Ben Johnson teases big change ‘tailored around' Caleb Williams
The future of the Chicago Bears is partly on the shoulders of Caleb Williams. With the season approaching, the Bears have gotten some positive results from Williams during camp.
Altogether, the Bears are looking to turn the page from a chaotic season. A season in which Williams was seen as an underachiever in his rookie year, though he was putting up decent numbers.
Recently, Bears coach Ben Johnson lead in on what to expect from Chicago this year, per Harrison Graham of Chat Sports. Johnson said that the offense will be run in a way that best utilizes Williams to maximize his strengths.
'This is going to be, I like to fancy it, the quarterback's offense,' Johnson said. 'We're going to tailor this right around Caleb Williams. It will not necessarily be what you've seen from the last three years. We're going to find out precisely what our quarterback does well, and that's really what we are going to anchor on. '
Since being hired, Johnson has spoken highly of Williams. All this against the backdrop of reported disconnect from Williams towards the organization. An upcoming book, 'American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback,' by Seth Wickersham, claimed that Williams and his father conspired to keep him from going to Chicago. This is allegedly due to how the Bears treat quarterbacks, and Williams wanted to play for the Minnesota Vikings.
However, Johnson and Williams have collectively refuted those claims.
Ben Johnson believes in a top-down approach for the Bears
Johnson is an offensively oriented coach. He was like that with the Detroit Lions and wants to duplicate that approach with the Bears. Therefore, he is emphasizing Williams for a reason.
He is fully aware of Williams' strengths and athleticism. He can pass as well as run, fitting for the model quarterback of the present day. Even with all the scrutiny, Williams managed to accumulate 3,541 passing yards as well as 20 touchdowns. Williams finished the year with a 62.5% pass completion rate and an 87.7 QB rating.
If Williams can excel those numbers and the offensive line holds it together, things could turn for the better.

The Valkyries went on to win 77-75, but this incident was the biggest talking point after the game. As if this happening once wasn't bad enough, it happened again just a few days later. Another green sex toy was thrown under the basket during the third quarter of the Valkyries' 73-66 win over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Friday. The officials immediately stopped play this time around, and the object was quickly taken away. It has been confirmed that it wasn't the same individual who committed both of these acts. It's unclear if the second individual has been identified. Following this incident at the Sky-Valkyries game, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham took to X to ask fans to stop throwing objects on the court. "Stop throwing d***** on the court… you're going to hurt one of us." New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison, meanwhile, stated on X that security has to be better at arenas. "ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please do better. It's not funny. never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous." The fact that two such incidents have taken place suggests that stronger security measures are needed at WNBA games. The Chicago Bears have high hopes for their offense this season with the arrival of head coach Ben Johnson and improvements along the offensive line. While quarterback Caleb Williams' development is key, he won't be able to thrive without a strong running game. D'Andre Swift was brought in as a free agent ahead of last season, but he hasn't been as productive as they hoped coming in. Roschon Johnson, who the Bears selected in the 2023 NFL draft, is a solid back, but he hasn't proven himself to be a number one either. In the 2025 NFL draft, Chicago selected Kyle Monangai in the seventh round to join the running back room. He was seen as the third guy on the depth chart ahead of camp, but that may not be the case as the season progresses. Head coach Ben Johnson seems to have a plan for the rookie. 'I'm very pleased with where he's at,' Johnson said after Family Fest. 'I think he's a guy we're gonna be able to trust this fall.' Does this mean that Johnson doesn't trust Swift or Johnson? Of course not, but it does mean that he plans on using Monangai, perhaps more than anyone thought. Having three running backs contributing isn't necessarily conventional in the NFL, but the Bears could make it work. Nobody has made the case to be the undisputed top running back since coming to Chicago, and Johnson is ready to try to get the most out of every player. When Johnson was the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, he found success with Jared Goff throwing the football.
