exceeded it in every way. To be able to do something and learn so much is such a joyous [experience,]" he added. "It was a full-fledged master class, more than you could ever learn in any classroom or college. I'm pro-college, but Adam Sandler taught us a lot." "To have such a chill environment and to be able to also learn so much at the same time and have it not feel forced was just really cool," Friedman said. The brothers' constantly fight and talk over each other, but they also are protective of and affectionate with their widower dad and little sister. "They're, basically, just the exact same copies in a certain way. I feel like we all have the same IQ," Ethan Cutkosky, who plays Wayne, said with a laugh. "When we're together, we can collectively solve some math equations." Schneider added, "We're bonded by love. We beat the [expletive] out of each other, but we love each other." "When Happy's down, it's on us to lift our father up," Schneider said. "There are a lot of moments I think will hit home with people, who have parents or parental figures who are struggling," Friedman said. "You get to watch the kids go through the same exact roller coaster that Happy is going through. When he's up, we're up," he added. "When he's down, we're down, but we're rooting for him the entire way through and I think it's such a beautiful thing as far as unconditional love goes." ‘Pride and Prejudice': Everything to know about Netflix's star-studded Jane Austen adaptation as production begins
Production is officially underway on a fresh adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, helmed by Heartstopper director Euros Lyn and adapted by bestselling author Dolly Alderton. The six-part Netflix series boasts a star-studded cast, led by Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (Nosferatu, The Crown) as Elizabeth Bennet and BAFTA winner Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Benediction) as the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. Adding even more prestige to the lineup is Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown), stepping into the role of the spirited Mrs. Bennet. Who's in the cast? In addition to Corrin, Lowden, and Colman, Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat, Scoop) will star as the beloved Mr. Bennet. The Bennet sisterhood will feature Freya Mavor (Industry) as Jane Bennet alongside Heartstopper alumnae Rhea Norwood, as Lydia and newcomers Hollie Avery and Hopey Parish in their debut roles of Kitty and Mary. Louis Partridge will take on Mr. Darcy's nemesis, Mr. Wickham, with Jamie Demetriou turning his hand to the pompous Mr. Collins and Fiona Shaw as the fearsome Lady Catherine de Bourg. Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, a cinematic homage to Jean-Luc Godard and the birth of the French New Wave, is officially arriving this awards season. After earning an 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes this year, the black-and-white period drama will debut in theaters on Oct. 31, before streaming on Netflix starting Nov. 14. Zoey Deutch plays American actress Jean Seberg, delivering a performance already being buzzed about for awards consideration. Aubry Dullin portrays Jean-Paul Belmondo, one of the key figures of the French New Wave. The cast is rounded out by portrayals of Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, prominent contemporaries in Godard's creative orbit. WHO'S BEHIND THE SCENES? Five-time Oscar nominated Linklater (Before Sunrise, Boyhood), directs his first French-language feature and his first Cannes Competition entry since Fast Food Nation (2006). The film is written by Holly Gent, Laetitia Masson and Vincent Palmo Jr. Netflix acquired U.S. rights for a reported $4 million making it one of the most expensive Cannes deals for a foreign-language film. Shot entirely in black-and-white and framed in 4:3 aspect ratio, the film blends vintage French aesthetics with Linklater's signature emotional depth and narrative clarity. During a Cannes press conference for the film in May, Linklater said: "'I felt like I was 28 years-old making this film. I had to erase my experience and get back to my first film mentality. [Making this movie] was like going back in time.' WHAT IS THE PLOT? Nouvelle Vague is a reimagining of the 1959 shoot of Breathless, Godard's debut and a cornerstone of modern cinema. The film dives into the artistic revolutionary choices and the chaos behind the scenes and takes viewers to the streets of Paris in 1959 and examines the relationships among a generation of filmmakers on the cusp of global influence. With jump cuts, handheld cameras, voiceovers and a referential tone, Nouvelle Vague invites viewers into the birth of a revolution in filmmaking. AWARDS CHANCES? Netflix is planning a full campaign, including pushes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay as well as for its stars Deutch, Marbeck and Dullin. It still remains to be seen if the will be submitted by France as its Best International Feature Oscar entry. The film qualifies in nearly every respect (French financing, location, language, and cast) despite having an American director and lead actress. Netflix has a track record for international Oscar winners like Roma and All Quiet on the Western Front, positioning Nouvelle Vague as a serious contender.
