Dakota Johnson and ‘Splitsville' Co-Stars on Playing ‘Unhappy' Characters, Open Relationships and a Possibly Fake Penis

'Splitsville' may be a rom-com, but Dakota Johnson's character Julie doesn't take part in much of the movie's comedy. 'I liked playing a really sort of unhappy woman,' Johnson told me Tuesday at the film's premiere at AMC the Grove in Los Angeles. More from Variety 'What We Do in the Shadows' Star Harvey Guillén to Receive Icon Award at Raizado Festival (EXCLUSIVE) 'The Pitt' Star Katherine LaNasa Shot Such a 'Disgusting' Scene for Season 2 She Told Producer 'He Needed to Give Me Some Diamonds' 'The Last of Us' Star Bella Ramsey Would Love to Play Spider-Man and Make a Heist Movie With Pedro Pascal 'Splitsville' follows two couples, made up of Julie and Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) and Ashley (Adria Arjona) and Carey (Kyle Marvin). Their lives begin to unravel when Ashley and Carey breakup and it's revealed that Julie and Paul have an open relationship. 'I just love this tone of film,' Johnson said. 'I love Mike and Kyle's comedy, the way they write, the way they work together. I think the subject matter [open relationships] is really interesting and controversial, and I think people are very curious about it.' The cast also includes Nicholas Braun, David Castañeda, Charlie Gillespie, Simon Webster, Stephen Adekolu, Tyrone Benskin and O-T Fagbenle. Marvin and Covino penned the script, and Johnson served as a producer with her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly. 'Succession' star Braun makes a cameo in 'Splitsville' as a mentalist performing at a children's birthday party. He said the movie had him thinking about open relationships. 'I can't do an open marriage or open relationship,' Braun said. 'I'm too sensitive for that, too jealous. I mean, it's brutal what happens to them in this movie and they're cool about it sort of — but also not. But I couldn't tolerate that. It would be torture. And it feels mean…It's complicated.' The Covino-directed ensemble received a six-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Ahead of its debut in Cannes' Premiere section, 'Splitsville' was acquired by Neon. In one much buzzed about scene, Paul and Carey get into a hilarious and what seems like never-ending fight which results in destroyed walls, furniture and more in Paul and Julie's gorgeous modern lakefront home. The first half of the brawl, on the first floor of the house, was done in one take seven times. 'It was an actual house and we destroyed it,' Marvin told me. 'Everyone was just patching up and trying to figure it [out]…and then we went right away and just beat each other up.' Covino added, 'We destroyed one house multiple times, so technically two or three houses. It was heavily choreographed and heavily rehearsed. After a long day of scouting and prepping, we would go to a bouldering gym where they had deep mats that we could fall on and just throw each other around.' Carey's penis is also seen a couple of times in the movie, most notably during an incident in the opening sequence. Marvin and Covino playfully declined to say if they used a prosthetic. 'No comment,' Marvin said, laughing. 'I think people are going to have to go look and see for themselves and make a choice.' Johnson's starring role in 'Splitsville' follows the recent success of 'Materialists,' her Celine Song rom-com with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans that has earned more $75 million worldwide at the box office. Johnson said, 'I think rom-coms are an incredible genre, so I'm glad that we are having some success.' 'Splitsville' is in select theaters Aug. 22 and everywhere Sept. 5. Together — the critically acclaimed horror thriller starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie— is reportedly coming soon to digital streaming. Together opened in theaters on July 30 after being acquired by indie studio Neon at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January. The officially summary for Together reads, 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Franco and Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. 'With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.' Rated R, Together is expected to be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Aug. 26, according to When to Stream. While When to Stream is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, the streaming tracker noted that Together's studio, Neon, has not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change. When Together arrives on PVOD, it will cost $24.99 to purchase. Since PVOD rentals typically run $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Together for $19.99 for a 48-hour period. The film will be available to purchase or rent on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. How Was 'Together' Received By Audiences And Critics? Together has earned $19.7 million domestically and $2 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $21.7 million to date. The official production and marketing budgets for Together has not been revealed, although Screen Daily reported that the film was acquired by Neon for $17 million at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Together earned a 91% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 211 reviews. In addition, Together earned a 76% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. The RT audience summary for the film reads, 'Surging with chemistry from the leads, Together fuses the bizarre with the perturbed, crafting its own sort of alchemy that feels wholly original.' The report revealed that medical intervention was attempted on Bell with defibrillator pads on his chest, a blood pressure cuff on his arm, an airway in his mouth and IV access. Additionally, the autopsy found Bell had stasis dermatitis and edema. According to the Mayo Clinic, stasis dermatitis "occurs when varicose veins or other circulatory conditions cause fluids to build up in the lower legs. The swelling produces pressure beneath the skin and slows the flow of blood and oxygen to the skin." Edema is "swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body's tissues." Toxicology tests showed no evidence of drugs or alcohol in Bell's system. What People Are Saying Bell's sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, confirmed his death in a June 15 Facebook post: "It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father. I've been waiting for the words and mindset to properly express the joy of a human, and Prince of a Man he was, but fate pushed my hand this morning by a pre-scheduled Father's Day newsletter honoring the men in our lives. "I met my little brother at the age of 18, on my high school graduation day, it was the most amazing surprise which I had been asking for for years, that our mom's made happen for us, and that gift has lasted a lifetime. "While I didn't grow up with a Father, David gave me all the unconditional love I could possibly ask for and I believe that all his family and friends received the same from him. He was always so proud of me, his nieces and his grandnephew, constantly engaged and always coming up with fun activities to get-together. We looked forward to going to Tatihi and the Lindsey reunion together to create more family connections. "David loved being an actor, doing voiceovers, spending time with Brutus traveling as an ambassador for Kona Brew. The film industry and entertainment was so exciting to him and I loved that he enjoyed the arts. He went to Punahou and Kalani while our dad spoke Hawaiian so his ability to deliver lines with English understanding, Indigenous knowledge and Pidgen to da him a diamond in the rough. "You can hear him over the PA system on arrival at Kona Airport where he loved working to create an awesome and safe customer experience. "He was and will remain a bright and shining star. He recently made it on to the big screen with an iconic Lilo & Stich momment. "He planned ahead and purchased the best seats in the house for us all to go together to opening night in Kapolei just two short weeks ago. That's one trait we didn't share, planning ahead:) We talked about and were so energized by the fans dressed in L&S gear head to toe, t-shirts, onezees, hats, mask, and the merch galore flying off the shelf as we stood in line for pop-corn. "I said we should get shave ice after the movie and reenact the sceen but then realized the store was already closed. To celebrate him and try to ease our grief we went to get shave ice and my grandson's emotion was on point. "To Aunty Gerry and the Kenui 'Ohana you raised an amazing human who became the most loving and supportive man in my life and I am eternally grateful. I share this grief with our older sister Kehau Bell, and my younger sister, Lara Leimana, who while not a Bell, loved and adored him as her own. "He enjoyed social media and I'll be resharing some of my favorite post he made, and some I am just seeing for the first time that I missed, because they are so funny and heartwarming. "Hug your loved ones last time together after returning home from the movie was just sitting on my living room couch talking story about life, having a seltzer and doing a little genealogy. Blessed by this and all the big and small moments, I will keep our memories alive. What Happens Next Walt Disney Studios paid tribute to Bell in a June 17 post on its official Instagram account, saying that the "kind, caring" actor "will forever be a member of the Disney and Lilo & Stitch family.
