Alex Jones says she feels like she has ‘grown up' with One Show viewers

Rhyl Journal19 hours ago
Jones, 48, who started out in children's TV, joined the BBC weekday chat show in August 2010 and hosted major events including royal weddings, Sport Relief and Eurovision.
She has also interviewed a number of Hollywood stars including Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore, Jackie Chan and Stephen Graham.
Marking a decade and a half on the programme, Jones said: 'I feel incredibly proud to have been on the iconic sofa for all these years. It certainly doesn't feel like 15 years, and it still feels fresh, as the show keeps evolving. I feel like we keep coming back better and better.
'I started as a young girl and I feel like I've grown up with our viewers. They have seen me through all my big life moments like getting engaged and married, to having children. Our viewers are like extended family by now.
'I'll be here as long as they'll have me. I have loved the last 15 years and love presenting the show and I think we're just getting stronger and stronger, from stories to guests and presenters.'
Reflecting on her career on the show, she recounted the impact the pandemic had, adding that viewers kept her 'sane'.
She said: 'I think that our connection with our audience is stronger than it's ever been. I think that relationship was cemented during the pandemic.
'It was a big turning point for the show. We became a lifeline for some of our viewers and they trusted us to reflect on the bizarre situation we as collectively found ourselves, but also balance that with stories that distract from the news.
'We were the light at the end of sometimes a very dark news bulletin. The viewers kept me sane as much as I did them.'
Jones has worked alongside broadcasters including Vernon Kay, Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne and Roman Kemp.
She added: 'What a lucky girl I am! I have Roman now, and Vernon and JB, as well as Clara and Lauren, and they couldn't be a lovelier bunch. I think the beauty about this line-up is that it lets the show drive forward, because each one of those brilliant broadcasters, they all bring something very different.'
'It's really nice to have this brilliant team of lovely, seasoned, brilliant broadcasters.'
She also co-hosted alongside former footballer Jermaine Jenas, before he was removed from the presenting team after alleged issues relating to workplace conduct.
Jones also joined the Strictly Come Dancing cast in 2011, making it into the semi-finals and finishing in fifth place with professional dancer James Jordan.

Stalker, 71, is banned from contacting Anna Friel or her daughter after turning up at her home and leaving unwanted gifts in terrifying three-year campaign

A stalker who had a 'fixation' with the actress Anna Friel has been ordered not to contact the star or her daughter as part of his bail conditions ahead of his sentencing next month. Phil Appleton, 71, admitted stalking the actress, who first shot to fame by being part of the first on-screen lesbian kiss on Channel 4 's Brookside, for almost three years. He had pursued a course of conduct 'which had a substantial adverse effect on her usual day-to-day activities', including sending unwanted emails, attending her home address and leaving gifts. A previous hearing heard that Friel was concerned she might see the defendant at a 'health club' they both attended. Reading Crown Court heard on Thursday that a psychiatrist had diagnosed Appleton with bipolar affective disorder and also believes he has a further diagnosis of 'erotomania' - a paranoid condition that is characterised by an individual's delusions of another person being infatuated with them. 'Mr Appleton will require close monitoring by mental health professionals', Judge Alan Blake said the psychiatrist had concluded, adding 'he has not confirmed that Mr Appleton's fixation with the complainant in this case will necessarily resolve.' Friel currently stars in BBC drama Unforgivable, a harrowing story about a family who deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of sexual abuse committed by a member of their own family. On the first day of what would have been Appleton's trial on Monday last week, the court heard Friel was unable to attend because of commitments she had in relation to the production. Jai Patel, prosecuting, also said Friel and her daughter had asked for permission to attend the trial and give evidence by video link because of 'genuine fear and distress'. Appleton, of Windsor in Berkshire, pleaded guilty to stalking involving serious alarm or distress earlier this week. He was due to be sentenced on Thursday, but judge Alan Blake adjourned the hearing until September 18 for a pre-sentence report to be carried out, pointing out that the psychiatrist was 'not entirely sure if his feeling towards the complainant will subside'. The defendant, who the court heard has been in custody for six months and has spent time in a mental health facility, was granted conditional bail. At today's hearing, James Bloomer KC, defending Appleton, said: 'We are dealing with a man aged 71 years who had a 25-year period of stability. 'He reaches 70 or thereabouts without a single interaction with the criminal justice system, despite his bipolar disorder.' 'Not to underestimate what has been pleaded guilty to here', Mr Bloomer added, 'this is a man whose level of need for the public to be protected from him is easy to overplay.' Mr Bloomer said the defendant had been on bail conditions, including not to contact Friel, in 2023 for a number of months without breaching them and would accept a lifelong restraining order. The lawyer said Appleton was 'absolutely determined' to do rehabilitative work and said he had learned from being in prison for the first time. 'He tells me that teaches him if nothing else does', Mr Bloomer said. He added he had felt Appleton had a 'lack of full understanding and acknowledgement of the impact of his behaviour on the victim.' 'It is more likely consistent treatment will help him to contain his feeling and reduce the risk of stalking', Judge Blake said. 'It is plain that on a number of occasions, Mr Appleton has indicated that he does not think he is unwell or needs to take his medication and has desisted in so doing.' Judge Blake agreed to bail Appleton, but declined to allow to him to stay at an address in France, instead ordering him to stay at his mother's address in Haverhill, Suffolk. Appleton was ordered not to contact Friel or her daughter Gracie Friel and must not enter the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which will be enforced by an electronic monitoring tag. The case was adjourned for Appleton, of Springfield Road, Windsor, to be sentenced for one count of stalking without fear, alarm or distress between January 1, 2022, to December 11 last year at the same court on September 18.

Ex-Strictly Come Dancing pro makes huge demand

Ex-Strictly Come Dancing pro makes huge demand Former Strictly dancer Ian Waite believes fans of the show would love an all-stars season of the show The seasoned dancer is known for his stint on BBC's Saturday night hit from 2004 to 2010. (Image: BBC) A former Strictly Come Dancing star has expressed interest in seeing an all-stars season of the show. Ian Waite, the seasoned dancer who is best known for his stint on BBC's Saturday night hit from 2004 to 2010, has suggested that Strictly Come Dancing could entice viewers with a special series featuring returning couples. In an exclusive chat with BANG Showbiz, Ian shared his thoughts. He explained: "It's definitely something that they could look into because there's so much nostalgia." You can read what former Strictly dancer, Vincent Simone thinks about the show here. The dancer was partnered with numerous celebrities including Zoe Ball, Denise Lewis and singer Mica Paris whilst on his six years of Strictly Come Dancing. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . He reminisced about past partnerships, saying: "Everybody loves the old pros from Strictly and the nostalgia that goes around it with certain couples, let's say Darren (Bennett) and Jill Halfpenny and me and Zoe Ball, Vincent (Simone) with Rachel Stevens." Ian believes that bringing back iconic duos would be a hit. "There's a lot of couples that could possibly come back and yeah, an all-stars would be a great thing to do I think." Despite recent controversies surrounding the show, such as the grievances expressed by Sherlock star Amanda Abbington regarding her professional partner Giovanni Pernice during the 2023 season, Ian remains optimistic about the future. He trusts that new safeguarding measures will mitigate similar issues. Reflecting on his own experiences, he commented, "This is an isolated case I think. In general the pros are really professional and really hard-working. In my experience, we've all worked really hard, we've all done competitions, we're all at the top of our game and that's why we're on Strictly. "Hopefully the safeguarding is in place now so that that won't happen again and I think that's the best for everybody really because it protects not only the celebrities but it protects the pros - because who's to say we won't be abused." Ian is participating in The Return of the Legends tour alongside his former Strictly colleagues Brendan Cole, James Jordan, Pasha Kovalev and Vincent Simone. He has been pleasantly surprised by the strong camaraderie they've developed despite their competitive spirits. He expressed: "That's what's been so great, we've got this really great bromance backstage. "I wasn't really sure whether we'd all be able to bond because we've all done our own shows and been very successful performing in our shows. We weren't sure whether we'd be able to get on but actually it's like a proper bromance backstage and we all love each other. We all appreciate each other. ". The Return of the Legends tour will be heading to Llandudno's Venue Cymru and Cardiff's New Theatre later this year.
