Sharjah school team clinches victory in Greenpower Endurance Race - Middle East Business News and Information
Dubai, UAE: A team from the International School of Choueifat, Sharjah secured victory in the Greenpower UAE Grand Prix, an endurance race that brought together students from across the country to compete with electric vehicles built in the classroom.
The winning team, VoltStar, combined to complete 79 laps of the Yas Kart Zone track at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit yesterday, three more than their nearest rivals, the Leopards team from GEMS Dubai American Academy
Finishing third after clocking up 74 laps were the Immortal Speedsters from GEMS Winchester School Fujairah.
A total of 13 teams of 12 competed in the second edition of the event, all aiming to complete as many laps as possible in 90 minutes, with two driver changes allowed. Each team designed and built the electric kit cars as part of their studies.
'The kids had a fantastic opportunity showcasing their abilities and passions in a non-strictly academic setting,' said Physics Department teacher Davide Farina, who oversaw the project for the winning team. 'They're passionate and brilliant and I am so proud of them.'
Ali Shaltoni, who shared the driving with Yasir Al-Guburi and Yazen Al-Guburi for the VoltStar team, said: 'Driving in the Greenpower race wasn't just about speed. It was about strategy, precision, and trust in the engineering. Every turn reminded me that teamwork and preparation make the win possible.'
The other team members were Yara Alimam, Abdulhayee Yamin, Jameel Khan, Srinjay Shrinivas Shankar, Yousef Saleh, Maya Alaeek, Mariam Habib and Muhammad Areeb Muhammad.
The race was organised by automotive events agency and motorsports consultants Pole Position, which runs the Green Power programme in the UAE, with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure as its strategic partner.
The programme aims to inspire students to explore careers in motorsport and electric vehicle engineering, while highlighting the importance of sustainability and reducing emissions.
'Our mission began with a passion for fostering sustainable motorsports and providing career pathways for young talent in automotive engineering,' said Ryan Trutch, CEO and Founder of Pole Position.
'Ultimately, it was very rewarding to see 168 fully-committed students giving everything on the day, and we look forward to continuing with the development our non-profit programme. Our goal is to welcome at least 50 new schools each year, and with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, we're confident of achieving this target.'
His Excellency Eng Fahad Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Support Services Sector at MoEI, said: 'One of the key priorities for the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is to empower the next generations of innovators and sustainability champions, and we congratulate everyone who took part in the Grand Prix.
'The Greenpower Programme is an initiative that gives youngsters the opportunity to become part of the solution to global challenges. We encourage more schools to participate next year and open the door for their students to embrace innovative thinking.'
The Greenpower UAE Grand Prix was also sponsored by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, Aggreko, Peec Mobility, and One Allsports, and Trutch is keen to develop more corporate CSR partnerships to achieve the programme's long-term goals.

Formula One: Hamilton calls himself 'useless,' suggests driver change at Ferrari - Omni sports
Lewis Hamilton called himself 'absolutely useless' and suggested Ferrari should change drivers after he qualified 12th for the Hungarian Grand Prix and teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position. It was a new low in a difficult first season with Ferrari for seven-time Formula 1 champion Hamilton, who qualified outside the top 10 for the second race in a row. "I'm useless, absolutely useless," Hamilton told British broadcaster Sky Sports. 'The team have no problem. You've seen the car's on pole. So, they probably need to change driver.' Hamilton had said 'every time, every time' over the radio after he was eliminated in the second part of qualifying. That signified that 'it's me every time,' he clarified to Sky later. Qualifying problems continue Hamilton had earlier seemed set to qualify 13th, and he was only promoted to 12th after the second part of qualifying had finished. That was because Kimi Antonelli's time was struck out after it was noticed the Mercedes rookie had gone outside the track limits. It was the second week running that Hamilton had been frustrated with his qualifying performance. He qualified 18th for the sprint race in Belgium last week after a spin, and 16th for the Grand Prix when one of his times was struck out. Still, Hamilton delivered one of his best drives of the year, cutting through the field on a wet track, and eventually finished seventh. A long first year at Ferrari After a move from Mercedes which stunned F1 last year, Hamilton has yet to finish on the podium in a Grand Prix race with Ferrari, with a best finish of fourth. He did win a sprint race in China in March, but a double disqualification for technical infringements on Hamilton and Leclerc's cars in the Chinese Grand Prix the next day required a time-consuming rethink of Ferrari's race setups. Leclerc is fifth in the standings, only one position ahead of Hamilton, but has five podium finishes in 2005. In Sunday's race, he'll aim to give Ferrari its first F1 win since October. Last week, Hamilton said it was 'crunch time' and revealed he's been holding a series of meetings with Ferrari executives to discuss improvements and ensure he has more of a say in how the team develops its car for the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026. Formula One: Ferrari renews team principal Vasseur's contract despite difficult season - Omni sports
Ferrari handed team principal Fred Vasseur a new contract on Thursday in a sign of 'trust in Fred's leadership' following speculation about his future, with the Italian team yet to win a Formula 1 race in 2025. In an announcement ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari said the new deal was a 'multiple-year contract,' without giving further details. Lewis Hamilton gave Vasseur his backing last month after reports in Italian media suggested his job could be in question. Ferrari last won a race in October and, while it's second in the constructors' championship behind McLaren, neither Hamilton nor Charles Leclerc has consistently been able to challenge the leading McLaren drivers this year. 'Today we want to recognize what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,' Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna said in a statement. 'It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership — a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility. We move forward with determination and focus, united in our pursuit of the level of performance Ferrari has to aim for.' Vasseur joined Ferrari as team principal at the start of 2023. He was Hamilton's team boss in junior series in the mid-2000s and played a role in convincing the seven-time champion to leave Mercedes for Ferrari for 2025 in a move which shook up F1. Vasseur also previously worked with Renault and Sauber in F1. Hamilton, who hasn't finished on the podium in a Grand Prix race since joining the Italian team, has been holding meetings with senior executives to push for improvements and a voice in developing the team's car for 2026. Next year brings sweeping changes to the regulations. 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation — it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,' Vasseur said. "Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.
