Sarawak's Self-reliant Infrastructure Surge Sets It Apart From Federally Dependent Sabah

LABUAN, June 25 (Bernama) -- Despite sharing similar geographies and economic aspirations, Sarawak and Sabah have taken markedly different paths in infrastructure development.
Former President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Malaysia and vice-president of CILT International for Southeast Asia, Datuk Dr Ramli Amir, said Sarawak has emerged as a model of self-reliance, independently funding large-scale infrastructure projects.
At the same time, Sabah remains heavily dependent on federal allocations, resulting in development delays and fragmented logistics.
'Over the past decade, Sarawak has allocated billions of ringgit toward roads, bridges, ports, and industrial zones, all without resorting to debt or federal funding.
'The state government's fiscal discipline and adoption of innovative financing, including an alternative funding model introduced in 2019, have enabled accelerated infrastructure rollout.
'Sarawak's commitment to strategic financial management is exemplified by the RM11 billion invested in ten bridges, executed without external borrowing,' he said in a statement to Bernama today.
Ramli said the decision to replace the Infrastructure Development Trust Fund with a unified modern financing mechanism highlights the state's focus on project efficiency and accountability.
He added that political stability and a long-term vision have also enabled Sarawak to maintain consistent development through initiatives such as the Coastal Road Network, the Second Trunk Road, deep-seaports, and free industrial zones.

Sabah's First Locally Developed e-Hailing App Borneo VeGO Launched
By Jailani Hasan KOTA KINABALU, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Sabah's first locally developed e-hailing application, Borneo VeGO E-Pengangkutan (Borneo VeGo), has been officially launched, marking a new milestone in the state's journey towards digital innovation and community-driven entrepreneurship. The launch was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajij Mohd Noor, yesterday in the presence of cooperative leaders, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders Cooperative of Borneo Transport Entrepreneurs (KUPBB) advisory chairman Rosli Awang Damit said Borneo VeGO was more than just a transportation service. Built under KUPBB, the app is a digital entrepreneurship platform designed to empower local communities. 'Borneo VeGO is not just an e-hailing app. It is a symbol of modern cooperative strength, developed with the spirit of togetherness, fair income distribution, and shared benefits. In terms of functionality, effectiveness, and user comfort, Borneo VeGO can stand alongside global players such as Grab,' Rosli said in a statement to Bernama. He explained that, unlike conventional platforms, Borneo VeGO was created to ensure fairer commission structures and to allow more local drivers, particularly those from rural areas, to participate in the digital economy without depending on external companies. Beyond transport, Rosli said the app also includes food and beverage delivery as well as daily essentials, opening new opportunities for small traders, night market vendors, and traditional food entrepreneurs. 'This initiative will inject fresh momentum into Sabah's micro, small and medium-sized enterprises,' he added. Rosli said the launch was only the beginning, as KUPBB plans more collaborations, training, and incentives to enable more Sabahans to participate and benefit from this digital transformation. M'sian woman allegedly misled by drugstore cashier after paying for additional RM11 item
A Malaysian woman recently claimed she was deceived at a popular drugstore chain located in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) after an item was added to her purchase without explanation. 'Is one of the requirements for working there to fool customers?' she asked in a TikTok video. She had entered the drugstore to buy an eye wash solution, which was discounted from RM35 to RM27. After selecting the item, she proceeded to the cashier to make her purchase and allegedly discovered that the cashier had added another item worth RM11, without her full understanding. When the item was included, the woman assumed the cashier was 'trying to help her' by offering it as part of a promotional tactic. She further explained that the drugstore often runs a 'purchase-with-purchase' promotion, where customers can buy an additional item at a discounted price alongside their main purchase. Typically, the promotion is explained clearly by the staff. 'I thought the cashier was trying to help me because she just scanned the item immediately. She said it was really cheap now at RM11, so I thought, 'Wow, she's trying to help me,'' she said, adding that she initially believed both items together cost only RM11. The woman admitted that she hurriedly paid for both items without properly checking the total amount charged, as she was rushing to catch her e-hailing ride. While she was paying, she further alleged that the cashier's colleague remarked how easy it was to convince a customer to purchase the item – to which the cashier allegedly replied confidently that it was indeed 'that easy'. 'Only then did it click in my mind that I was probably scammed, but since I was in a rush to get to my ride, I just left,' she added. She later checked the receipt and found that she had spent a total of RM42.15. 'I'm not mad because I paid an extra RM12, but you literally fooled me – and you were proud of it,' she said. The woman also claimed the cashier told her colleague to call the next customer to the counter so the same tactic could allegedly be used again. Netizens encouraged the woman to file a report with the relevant authorities, while some criticised her for not being more alert during the transaction and warned her to be more cautious in the future. Meanwhile, other commenters explained that the staff are often required to meet certain sales targets by introducing different sales promotions, but agreed the cashier was in the wrong.
