As training camp looms and roster battles get underway, the Philadelphia Eagles could be monitoring Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II as a potential trade target. A standout at Northwestern, Newsome earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2020 before being selected 26th in the 2021 NFL Draft. Newsome made an immediate impact in Cleveland, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team while showing flashes of elite potential. He recorded career-best numbers in 2023, recording 14 pass breakups, two interceptions, and allowing a 74.8 passer rating when targeted.
Despite that breakout season, 2024 marked a downturn. After Cleveland exercised Newsome's fifth-year option, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski shifted him down the depth chart, favoring Martin Emerson Jr. in his place. Newsome started just three games last season and dealt with a hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve. The Browns shopped Newsome ahead of this year's draft, but no deal materialized.
For the Eagles, Newsome's ability to play both inside and outside corner is enticing. Per Pro Football Focus, Newsome has logged 1,428 snaps on the outside and 1,163 at nickel throughout his career, offering Fangio the kind of schematic flexibility his defense thrives on. Newsome could immediately challenge for a starting role or serve as a high-end rotational piece. Philadelphia is scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Browns on August 13, which could serve as a live audition for Newsome in front of the Eagles' coaches.
The roster is well-positioned financially to absorb Newsome's guaranteed $13.3 million salary for next season, and at just 25 years old, the former first-round pick still has room to develop. For an Eagles' team intent on repeating as Super Bowl champions, Newsome represents a rare combination of youth, talent, and versatility.

Mark Kaboly, an insider covering the team, spoke out with a brief update about the situation. He believes that Pittsburgh is still listening to a potential deal with the Dolphins. "I bet you, they're listening," Kaboly said. Adding another cornerback is a major priority if the Steelers decided to make an outside move. They were connected to Jaire Alexander after the Green Bay Packers released him and are obviously still being connected to Ramsey. Ramsey is now 30 years old. While he may not be the elite superstar that he once was, he proved during the 2024 NFL season that he's still capable of playing a high-impact role. In the 17 games he played with Miami, Ramsey racked up 60 total tackles to go along with a sack, two interceptions, and 11 defended passes. While it is highly possible that Pittsburgh won't get any kind of deal done with the Dolphins, it is a team to watch. Outside of Philadelphia, the play has generated a lot of complaints from fans, players, coaches, and owners, as there's been a consistent argument about the play not being a "football play." Some have also cited player safety as a concern, although concrete evidence of the play being dangerous to players' health has not been provided through arguments. In Johnson's opinion, the players who are directly in the mix on both sides of the ball during the play would need to be the ones to speak up if they feel it is a true safety concern. Centers, guards, and nose tackles are typically facing a lot when the play goes down. And when it comes to the Eagles, they have a lot of size in that area, which is what makes the play so successful for Philadelphia, in the eyes of Johnson. "I credit the size that we've had in the middle for these last few years," Johnson explained. "[Jordan] Mailata is really good at it. I'm OK at it, but it's really, we got a lot of heavy squatters." According to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles have run the most quarterback sneaks in the NFL since 2021. The Buffalo Bills were next in line, with a difference of 39. While the Eagles have a high success rate of 83 percent on the play, the Bills had a slightly higher conversion rate at 84 percent. It's not automatic, but teams have had a very difficult time preventing the Eagles from converting in critical short scenarios. While the fight against it was strong, it ultimately failed. Johnson doesn't seem confident the "tush push" is here to stay, but the Eagles will surely keep it near the top of their playbook as long as it's legal to run it.
