Bitcoin Developer Proposes Hard Fork to Protect BTC From Quantum Computing Threats

Bitcoin could be headed for its most sweeping cryptographic overhaul yet if a new proposal gains traction.
A draft Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) titled Quantum-Resistant Address Migration Protocol (QRAMP) has been introduced by developer Agustin Cruz. It outlines a plan to enforce a network-wide migration of BTC from legacy wallets to ones secured by post-quantum cryptography.
Quantum computing involves moving away from a process reliant on binary code, ones and zeros, and exponentially increasing computing power by employing Quantum bits (qubits) that exist in multiple states simultaneously. Such a jump in power is expected to threaten modern computing encryption built by classic machines.
The proposal suggests that after a predetermined block height, nodes running the updated software would reject any transaction trying to spend coins from an address using ECDSA cryptography, which could theoretically make it vulnerable to quantum attacks.
Bitcoin currently relies on algorithms, including SHA-256 for mining and the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for signatures. Per Cruz, legacy addresses that haven't yet transacted are protected by additional layers, while those that have exposed their public keys—necessary to conduct transactions—may now be vulnerable 'if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge.'
The move would require a hard fork, which is likely going to be a tall ask from the community. A hard fork refers to a change to a blockchain that renders an older version incompatible.
"I admire the effort but this will still leave everyone who doesn't migrate's coins vunerable, including Satoshi's coins," said one Reddit user about the new proposal.
"Bitcoin could implement a post quantum security for all coins but that would need a hard fork, which due to bitcoin's history and the mantra repeated by maxis that would create a new coin and would not be bitcoin anymore."

The proposed solution sets a migration deadline to lock those funds unless they're moved to a more secure wallet. This proposal isn't a response to any imminent breakthrough in quantum computing. Instead, it's a preventive measure, yet it comes a little over a month after Microsoft unveiled Majorana 1, a quantum processing unit designed to scale to a million qubits per chip.
During a migration window, users would still be able to move funds freely. The BIP calls for wallet developers, block explorers and 'other infrastructure' to build tools and warnings to help users comply.
After the deadline, non-upgraded nodes could fork from the network if they continue accepting legacy transactions.
This is not the first time someone has suggested a mechanism to defend Bitcoin from quantum computing threats. Most recently, BTQ, a startup working to build blockchain technology that can withstand attacks from quantum computers, has proposed an alternative to the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm involving quantum technology.
In its research paper, BTQ proposed a method called Coarse-Grained Boson Sampling (CGBS). This process uses light particles (bosons) to generate unique patterns—samples—that reflect the blockchain's current state instead of hash-based mathematical puzzles.
However, this proposal would also require a hard fork involving miners and nodes replacing their existing ASIC-based hardware with quantum-ready infrastructure.

DLA Piper rolls out Microsoft Copilot firmwide Assess: DLA Piper has defended Microsoft in a defamation suit over AI-generated content and helped OpenAI put forward its views to Congress on how AI should be regulated. It's leaning into the tech internally, too. Danny Tobey, chair of DLA Piper's AI and data analytics practice, said the firm has an internal group of lawyers and technologists who test tools and develop metrics for quality and accuracy. The team runs A/B tests on real cases, comparing results from traditional legal teams against AI-assisted ones to evaluate performance across speed, accuracy, and cost. Apply: Microsoft has highlighted DLA Piper as the first major law firm to adopt Copilot firmwide, after starting with several hundred licenses in late 2023. Lawyers use Copilot within their existing Microsoft 365 apps, Tobey said. Think drafting documents, poring over spreadsheets, and creating PowerPoint slides. For more advanced legal research and analysis, he said, attorneys turn to legal-specific tools like Harvey, CoCounsel, and LexisNexis Protégé. DLA Piper has also developed custom language models to help clients spot compliance risks early, including under laws like the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Anti-Kickback Statute. "We've found a number of issues before they metastasized into outright violations," Tobey said, "and that allowed the company to step in and do some education and compliance refreshing before there was a problem." Align: Tobey said the firm provides detailed training for lawyers on how to use its tools. "We train on a per-tool basis because they all have strengths and weaknesses," Tobey said. "If you were a doctor, you would not adopt a new tool without being trained in its limitations." Gibson Dunn pilots ChatGPT Enterprise with its lawyers and staff Assess: Before adopting any tool, Gibson Dunn runs a three-step review process, said Meredith Williams-Range, the firm's chief legal operations officer. Tools must first pass an internal audit covering security, privacy, and risk. Next, they undergo proof-of-concept testing with a small group. Finally, tools must demonstrate real value to lawyers through hands-on use, a process that can take days or, as with a Harvey pilot, stretch over several months. Apply: ChatGPT Enterprise is one tool making its way through Gibson Dunn's internal processes. In June, the firm launched a pilot with more than 500 participants — a mix of lawyers and staff — to put the product through its paces. Williams-Range said she emailed practice group leaders and managing partners around the world, asking them to submit lawyers willing to test the tool. Three days later, 450 people had signed up — more than twice what she expected. Gibson Dunn says it's also evaluating using rival AI models Google Gemini and Claude Enterprise. The firm works with a range of vendors, including Harvey, Thomson Reuters, and Microsoft. Some tools, like Harvey and CoCounsel, are used to support legal work, while Copilot helps with administrative tasks. For more specific use cases, the firm collaborates with developers to build custom workflows tailored to its practices and data, Williams-Range said. Align: The firm's AI policy is reviewed quarterly to stay current with changing regulations, she said. It also includes a procurement playbook with specific terms around security and how it shares learnings about the tools. Gibson Dunn also has a strategic advisory board made up of over 30 partners across offices globally. This brain trust meets monthly to guide policy decisions, debate use cases, and determine whether tools like ChatGPT Enterprise should be limited, expanded, or customized. "Just because we can doesn't mean we should," Williams-Range said, referring to the principle that guides the board's work. Sidley Austin hones prompt engineering skills during associate orientation Assess: Over her 29 years with the firm, corporate lawyer Sharon Flanagan has watched Sidley embrace new tech, but with guardrails in place. The firm formed an AI council with members from its management committee, executive committee, and strategy team to set policies and identify use cases. Sidley typically starts with small-scale rollouts to pilot new tools before expanding. Apply: Sidley has explored a range of AI tools, says Jane Rheem, Sidley's chief data and AI officer — from legal-specific platforms, to broader foundation models, to point solutions that help with timekeeping or narrative writing. The firm declined to identify the AI tools it's testing, saying it doesn't want to endorse products that may not be part of its long-term strategy. Flanagan says uptake has been organic among litigators and corporate and regulatory attorneys. Align: Implementation is only the beginning, Rheem says. The firm tracks usage after deployment, gathering data and feedback from "superusers" — early adopters who experiment broadly and flag where tools are working (or not). Sidley is also focused on making sure its youngest lawyers are fluent in the tools. This year, nearly 300 incoming associates participated in a generative AI hackathon as part of their orientation. Ropes & Gray uses AI tools like Harvey and Hebbia to squeeze more hours out of the day Assess: When Ropes & Gray finds an AI service it likes, Ed Black and the IT and practice technology teams put on their investment banker hats. "We phone them up every few weeks and say, 'Tell us about your updates,'" said Black, the firm's technology strategy leader. Before a tool can move to testing, it must pass a security and risk audit; only "qualified vendors" make it to the next phase. From there, testing is twofold. First, a technical evaluation by the firm's technology team aims to ensure the product works as promised. Then a second round with lawyers examines usability and actual value in practice. Apply: Ropes & Gray rolled out Harvey firmwide in June, after a year of use with a smaller test group, Black said. The firm has also collaborated with Harvey on a "workflow builder" that lets users design and deploy custom agents — software that can carry out tasks on its own. Hebbia, an AI agent company focused on professional services, has proven particularly useful to lawyers like Melissa Bender, a partner in the asset management group and cohead of the private funds practice. When institutional investors need fund documents reviewed, Bender uses Hebbia to extract key terms and speed up summaries. She estimates the process now takes two to three hours, less than what would typically be a 10-hour matter. Align: Black stresses responsible use of the tools, starting with the principle that the results of using these tools are first drafts, not the final product. The private funds practice requires tool-specific training for junior and mid-level associates, Bender says, while more senior lawyers are "strongly encouraged" to take the training. The goal is to ensure lawyers know how to use the tools appropriately and empower them to speak with clients about the firm's technology capabilities. "We are in the business of selling legal services," Bender said. "I want our associates to understand the differentiated nature of our offering." Morgan Lewis requires staff to get credentialed before they can use the tools Assess: At Morgan Lewis, the first step in adopting AI isn't picking the tool. It's diagnosing the problem, said attorney Timothy Levin, who leads the firm's investment management practice. Understanding how legal work can be improved with AI is important to ensure tools are applied where they can have a real impact, rather than just throwing tech at a problem, Levin said. Once a tool passes security and risk checks, it's piloted by an attorney and C-suite advisory group spanning 15 practice areas and firm operations — a cross-section designed to vet the tool's value across the firm's legal work. Apply: Morgan Lewis has been inundated with startup pitches, says Colleen Nihill, its chief AI and knowledge officer, as the legal tech gold rush draws a wave of new founders. To cut through the noise, Morgan Lewis favors larger enterprise partners that align with its technical standards. For example, Thomson Reuters is a strategic partner. The firm's advisory group meets regularly with Thomson Reuters to review existing tools, preview the product road map, and beta test unreleased features. They also collaborate to co-develop tools tailored to Morgan Lewis's needs. One use case at Morgan Lewis involves reviewing fund documents for institutional investors, where CoCounsel Core helps attorneys summarize key terms and flag client-specific dealbreakers. Align: Nihill said the firm requires its staff to get credentialed for tools before they can use them. Partners and firm leadership were the first to get CoCounsel Core-certified, a process that included Coursera-based coursework, hands-on exercises, and a final assessment. Once certified, users receive a digital badge displayed on their internal profiles. Nihill says this signals to associates that these tools aren't just approved; they're a professional priority for the firm.

Also, several crypto venture capital firms such as FalconX, Pantera, Borderless, RK Capital, and Relayer Capital participated in the private placement. The deal is expected to close around July 21, 2025, subject to customary closing conditions. Upon completion, Volcon plans to deploy at least 95% of the net proceeds to acquire Bitcoin. New Strategy Calls for New Management Alongside the private placement, VLCN has entered into a Strategic Digital Assets Services Agreement with Gemini Nustar LLC to help Volcon manage and execute its digital asset strategy efficiently. Further, Volcon has named Ryan Lane, co-founder of Empery Asset Management, as co-CEO and chairman of the board. Also, John Kim will continue in his role as co-CEO, focusing on the company's core electric off-road powersports business. This move makes Volcon a part of the growing number of companies adding digital assets to their balance sheets. Michael Saylor turned his software company, formerly MicroStrategy, into the world's largest Bitcoin treasury company over the last few years. Saylor says Bitcoin is headed for an eye-popping $273 trillion valuation by 2045, but that prediction will run into some serious challenges. 10 stocks we like better than Bitcoin › Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) was founded in 1994 to sell books using the internet, and it quickly became an e-commerce pioneer which now offers more than 600 million different products. Its expansion into other businesses like cloud computing, streaming, and digital advertising helped catapult the company's valuation to an eye-popping $2.4 trillion. But last Monday (July 14), Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) briefly surpassed $2.4 trillion in market capitalization when the value of a single coin rocketed past $123,000. The cryptocurrency was introduced in 2009, so it reached the milestone even faster than Amazon, which is remarkable for an asset that doesn't produce any revenue or earnings. Furthermore, Bitcoin is now worth more than Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and even Tesla. Bitcoin might still have room to run. Strategy's (NASDAQ: MSTR) Michael Saylor predicts that the price of a single coin could top $13 million by 2045, translating to a whopping 10,500% upside from Monday's peak. How realistic is that target? Read on to find out. Saylor says Bitcoin will transform the global financial system So far, Bitcoin hasn't proven to be very useful as a currency because of its high volatility relative to traditional currencies like the U.S. dollar. But a growing number of investors consider it to be a good store of value for the following reasons: Bitcoin has a capped supply of 21 million coins, so it's a scarce asset, similar to gold. It's fully decentralized, so it isn't controlled by any person, company, or government. It's built on a secure, and publicly verifiable system of record called the blockchain. Saylor, who founded the software-turned-Bitcoin treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy, believes that "tokenizing" every physical asset in the world onto the blockchain would create transparency and also solve some of the inefficiencies in the current financial system. For instance, buying real estate comes with high legal fees because most properties have an opaque history that requires tedious research to uncover. But if we placed every real estate transaction on the blockchain, records would suddenly become transparent and verifiable by any prospective buyer. Saylor says he thinks Bitcoin would be the perfect reserve asset for the tokenization process because of its decentralized nature. This means Bitcoin would be the currency everybody uses to buy, sell, or transfer tokenized assets. Therefore, anyone who wants to participate in this new financial system will have to use the cryptocurrency at some point, creating an organic source of demand that could drive its price higher. Bringing Saylor's vision to life won't be easy because it will require global cooperation. But President Donald Trump has a very pro-crypto agenda, so the world might follow if the U.S. government were to lead the way by creating a legal framework with rules and standards. $13 million per Bitcoin implies a sky-high (and potentially unrealistic) valuation According to Saylor, there are about $500 trillion in global assets eligible for tokenization. He believes they can be shifted onto the blockchain by 2045, which would create enough demand to send the price of a single Bitcoin soaring to $13 million. That would be a whopping 10,500% increase from Monday's peak of about $123,000. However, $13 million per Bitcoin would translate to a fully diluted market capitalization of $273 trillion (based on its total supply of 21 million coins). That means the cryptocurrency would be worth a whopping nine times more than the output of the entire U.S. economy, which was $29.7 trillion last year. It would also be 66 times more valuable than Nvidia, which is currently the world's largest company thanks to its market cap of $4.2 trillion. As a result, I think Saylor's target is unrealistic. Even if his vision became reality and all of the world's assets were tokenized onto the blockchain, Bitcoin would only soar in value if every person held on to their coins after selling an asset. As I alluded to earlier, Bitcoin isn't a great everyday currency. Only 6,600 merchants worldwide accept it as payment for goods and services (according to crypto directory Cryptwerk), so people would have to convert their coins back to fiat currency to carry on with their lives. Therefore, the pool of people who are purchasing Bitcoin to acquire an asset would be met with an almost equal number of sellers, leading to a potentially neutral -- not increasing -- value. Could Bitcoin eventually become a widely adopted currency? In my opinion, Bitcoin will never be a true global currency. Every economy operates at a different speed, which is why some countries have stronger fiat currencies than others. Australia and Vietnam have much weaker currencies than economic powerhouses like the U.S., which helps them compete on the global stage by making their exports more attractive to larger trading partners. If every country adopted Bitcoin, the smallest economies would be thrust onto a level playing field with the likes of the U.S., which would damage their exports and dent their citizens' quality of life. This is one reason several countries might be inclined to reject Saylor's plan for tokenization on a global scale. But that doesn't mean Bitcoin is a bad investment right now. The total value of all above-ground gold reserves currently stands at $22.4 trillion, so that could be a realistic target for Bitcoin's market cap if a growing number of investors continue to view it as a legitimate store of value. It would result in a price-per-Bitcoin of $1,066,000, implying a potential upside of about 770% from Monday's peak. There's no guarantee that this scenario will play out, but I think it has a better shot at becoming reality than Saylor's forecast. After all, it's important to remember that Strategy owns 601,550 Bitcoin worth about $71 billion, so Saylor has a very big incentive to issue bullish predictions.
