Trade Buzz: Eagles could look to add a former Browns first-round pick
Eagles could look to add a former first-round pick to their talented secondary
As training camp looms and roster battles get underway, the Philadelphia Eagles could be monitoring Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II as a potential trade target. With questions lingering in the secondary, particularly at the second cornerback spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell, the Eagles could be evaluating ways to add depth to their secondary.
Kelee Ringo is currently locked in a camp battle with veteran Adoree' Jackson for the No. 2 cornerback role, while Cooper DeJean has solidified his place in the slot. However, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is known for valuing multifaceted defensive backs, and Newsome's skillset fits that profile.
A standout at Northwestern, Newsome earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2020 before being selected 26th in the 2021 NFL Draft. Newsome made an immediate impact in Cleveland, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team while showing flashes of elite potential. He recorded career-best numbers in 2023, recording 14 pass breakups, two interceptions, and allowing a 74.8 passer rating when targeted.
Despite that breakout season, 2024 marked a downturn. After Cleveland exercised Newsome's fifth-year option, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski shifted him down the depth chart, favoring Martin Emerson Jr. in his place. Newsome started just three games last season and dealt with a hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve. The Browns shopped Newsome ahead of this year's draft, but no deal materialized.
For the Eagles, Newsome's ability to play both inside and outside corner is enticing. Per Pro Football Focus, Newsome has logged 1,428 snaps on the outside and 1,163 at nickel throughout his career, offering Fangio the kind of schematic flexibility his defense thrives on. Newsome could immediately challenge for a starting role or serve as a high-end rotational piece. Philadelphia is scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Browns on August 13, which could serve as a live audition for Newsome in front of the Eagles' coaches.
The roster is well-positioned financially to absorb Newsome's guaranteed $13.3 million salary for next season, and at just 25 years old, the former first-round pick still has room to develop. For an Eagles' team intent on repeating as Super Bowl champions, Newsome represents a rare combination of youth, talent, and versatility.

Eagles' Loss Predicted To Be a Huge Gift For Patriots

One of their key defensive linemen from the Super Bowl season managed to hit the open market and secure a deal to become a major investment for the New England Patriots. Milton Williams showed a lot of promise in Philadelphia, despite starting in fewer than 20 games over the course of four seasons. With the Patriots, Williams will see a a role increase, as he inked a reported $104 million contract for the next four seasons with the Patriots. As New England prepares for its run with the new defensive lineman, the ex-Eagle is gaining attention as a "guaranteed riser," according to NFL analyst Marc Ross. "It can be risky paying part-time players big-time money like the Patriots did this offseason with Williams," Ross writes. "He will be tasked with turning around a defense that ranked 22nd in yards and points allowed in 2024. ... it's clear early on that Vrabel is looking for Williams to set the tone in his revamped D-line. He brings the experience to a front that features some young but talented disruptors." Since 2021, Williams has played in fewer than 50 percent of the Eagles' defensive snaps each year. He saw the field for a career-high 501 (48%) during the 2024 NFL season. In 17 games, Williams registered 24 tackles, with seven of them going for a loss. He landed 10 hits on the quarterback and picked up five sacks during the regular season. While the Eagles will miss their former homegrown prospects, the team feels confident in the growth of the others on the frontline, which is headlined by the dominant Jalen Carter. Steelers, Jalen Ramsey Trade Rumors Receive Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to go all-in on competing for a Super Bowl this season. That much was made clear when they signed future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal. With the move for Rodgers official, the Steelers have been mentioned in another big-time rumor. Miami Dolphins star cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been rumored to be on the trade block. He has been connected as a possible target for the Steelers as well. Jalen Ramsey #5 of the Miami Dolphins is introduced prior to a game against the New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium on October 29, 2023 in Miami Gardens, Florida. The team could use more help in the secondary and Ramsey is arguably the best player available. Read more: Browns Urged to Consider Bizarre Trade Target A new update has been given about the rumors connecting the Steelers and Ramsey. Mark Kaboly, an insider covering the team, spoke out with a brief update about the situation. He believes that Pittsburgh is still listening to a potential deal with the Dolphins. "I bet you, they're listening," Kaboly said. Adding another cornerback is a major priority if the Steelers decided to make an outside move. They were connected to Jaire Alexander after the Green Bay Packers released him and are obviously still being connected to Ramsey. Ramsey is now 30 years old. While he may not be the elite superstar that he once was, he proved during the 2024 NFL season that he's still capable of playing a high-impact role. In the 17 games he played with Miami, Ramsey racked up 60 total tackles to go along with a sack, two interceptions, and 11 defended passes. Read more: Chiefs Linked to Potential Trade for Future Travis Kelce Replacement Back in the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Rams, he totaled 88 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, four interceptions, and 18 defended passes. If Pittsburgh does want to make another all-in move, Ramsey would be the move to make. He would fix a huge need for the Steelers and would give them a true No. 1 cornerback to go up against the NFL's elite wide receivers. While it is highly possible that Pittsburgh won't get any kind of deal done with the Dolphins, it is a team to watch. The Steelers are without a doubt a key player in the Ramsey sweepstakes and it'll be interesting to see if they decide to get aggressive once again. Eagles Star Delivered Thoughts On NFL's Failed Ban Attempt
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. For a brief moment, it seemed the Philadelphia Eagles' infamous "tush push" play was set to see its conclusion. As the Green Bay Packers led a group of teams who attempted to have the play removed from the NFL, it all went to a vote recently. It was close, but as Lane Johnson said, the play lives to see another day. Johnson, a prominent player on the Eagles' offensive line, recently spoke about the play that has drawn a lot of praise and criticism for the Eagles. "It's wild for a QB sneak—something that's been around for a long time—and if it was eliminated, it wasn't going to hurt just us," Johnson said on 'The Rich Eisen Show.' "There are other teams. I feel like the Bills are really good at it, and there are teams that will eventually get good at it. It lives at least another year. It was very close, and it was something I thought may have been taken away, and it still might very shortly. As somebody that's involved in the play, I never thought this would grow into what it has become." Lane Johnson (65) of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates with owner Jeffrey Lurie after Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 09, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Lane Johnson (65) of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates with owner Jeffrey Lurie after Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 09, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Eagles defeated the Chiefs 40-22. MoreFans of the Eagles have embraced it, even calling it the "Brotherly Shove," as it's nearly become an automatic first-down in short third or fourth down situations. Outside of Philadelphia, the play has generated a lot of complaints from fans, players, coaches, and owners, as there's been a consistent argument about the play not being a "football play." Some have also cited player safety as a concern, although concrete evidence of the play being dangerous to players' health has not been provided through arguments. In Johnson's opinion, the players who are directly in the mix on both sides of the ball during the play would need to be the ones to speak up if they feel it is a true safety concern. Centers, guards, and nose tackles are typically facing a lot when the play goes down. And when it comes to the Eagles, they have a lot of size in that area, which is what makes the play so successful for Philadelphia, in the eyes of Johnson. "I credit the size that we've had in the middle for these last few years," Johnson explained. "[Jordan] Mailata is really good at it. I'm OK at it, but it's really, we got a lot of heavy squatters." According to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles have run the most quarterback sneaks in the NFL since 2021. The Buffalo Bills were next in line, with a difference of 39. While the Eagles have a high success rate of 83 percent on the play, the Bills had a slightly higher conversion rate at 84 percent. It's not automatic, but teams have had a very difficult time preventing the Eagles from converting in critical short scenarios. While the fight against it was strong, it ultimately failed. Johnson doesn't seem confident the "tush push" is here to stay, but the Eagles will surely keep it near the top of their playbook as long as it's legal to run it.
