Mamelodi Sundowns block Terrence Mashego exit
Mamelodi Sundowns have triggered the contract extension clause for left-back Terrence Mashego, even as interest from Stellenbosch FC intensifies. The move comes amidst mounting speculation about Mashego's dissatisfaction at the club due to a lack of consistent game time.
The 29-year-old joined Sundowns in September 2022 and has clocked 45 appearances across all competitions. Yet, this season he has featured in only 13 matches, a sharp decline that has reportedly cost him his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.
Coach Miguel Cardoso has consistently preferred Aubrey Modiba at left-back. Modiba, who also secured a contract extension recently, has made 34 appearances this season. Meanwhile, Divine Lunga has also had his contract extended and managed 16 outings across all competitions.
This trio of contract renewals signals Sundowns' intention to retain depth in their defensive unit, but it has pushed Mashego further down the hierarchy.
With Stellenbosch FC aware of Sundowns' ongoing interest in their star defender Fawaaz Basadien, they may be preparing for his possible departure. Mashego, a Mamelodi native, has reportedly emerged as their top target.
A source confirms the left-back is open to a move, particularly with the lure of CAF Confederation Cup football proving enticing.
'Remember Chiefs wanted Mashego after they thought they couldn't get Basadien at that time but now Stellies are first in line it looks,' said the source.
Stellenbosch's historic run to the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals has put them on the map, and they are eager to reinforce their squad with experienced campaigners like Mashego.
Earlier in January, Kaizer Chiefs reportedly made a bid for Mashego. However, their offer failed to meet Sundowns' expectations. The Brazilians appear unwilling to strengthen their Soweto rivals, closing the door on any potential move to Naturena.
Should Mamelodi Sundowns keep Mashego or let him join Stellies?

Kaizer Chiefs hijack transfer in dramatic u-turn from Sundowns
Kaizer Chiefs are on the brink of pulling off a sensational coup in the transfer market, overtaking Mamelodi Sundowns in the race to sign highly-rated Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum, despite the latter offering a more lucrative package. In a twist few saw coming, Chiefs have emerged as the likely destination for the Azam FC star, with a source close to the deal suggesting Salum is now favouring a move to Naturena. While Sundowns may have flexed their financial muscle, it appears the Glamour Boys' personal touch has made all the difference. Chiefs and Sundowns have both shown strong interest in Salum. But the momentum has shifted thanks to a strategic visit to Tanzania by Kaizer Chiefs officials. A move that reportedly swayed the player's decision. 'The visit to Tanzania by Kaizer Chiefs' officials has changed most of the things concerning Feisal Salum's move to South Africa,' a source revealed. 'At the moment it's believed that the involved parties concerning the player's personal welfare and needs have been agreed upon. Apparently, the presence of coach Nabi in Tanzania helped that a lot. It's as good as done as far as the player agreeing to join Chiefs is concerned.' In a clever move to sweeten the deal. Chiefs plan to include their goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari in the transfer deal. Azam FC reportedly admire the Rwandan shot-stopper, which makes the offer significantly more appealing to the Tanzanian club. This strategic inclusion signals just how serious Chiefs are about landing Salum. And how far they're willing to go to outmanoeuvre Sundowns. While money often talks in high-stakes transfer battles, this case highlights the importance of club culture, vision, and relationships. Salum is believed to be impressed by what Kaizer Chiefs are building and feels aligned with their football philosophy. Will Salum be the main man Kaizer Chiefs were looking for? Broos urges Bafana newbies to grab their chance in friendlies
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has urged the new players called up to his squad for this month's friendlies to grab the opportunity and impress him. Bafana meet Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday (7.30pm) and Mozambique at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria next week on Tuesday. With Mamelodi Sundowns' players not called up as they are preparing for the Fifa Club World Cup, Broos named a number of new faces plus fringe players in need of game time in his squad. He said he will give all his new players an opportunity in the two games. 'It is a great opportunity for the new players and also the young ones, there is no pressure. We are playing friendly matches, so the results are not that important,' Broos said in a press conference in Polokwane on Monday. 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗢 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗦 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗣𝗢 Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he is happy that both the upcoming Bafana Bafana International friendly matches will be played at New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. South Africa will host Tanzania 🇹🇿 on Friday, 6… — Limpopo Chronicle (@LimChronicle) June 2, 2025 'From my side, I will give every player the same playing time. It is a bit difficult for goalkeepers, but even for them, we will try every keeper to play the same minutes and have a good camp. 'We will then make a good evaluation after the week. The performance is the most important thing, so surely we want to win the two games. But more important is the performance of the players, certainly the new ones. 'I will not put pressure on them; they just have to play their game and we will evaluate what we are going to do in the future.' Broos reiterated he will retire after the 2026 Fifa World Cup, citing being tired of working daily. His contract with Bafana will end next year. 'I'm nearly 40 years in coaching and I'm 73. There has to be one moment where you have to stop,' he said. 'I will not die on the bench. Next year after the World Cup is finished [I will leave]. Since I was 19, I've been in football, first as a professional player and then as a coach. 'When I stop next year, I can be at home with my wife. You'll never know if I can be an adviser for South Africa or another team, but I don't want to work every day anymore. 'We will see next year; my focus is on [the World Cup qualifiers in] September and October. Hopefully we can qualify for the World Cup and this is my focus.' Among the new faces, Orlando Pirates' talented young striker or midfielder Simphiwe Selepe, 20, winger Mohau Nkota, 20, and centreback Mbekezeli Mbokazi, 19, will be looking to impress Broos.
